Back of the book:

It’s been fifteen years since famed pianist Liesl Bower saw her beloved Harvard mentor gunned down, since the CIA disclosed his double life as a Russian spy. She was interrogated and released, with no incriminating evidence against her. But now, something has happened to set Russian and CIA agents on her heels. New intelligence suggests that Liesl possesses a coded message critical to a resurgence of Soviet power.

As global tensions mount, the Russians are in a frenzy to find the code before the Americans. Standing in their way, though, is the young pianist from the tidal creeks and secret-shrouded lanes of Charleston, South Carolina. As Liesl outruns the tip of the Russian Spear, she must reckon with the wounds of her past, the love of a man she never thought could be hers, and the prevailing power of God.

In the final hour, on a world stage, Liesl must deliver a message of her own.

My thoughts:

When I began reviewing books I promised myself that I would always be polite but honest in my opinions. So here goes… When I received The Sound of Red Returning I began to dread reading it. The cover did not appeal to me, the title did not appeal to me and the description on the back cover did not appeal to me. In fact I put off reading it until the last possible moment.

I crawled in bed intending to just read a chapter and then go to sleep. The prologue consists of five paragraphs. Those five paragraphs sucked me in so completely that I was still reading several hours later. The story is very layered and the deeper you get into it the better it is. The characters were complex and left you wanting to know more about them.  The setting is mainly in Charleston, South Carolina, my very favorite place in the whole world. There is even a part where the author is describing the actions of a character and you are led to believe through her clues that it is one person, but in the end it is someone completely different. Brilliant!

Well you know the old adage…never judge a book by its cover…this one fits that saying completely. I am really looking forward to reading the next two books in the trilogy, regardless of what they look like! Kregel Publishers, you have picked a winning series again. I am thrilled that I can still count on you to publish books with such depth.

  1. Thank you for sticking with me past the front cover. But I'm sorry you lost sleep over it. Wait a minute. No I'm not. I'm glad you couldn't put it down. I'm eager for your review of the next in the trilogy.

    Thanks again.
