Wish You Were Here

Fiction/Christian/Romance

Back of the book:

Allison Denman is supposed to get married in five days, but everything is all wrong. The huge wedding. The frothy dress. And the groom.

Still, kissing the groom’s brother, Daniel, in an unguarded moment is decidedly not the right thing to do. How could she have made such a mistake? It seems Allison’s life is nothing but mistakes at this point. Daniel’s adventures—chronicled through a collection of postcards—have always appealed to Allison’s well-hidden desire for something more. But how can betraying her fiancé’s trust lead to a true happily ever after?

Can Allison find her way out of this mess? Recognizing she doesn’t have all the answers won’t be easy because she’s used to being in control. To find her way again, she will have to believe that God has a plan for her—one outside her carefully defined comfort zone—and find the strength to let Him lead.

My thoughts:

Wish You Were Here is Beth Vogt’s debut novel. It is definitely a book that you should not judge by its cover. Nor should you judge it by the back cover or the first few chapters. From those aspects I perceived that this was going to be a nice little romance.

In the beginning of the book there are several references to the movie Runaway Bride starring Julia Roberts. Does she leave her groom standing at the alter? Yes, but that is just the icebreaker in this complex story. There are some very serious subjects that are covered in this work. Beth delves into feelings of abandonment, cutting oneself to relieve anxiety, not feeling worthy and other subjects that are not usually included in a light romance.

I enjoyed the very real struggles that the characters went through. Life can be very messy and misunderstandings can cloud our perceptions. In this story we get to come alongside and see the struggles from both sides. For instance it is easy to not like Seth, but the author takes us deeper and helps us to see and understand that actions are many times a result of experiences.

If you are looking for a great read for a lazy spring afternoon take a chance and pick up Wish You Were Here. After reading it you will be eagerly anticipating Beth’s next novel.
