Back of the book:

Charlotte owns a chic Birmingham bridal boutique. Dressing brides for their big day is her gift—and her passion. But with her own wedding day approaching, why can’t she find the perfect dress—or feel certain she should marry Tim?

Then Charlotte purchases a vintage dress in a battered trunk at an estate sale. It looks brand-new, shimmering with pearls and satin, hand-stitched and timeless in its design. But where did it come from? Who wore it? Who welded the lock shut and tucked the dog tags in that little sachet? Who left it in the basement for a ten-year-old girl? And what about the mysterious man in the purple vest who insists the dress had been “redeemed”?

Charlotte’s search for the gown’s history—and its new bride—begins as a distraction from her sputtering love life. But it takes on a life of its own as she comes to know the women who have worn the dress. Emily from 1912. Mary Grace from 1939. Hillary from 1968. Each with her own story of promise, pain, and destiny. And each with something unique to share. For woven within the threads of the beautiful hundred-year-old gown is the truth about Charlotte’s heritage, the power of courage and faith, and the beauty of finding true love.

My thoughts:

When I was growing up my grandfather liked to frequent auctions. Nothing was more exciting than when he would come home with a locked suitcase or a sealed container. What could possibly be inside? That is where The Wedding Dress begins. Charlotte has unwittingly stumbled into an auction and finds herself bidding on and winning an old locked truck.

The story jumps back and forth between modern day Charlotte’s life and Emily Canton’s life in 1912. I love how the author wove the tale between the two with all the subtle similarities in the women’s lives. The stories of Mary Grace and Hillary come toward then end and help to round out the story into a complete account of the lives of these four fascinating women. There is even a wonderful mystery of exactly who is that man dressed in purple.

As with other pieces of Ms. Hauck’s work there is a deeper meaning in this tale. It is a great surface read, but the underlying story just puts it over the top. The discussion questions in the back of the book are a great addition as well. In them we get a glimpse of what the author intended for the reader to take away from the story.  I highly recommend this amazing story of redemption.

  3. This book can really inspire my sister who is going to be married next month. It seems like she has been obsessed with all the modest wedding dresses that she saw when she's choosing the one she'll use. I'll buy her this.

  4. I would love to read this book too. I am inspired by movies about weddings and I am already excited for the day we would wear our wedding bands. This could be a good inspiration.
