Book Review ~ House of Mercy by Erin Healy @erinhealybooks

Erin Healy
Fiction / Christian / Suspense

Back of the book:

When Beth’s world falls apart, can she ever be whole again?

Beth as a gift of healing—which is why she wants to become a vet and help her family run their fifth-generation cattle ranch. Her father’s dream of helping men in trouble and giving them a second chance is her dream too. But it only takes one foolish decision to destroy it all.

Beth scrambles to redeem her mistake, pleading with God for help, even as a mystery complicates her life. The repercusions grow more unbearable—a lawsuit, a death, a divided family, and the looming loss of everything she cares about. Beth’s only hope is to find the grandfather she never knew and beg for his help. Confused, grieving , and determined to make amends, she embarks on a horseback journey across the mountains guided by a wild, unpredictable wolf who may or may not be real.

Set in the stunningly rugged terrain of Southern Colorado, House of Mercy follows Beth through the valley of the shadow of death into the unfathomable miracles of mercy.

About the author:

Erin Healy is an award-winning editor and bestselling co-author of  the supernatural suspense novels Kiss (Thomas Nelson | 2009) and Burn (Thomas Nelson | January 2010) with Ted Dekker. Her solo debut, Never Let You Go (Thomas Nelson | May 2010), ushered in a new brand of fiction, building on her work with Dekker, that melds supernatural suspense with female-friendly relational drama.

Healy is the owner of WordWright Editorial Services and specializes in fiction book development. She has worked with popular authors such as Frank Peretti, James Scott Bell, Melody Carlson, Colleen Coble, L. B. Graham, Brandilyn Collins, Rene Gutteridge, Michelle
McKinney Hammond, Robin Lee Hatcher, Denise Hildreth, Denise Hunter, Jane Kirkpatrick, Gilbert Morris, Lisa Samson, Randy Singer and Robert Whitlow.

Healy earned her bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in communication studies from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., and began her career as an editor for Christian Parenting Today during the mid-1990s. After advancing from assistant editor, to associate editor, to editor while working for the magazine, she moved on to serve as a book editor for WaterBrook Press. She founded WordWright Editorial Services in 2002.

Healy began working for Dekker the same year, editing 12 of his well-known, heart-pounding stories, before collaborating with him as a co-author on Kiss and Burn. Her solo debut, Never Let You Go, is a supernatural suspense tale about a single mother’s struggle to protect her daughter as threatening elements from her past unexpectedly re-emerge.

Healy currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colo., with her husband, Tim, and two children. She is a member of International Thriller Writers and the American Christian Fiction Writers.

My thoughts:

Have you ever done something on impulse that wound up having repercussions that extend far beyond what you could have ever imagined? Have you ever struggled with how to undo what has already been done?

That is exactly the spot we find our lead character in when we meet her. She makes a decision against her better judgment that begins a downward spiral not only for herself but for those that she loves the most.

At one time if you would have asked me if I liked speculative fiction I would have said no…but then along came Erin Healy. This woman has such talent. She takes the seemingly implausible and turns it into something completely believable. I continually ask myself how she comes up with this stuff while I’m reading her work.

In House of Mercy, Erin gives us a peak at where the idea for this book came from. In the back of the book under the author’s note section she shares about an extremely difficult time in her life. During a conversation with God, she felt like He was asking her, “Do you believe I’m good even when I don’t give you what you think you need?” And that is where the storyline was born.

Throughout the story Beth calls out for God to have mercy. God continually tells her that He will show her mercy. But He also reminds her that His mercy doesn’t exist because of who Beth is. It exists because of Who God is.

Towards the end of the book the message of mercy was so powerful that I literally had to put the book down and spend a moment of private praise and worship. You can’t help but examine the mercy that has been shown to you in your life.

Five stars, two thumbs up, and all of that! Go get this book…you will not regret it!

Hillsong LIVE Cornerstone ~ CD Review & Tour Dates @hillsonglive

About Hillsong LIVE:

Hillsong LIVE is the expression of worship from Hillsong Church - a local church with global influence. This local church creative team has a commitment to continually resource the Body of Christ with fresh songs of worship and a deep passion to see people connect with the Living God in a real and personal way.

“Cornerstone”, the latest album offering from Hillsong LIVE, was recorded in Sydney, Australia and is a reflection of that firm commitment. This album offers fresh, new songs to congregations worldwide, with a simple desire to place emphasis on Jesus and a prayer that people everywhere - regardless of circumstance - will be encouraged to find hope in Christ, the Cornerstone.

Filled with songs such as the title track “Cornerstone”; new anthem “Beneath The Waters” (I Will Rise); and upbeat praise, “Running”, our prayer is that this album will be a blessing to the global Body of Christ, filling churches and homes with the worship of an ever-faithful God.

My Thoughts:

I have enjoyed Hillsong LIVE for a while now and was thrilled to get their new CD Cornerstone. I really enjoy their music and love having praise songs to sing at home. Cornerstone is fresh and upbeat.

When the day has been stressful it’s nice to stop and put the CD in and just focus on worshiping God. I love that Cornerstone bring home worship.  My favorite song is “Beneath The Waters”

The Cornerstone CD is based off the scripture Ephesians  2:20"Together, we are His house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus Himself" (NLT).

Overall I loved the CD. It reminded me that we do serve an ever-faithful God who is worthy of our praise. No matter where you are Hillsong LIVE Cornerstone offers you the chance to worship God. The CD is perfect for our whole family. If you want fresh and upbeat worship songs the Cornerstone will not disappoint!

Book Review ~ Mother of Pearl: Luminous Lessons and Iridescent Faith Compiled by Margaret McSweeney

Mother of Pearl: Luminous Lessons and Iridescent Faith
Compiled by Margaret McSweeney
Non Fiction

Back of the book:

Like oysters, women often encounter unexpected grit during their everyday lives. In response, God’s love and grace covers this grit and transforms the pain into a precious pearl that leaves a layered, luminous lining within a shell: Mother of Pearl. This brilliant luster is strong, lasting, and purposeful—just like the love, lessons, and legacies left by the special women in our lives.

Mother of Pearl celebrates the collective iridescence of motherhood. Margaret McSweeney presents a collection of heartfelt vignettes from authors who communicate the importance of the unique relationships between mothers and their children, between granddaughters and grandmothers and between children and the mother-figures in their lives.

These stories tell of the power of faith, prayer, and values, exploring coming of age, the joy of becoming a mother, the importance of motherhood, the ways to heal from a bad relationship with a mother and weathering the death of a special loved one. Poignant and thought-provoking, the stories serve to inspire, encourage, instill hope, and strengthen faith.

The proceeds from the sale of Mother of Pearl will be donated to organizations helping struggling women and children. The charities include Wings (Women in Need Growing Stronger) to help fund the Safe House in the Chicago suburbs and to Hands of Hope to help build wells for schoolchildren in Zambia.

About Margaret McSweeney:

Margaret is a wife and mother, serves on the Leadership Advisory Board for Wings (Women in Need Growing Stronger). She is the author of A Mother’s Heart Knows and Aftermath:Finding Grace Through Grief and coauthor of Go Back and Be Happy, she also compiled the collection of essays Pearl Girls.

Visit Margaret online at margaretmcsweeney.com

My thoughts:

Mother of Pearl is a book for women, written by a group of ladies from various backgrounds and experiences. It is a compilation of short essays about some of the authors’ most personal experiences as women. Some of my favorite authors like Lis Wiehl, Robin Jones Gunn, Tricia Goyer and Suzanne Woods Fisher have made very touching contributions.

Each article is short enough to be read in a couple of minutes. In fact I carried it around in my purse for a couple of days and would pull it out when I had a lull and quickly read a piece. One of the little touches that I like about the book was the brief biographies that were included for each contributor. Some of the authors were unfamiliar to me and it was nice to read about who they were.

This would be a wonderful gift for any female. Just tuck it into a little gift basket and pass it on to that new momma or that sweet older woman that you admire. They will definitely love it. My copy is going on the night stand in my guest room. I can’t wait to discuss it with my next visitor!

Chuck E. Cheese's Rockin New Look ~ Review & Giveaway @chuckecheese

Over the last 35 years we’ve changed and grown up alongside the families and the children who are our guests, and as we start to entertain the next generation of families we wanted Chuck E. to be relatable to both today’s children and their parents who grew up enjoying fun and games with us.

Chuck E.’s new style centers around his love for music to reflect that music unites families just like the cool, fun experience they share together in our stores.

Our thoughts:

Hubby and I both grew up going to Chuck E. Cheese on special occasions and family nights. We both have great memories from it. We love to take our boys there to create new memories with them.

I was thrilled to hear that Chuck E. Cheese has a new look and new music. It was time for some new music and I have to say I really like it. Its high energy which makes it fun to listen to while playing all the games!

Little M has been once before and he said he really liked all the rides and games. I also thought it was cool that they had rides for Little H too. There were a couple of rides where a couple of kids could ride making it  very budget friendly. I also love that I can get free refills because it takes some caffeine to keep up with the kiddos!

I am not sure all Chuck E. Cheeses do this but at ours they round up the tickets. This is really nice since Little M isn’t that great at winning a lot of tickets. He left happy with a sucker the size of his face.

Overall I am really impressed with the service and quality we get a Chuck E. Cheese. They also keep it clean and have hand sanitizer available! The staff even offered to refill our drinks and get us a to go box. I love the new Chuck E. Cheese Rockin look and music. Little M loved every second and is always thrilled to go back!

Giveaway:

Two readers will win a gift card to Chuck E. Cheese which includes a Large Pizza, 4 drinks, and 80 tokens. Open to US only 18+. Giveaway will end on 09/10/2012 at 12:01 am EST. Fill out the Rafflecopter form to be entered!

Book Review ~ Waiting for a View by Debby Mayne @DebbyMayne

Waiting for a View
Debby Mayne
Bloomfield Series, Book 1
Fiction

About the book:

Pushing 40, Bloomfield’s garden club vice president Sherry Butler has never moved out of her family home, still works at the same card shop where she landed a job after high school, and so resists change that she never accepted years of marriage proposals from Theo, the only man she ever loved.

Once he moves on, Sherry is pursued by Brad Henderson, an old friend who always seems to be there when she needs a helping hand. His kindness only annoys Sherry until one day she is shocked into self-reflection when a little girl points to her and asks her mother if she’s “the sad woman who will wind up being an old maid.”

With a friend’s encouragement, Sherry plans a turnaround, putting her house on the market and her name on the waiting list for a nice apartment with a view of the lake. She also agrees to go out with Brad, another bold step outside her comfort zone.

Letting go of the past is about as simple as an elephant picking up a pea, but for the first time in her life Sherry will leap into the exhilarating world of the great unknown, a place where faith is crucial and true love is waiting.

About the series:

The first Bloomfield novel, Waiting for a View by Debby Mayne, is available now as an eBook exclusive. The series’ first print release, Take the Trophy and Run by Gail Sattler, hits stores November 1, 2012. Future titles include Sattler’s When Pigs and Parrots Fly (eBook, February 2013), Last Chance for Justice by Kathi Macias (print, May 2013), and Best Laid Plans by Martha Rogers (eBook, July 2013).

The town of Bloomfield is a charming place with rolling hills on one side and a serene lake on the other. Main Street is lined with mom-and-pop businesses, a downtown theater with extra buttered popcorn, and a center court fountain that folks use to cool off during the blistering hot summer. Its population of Christ-loving but quirky folks will do anything they can for their neighbors.

Everyone is welcome in Bloomfield! Like Facebook.com/BloomfieldClub, follow @BloomfieldClub on Twitter, and check out Pinterest.com/BloomfieldClub. Fans can even become a “founding member” of Bloomfield and receive special incentives, such as having their name listed in an upcoming book and helping select forthcoming character names

About the author:
Twitter: @DebbyMayne

My thoughts:

Don’t you love the beginning of a new series? I sure do, especially when it looks like it is going to be a great one! The lineup of authors on this one practically makes it a hit before they are released.

In Waiting for a View we are introduced to Bloomfield, one of the top tiny towns in the nation. Of course there are several locals that are determined to make it one of the top small towns in the nation; after all wouldn’t more people want to visit a small town as opposed to a tiny town. If they could just get the population over that pesky 10,000 mark and keep it there.

One of the first citizens we meet is Sherry Butler. She is the manager of the local card store and vice president of the garden club. Sherry grew up in Bloomfield and never left, in fact she still lives in her childhood home. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother was his enabler. The problem with a small town is that everyone knew this.

Poor Sherry! Not only was she the town drunk’s daughter, but when she finally got up the nerve to seriously date someone he ultimately dumped her. Now Sherry just sticks to what is safe and secure, never venturing out of her comfort zone.

But like all good stories there’s someone to pull her out of that and make her start living life to the fullest. Naomi is an 80 year old feisty woman that has loved and cared for Sherry her entire life. Naomi made sure that Sherry went to church and had all the emotional support that her parents weren’t able to give. With some not so gentle nudges and urges Naomi continues to push Sherry out of that comfort zone, preferably right into the arms of Brad Henderson.

The problem with Brad is that he is the best friend of the guy that dumped her. Sherry just isn’t sure that she can trust him. Brad on the other hand is frustrated with Sherry for not trusting him. All the makings of great romantic tension!

I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and meet the delightful people that make up the beautiful town of Bloomfield. I hope you’ll take this fictional journey with me!

Book Review ~ Over The Edge by Mary Connealy @MaryConnealy

Mary Connealy
The Kincaid Brides, Book 3
Historical Fiction

Back of the book:

Seth Kincaid remembers almost everything . . . except getting married!

Seth Kincaid survived a fire in a cave, but he hasn’t been the same since. Then he fought in the Civil War and returned to Colorado crazier than ever.

Somewhere along the line, it appears Seth got married. Oh, he has a lot of excuses, but his wife isn’t too happy to find out Seth doesn’t remember her. Callie isn’t a long-suffering woman. When Seth disappeared, she searched, prayed, and worried. Now she’s come out west to wrangle her long-lost husband.

Seth is willing to make amends. Callie is more interested in shooting him. Can they rekindle their love before one of them goes over the edge?

About the author:

Twitter: @MaryConnealy

Mary Connealy writes romantic comedy with cowboys. She is the author of the acclaimed Lassoed in Texas, Montana Marriages, and Sophie’s Daughters series. Mary has been nominated for a Christy Award, was a finalist for a RITA Award, and is a two-time winner of the Carol Award. She lives on a ranch in eastern Nebraska with her very own romantic cowboy hero, Ivan. They have four grown daughters—Joslyn, married to Matt; Wendy; Shelly, married to Aaron; and Katy—and two spectacular grandchildren, Elle and Isaac.

My thoughts:

Mary Connealy can really bring a fictitious cowboy to life. With The Kincaid Brides series she has imagined not one but three over the top hunky men to entertain us. Over the Edge is the third in the series and focuses on Seth Kincaid and his forgotten bride Callie…oh and don’t forget their son Conner, the one that Seth knows nothing about. Throw in Heath Kincaid, a fourth brother from their father’s other family, and you have the makings of a rowdy cowboy romance.

In the first two installments of this series we got to know the Kincaid family pretty well. We focused on Rafe and Julia in Out of Control. Then we picked up with the story of Ethan and Audra in In Too Deep. Woven into those two storylines were the escapades of younger brother Seth.

We all fell in love with Seth as the dangerously wild yet disarmingly handsome cowboy of all our fantasies. The problem we discover in this book is that with all his escapades Seth is slowly loosing grasp of his sanity. Now that he’s reunited with his beloved Callie can he be brought back from the brink?

This was a delightful finish to a great series. When it comes to romance in the Wild West, Mary Connelly definitely does it best!

When Sadie Lapp steps off the bus in Stoney Ridge after being in Ohio for the winter, she is faced with a decision–one that goes against her very essence. Yet it’s the only way she can think of to protect a loved one.

Schoolteacher Gideon Smucker has been crazy about Sadie since boyhood. But his response to her surprising decision undermines his own reputation–and his relationship with Sadie.

College student Will Stoltz is spending the spring at the Lapp farm as a guard for a pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons–courtesy of the Lancaster County Game Warden. Will needs to get his life back on track, but his growing friendship with Sadie threatens his plans.

The lives of these three individuals intertwine, and then unravel as unexpected twists create ripples through the town of Stoney Ridge . . . and through Sadie’s heart.

Once again, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher intrigues and delights with a story that explores the bonds of friendship, family, and true love. Readers will enjoy every surprise in Sadie’s story as they search for the truth hidden within these pages.

Suzanne Woods Fisher’s interest in the Amish began with her grandfather, W.D. Benedict, who was raised Plain. Suzanne has a great admiration for the Plain people and believes they provide wonderful examples to the world. In both her fiction and non-fiction books, she has an underlying theme: You don’t have to “go Amish” to incorporate many of their principles–simplicity, living with less, appreciating nature, forgiving others more readily– into your life.

When Suzanne isn’t writing or bragging to her friends about her first new grandbaby (!), she is raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

To Suzanne’s way of thinking, you just can’t take life too seriously when a puppy is tearing through your house with someone’s underwear in its mouth. Suzanne can be found on-line at: www.suzannewoodsfisher.com.

My thoughts:

Welcome back to the fictitious community of Stoney Ridge, Pennsylvania. This is the second of the Stoney Ridge Seasons series. The first book in the series centered on Julia, the oldest Lapp sister. This time around we focus on Sadie, the middle Lapp daughter.

I think you could almost pronounce this book as an Amish mystery. Sadie returns to Windmill Farm after spending the winter with Rome and Julia in Ohio. When Sadie arrives home she also brings a newborn baby with her. Most suppose it is hers. She says it is not. But where did it come from?

Will Stoltz is a college kid doing an internship with the game warden. He has been placed at Windmill Farm to keep watch over two rare falcons. There is something mysterious going on with him as well. Who is this Mr. Petosky that he converses with on the phone in such a secretive manner?

Where other novels about the Amish blend, Suzanne Woods Fisher has her own unique voice in the genre of Amish fiction. She has the ability to put forth their beliefs and still capture a vibrant side of their individual personalities. I enjoyed this newest addition to the series and look forward to the third book which is scheduled to be released in January 2013.
