Pulling Back the Shades: Erotica, Intimacy, And The Longings Of A Woman's Heart by Dr. Juli Slattery and Dannah Gresh ~ Book Review & Giveaway

Dr. Juli Slattery and Dannah Gresh
Nonfiction

About the book:

Are You Sexual or Spiritual?

Christian women don’t have to choose between being sexual and spiritual. They have legitimate longings that the Church has been afraid to talk about, but books like Fifty Shades of Grey exploit. Whether you are single or married, sexually dead or just looking to revive your sex life, Pulling Back the Shades will address your desire to be both sexual AND spiritual.

With solid Biblical teaching and transparent stories, trusted authors Dannah Gresh and Dr. Juli Slattery, offer an unflinching look at the most personal questions women ask. The book offers practical advice for women to address five core longings:
  • to be cherished by a man
  • to be protected by a strong man
  • to rescue a man
  • to be sexually alive
  • to escape reality
God designed women with these longings and has a plan to satisfy them. It’s time for women to identify their intimate longings and God-honoring ways to fulfill them.

Read The First Chapter
My thoughts:

Dannah and Juli have put together a book that addresses 'mommy porn' head on. It's not surprising that they have spoken out against this genre. But what is surprising is the way in which they go about it. Instead of shaming women by telling them they are terrible for reading these types of books they go to the root of why we as women are interested in these books.

They have broken our needs as a fulfilled woman into five different areas and then speak to each area. Through the use of a dialogue style filled with personal stories they 'pull back the shades' and reveal the deeper threat to ourselves and our marriages.

The beautiful thing about this book is that it is filled with hope. We don't have to decide if we want to be spiritual or sexual. In fact we were created to be both. (Ever read Song of Solomon?!!) If you want to experience a rejuvenation in your intimate life, pick this book up. It will provide you with tools to use to revamp how you think about sexual intimacy.

The Traitor's Wife by Allison Pataki ~ A Historical Fiction Book Review

Historical Fiction

About the book:

A riveting historical novel about Peggy Shippen Arnold, the cunning wife of Benedict Arnold and mastermind behind America’s most infamous act of treason . . .

Everyone knows Benedict Arnold—the Revolutionary War general who betrayed America and fled to the British—as history’s most notorious turncoat. Many know Arnold’s co-conspirator, Major John André, who was apprehended with Arnold’s documents in his boots and hanged at the orders of General George Washington. But few know of the integral third character in the plot: a charming young woman who not only contributed to the betrayal but orchestrated it.

Socialite Peggy Shippen is half Benedict Arnold’s age when she seduces the war hero during his stint as military commander of Philadelphia. Blinded by his young bride’s beauty and wit, Arnold does not realize that she harbors a secret: loyalty to the British. Nor does he know that she hides a past romance with the handsome British spy John André. Peggy watches as her husband, crippled from battle wounds and in debt from years of service to the colonies, grows ever more disillusioned with his hero, Washington, and the American cause. Together with her former love and her disaffected husband, Peggy hatches the plot to deliver West Point to the British and, in exchange, win fame and fortune for herself and Arnold.

Told from the perspective of Peggy’s maid, whose faith in the new nation inspires her to intervene in her mistress’s affairs even when it could cost her everything, The Traitor’s Wife brings these infamous figures to life, illuminating the sordid details and the love triangle that nearly destroyed the American fight for freedom.

My thoughts:

I am completely amazed that this is a first novel for Allison Pataki. She has taken a well known story and fleshed it out into an even more intriguing tale than we have all read about in our history textbooks.

When I think of Benedict Arnold it is often hard to fathom how he could be such a decorated war hero but in the end wind up being such a traitor to the country he fought so hard to defend. In The Traitor's Wife some of that mystery is revealed. Through the eyes of Clara, the trusted maid to Mrs. Peggy Arnold, we see just how much power a beloved wife can have over her husband.

Peggy is a very complex woman. On the outside she is very beautiful and alluring and knows exactly how to turn a head. On the inside she is scheming and deceitful and always plotting how to come out on top. The name Benedict Arnold may be synonymous with traitor, but the name of Peggy Arnold should hold equal weight.

For all lovers of historical fiction, this book is going to be a great delight. It is my hope that Ms. Pataki will continue to use her incredible talent to bring to light many more of our history's infamous characters and those that worked right along side them.

Be A Frugal Fashionista ~ Never Waste A Coupon!

I don't know about you but I'm just not in the mood for clothes shopping lately. I live in a town with a Tanger Outlet and I know that this is the time of year that all the winter fashions go on deep clearance. But honestly this has been such a brutal winter that I just don't even want to think about buying another sweater. It feels like I'm giving in to the prolonging of the bitter cold. On the other hand I also don't want to buy Spring fashions yet because it would just feel like torture seeing it hanging in the closet just waiting for it to warm up!

But I have a problem . . . I'm a frugal fashionista! Several of my favorite shops have sent me some amazing coupons that I just can't waste. A coupon is like money to me and I would never throw money out the window so why would I throw a great coupon out?!! What's a girl to do? I say gather those coupons up and hit the stores with a new mindset.

The first coupon I received was from Lane Bryant and it was sent to my smartphone. (My favorite type of coupon!) It was a SAVE $10 on your entire in store purchase. I read the details and it didn't exclude sale items or clearance. Once in the store I made a beeline for the clearance jewelry selection.

Check out this adorable matching bracelet and earrings that were marked down to $5 each. Remember my coupon was for $10 off of a $10 purchase. Can you say FREE?!! After digging a bit more I even found the matching necklace that was also marked down to $5, so a complete set would have only cost me $5.

They even had some really cute and fun pieces that included this over-sized costume ring. Wouldn't that be fun to wear on a night out? It was also marked down to $5.

Now just let me insert a word of caution here. DON'T FALL FOR TACKY! No matter how funny you think it would be to give to someone, tacky is still tacky, restrain yourself!

My second coupon was from Bath and Body Works. It was a coupon for a free full size hand soap and no additional purchase was required. I used to feel bad about just getting the free item and nothing else but then I realized that they are the ones that printed and sent the coupon out, so why the guilt on my part?!!

I chose the Fresh Picked Lemon Mint Leaf which is one of their new formulas for hand soap. When I took it to the checkout line they gave me a new coupon code that I will receive a $10 off my purchase when I take their survey about this new formula. Now that's a double bonus to me!

My final stop for the day was at Christopher and Banks. For this store I received a coupon for $15 off of my purchase. When I read the fine print it said that it did not include clearance. I guess I was in an accessory mood so I headed to the scarves and found some really cute ones that caught my eye.

When all was said and done, I finally decided on this cute v-neck t-shirt. On a funny side note, the coupon says WE MISS YOU! When you read the fine print the $15 off of a $15 purchase is only for in store purchases. If you shop online it was $15 off of  a $50 purchase. Guess they didn't miss me as much from my computer. Moral of the story . . . read the fine print. Happy Shopping!

A February Bride by Betsy St. Amant ~ A Contemporary Fiction Book Review

A Year of Weddings, Book 3
Betsy St. Amant
Contemporary Fiction

About the book:

A year's worth of novellas from twelve inspirational romance authors.
Happily ever after guaranteed.

Allie left the love of her life at the altar---to save him from a lifetime of heartbreak. When a Valentine's Day wedding brings them back together, she struggles against her family's destructive history. Can Allie ever realize that a marriage is so much more than a wedding dress?

History repeats itself when Allie Andrews escapes the church on her wedding day---in the same dress passed down for generations and worn by all the women in her family---women with a long history of failed marriages. Allie loves Marcus but fears she's destined to repeat her family's mistakes. She can't bear to hurt Marcus worse.

Marcus Hall never stopped loving Allie and can only think of one reason she left him at the altar---him. When the two are thrown together for his sister's Valentine's Day wedding, he discovers the truth and realizes their story might be far from over. Can Allie shuck expectation and discover who she is as a bride and in the Bride of Christ? And if she ever walks down the aisle, what dress will she wear?

My thoughts:

Even though this is a short novella, it contains so much! This is the beautiful telling of the story of Allie and Marcus. Match made in heaven, destined to live happily ever after . . . except Allie thinks that it just isn't possible. Allie comes from a long line of women with failed marriage after failed marriage. Why should it be any different for her? So at the very last minute she decided to toe off one shoe, then the other. Dig her painstakingly pedicured feet into the carpet for traction, grab the hem of this cursed dress, and just . . . bolt. And so she did.

Four months later her best friend and also Marcus' sister is getting married and Allison is to be the maid of honor. That's all fine and good but how can she show her face to Marcus and his family? She humiliated the whole family by leaving him at the alter. How in the world is she ever going to be able to make amends and perhaps recapture the friendship she lost?

While this is a delightful tale of a Valentine's wedding, it is also so much more. The story is really about redemption and restoration. I loved the contrast between Allie's family and Marcus' family. Betsy St. Amant did a marvelous job of showing how something damaged can be made whole again. A restored car, a refinished workbench and even a remade dress all capture the imagery of how each of us can also be made new. The dings and dents may still be visible in a few areas but when covered in love they hardly show at all.

Rachel by Jill Eileen Smith ~ A Biblical Historical Fiction Book Review

Wives of the Patriarchs, Book 3
Historical Fiction / Biblical Fiction

Back of the book:

Can true love overcome a legacy of betrayal?

Rachel wants nothing more than for her older half sister Leah to wed and move out of their household. Leah wishes her father would find a good man who would love her alone. Unbeknownst to either of them, Jacob is making his way to their home, trying to escape a past laced with deceit and find the future God has promised him.

But the past comes back to haunt Jacob when he finds himself on the receiving end of treachery. The man who wanted only one woman ends up with sisters who have never gotten along and now must spend the rest of their lives sharing a husband. In the power struggles that follow, only one woman will triumph . . . or will she?

Combining meticulous research with her own imaginings, bestselling author Jill Eileen Smith not only tells one of the most famous love stories of all time but will manage to surprise even those who think they know the story inside and out.

My thoughts:

I grew up going to Sunday School so the story of Rachel, Leah and Jacob is not a new one to me. However, through the wonderful writing of Jill I was still enthralled by the retelling. I found myself anticipating what was next as if I didn't already know what was about to happen.

Jill did a masterful job of portraying the struggles of a household that contains two wives. Can you just imagine the tension, especially when the second wife is actually the favored wife? Add to all of that the fact that the two women are also sisters . . . drama at its finest! When the two concubines are added into the mix the situation is almost unbearable.

While this book is primarily from Rachel's perspective I also enjoyed how Jill delved into the background of Jacob and his brother Esau. I found it interesting to ponder how Jacob really felt about his deceit where his brother and father were concerned. I had never really thought about him being introspective about his deception as compared to that of Laban.

This was a quick read, but it was full of beautiful complexities that made me once again consider the Father's plan in our lineage. If you are at all interested in Historical Fiction and specifically Biblical Fiction, I believe you will really enjoy not only this book but this series as a whole.

You're Going to Be Okay by Holley Gerth ~ A Christian Living Book Review

Christian Living

Back of the book:

If your life isn't perfect . . .
If you've ever been disappointed . . .
If you feel stressed or tired . . .

This is for you.

You really are going to be okay. And it truly is possible to live with joy, resilience, and strength no matter what life brings. Yes, there will be hurt and hard times. But God wants to help you find ways to survive, grow stronger, and even thrive--no matter what happens.

With her trademark positive encouragement and probing questions for self-reflection, bestselling author Holley Gerth encourages you to spend less of your life stressing or regretting and more of your life truly living.

Read An Excerpt

My thoughts:

One of the things I like the most about Holley's books, and this one in particular is that you can really hear her heart in the written words on the page. While reading it almost feels as if you are just sitting across the table with her and having a heartfelt conversation.

She once again dispels those myths (or voices) that seem to reach deep inside us and grab hold and tell us that everything is awful. Through the very pervasive use of scripture she gently reminds us that Satan is the father of lies and that God through His Son Jesus has a plan for us.

I always walk away from her books uplifted and encouraged. This particular book has a section in the back called the Going Deeper Guide that includes probing questions that allow you to further contemplate the truths that were presented in each chapter. It is designed to be done on your own or with a group.

I think this would be a great resource to use with a group of girlfriends over a nice cup of coffee. There are ten chapters so it could easily be done over a ten week time span. The discussion is bound to be that of an intimate nature leading all those involved into a deeper walk with Christ.

Shadows of the Past by Patricia Bradley ~ A Suspense Book Review

Logan Point, Book 1
Romantic Suspense

Back of the book:

Nick Sinclair pens mystery novels for a living, but the biggest mystery to him is how he can ever get over the death of his wife--a tragedy he believes he could have prevented. Now that his estranged brother is the only family he has left, Nick sets out to find him. But when he crosses paths with Taylor, all he seems to find is trouble.

Join the chase as Taylor and Nick search the murky shadows of the past for the keys to unlocking the present--and moving into a future they never imagined.

My thoughts:

Taylor Martin is happy in her teaching job at the university and pursuing a lucrative career as a much sought after criminal profiler. Life seems to be going so well, until it isn't. Her fiance has dumped her and married another woman and one of her students seems to be stalking her. Before she knows it her whole carefully created life has blown apart.

She finally decides to return home to Logan Point, Mississippi to try and solve a twenty year old mystery that involves the disappearance of her father. But going home proves to be stickier than she thought it would be. There are things brewing that Taylor had not anticipated.

Nick Sinclair is a best-selling author of mystery novels. While his professional life seems to be on the rise, his personal life is filled with tragedy. His beloved wife died in his arms and he is wracked with guilt over not being capable of saving her. To make matters worse his estranged half brother has reemerged desperately needing his help.

Patricia Bradley has put together a riveting tale that takes you into the depths of the twisted psyche of the human mind. She probes the topic of how far someone would go to fulfill their own desires. I enjoyed the developing relationship between Taylor and Nick, there is some serious steam going on there! As the layers of the story are peeled back you begin to see who is behind all the terror, but until the very end you don't completely understand all the whys. Great opening to what promises to be a chilling (in a good way!) new series.

Choosing the Right Styles for Your Body Shape

If you've followed our blog any time at all you've probably seen some of our Take It or Leave It fashion posts. (I promise we are going to get back to those but the weather has been so cold and snowy here that all I can think of is over-sized sweaters, yoga pants and fuzzy slippers. Trust me . . . ain't nobody needin' to see those pictures!)

From those posts you've gathered that my shopping style is I see something I like on a mannequin and then find it in my size. Well, in my pre-baby days that seemed to work a little better than it does now. Clingy turtlenecks were my favorite looks but now I look better in a v-neck top. While I was browsing the web I found this great infographic from Fashioncents that talks about choosing clothing according to body shape. I'm going to try and keep these tips in mind next time I'm out looking for that new outfit! Hope it helps you too.

Choosing Right Styles for Your Body Shape

PR1ME of Life by P.D. Bekendam ~ A Contemporary Fiction Book Review

Contemporary Fiction

Back of the book:

IS A Simple Life TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR?

Ben thinks the retirement home where he works should be called "Heaven Can Wait a Little Longer While I Golf" instead of Heritage Gardens. But who asked him? He's just the janitor, after all. Of course, his inept boss, the cantankerous residents, and even his attractive podiatrist friend don't know one important thing about him: he was recently a cardiothoracic surgeon, not a broom-pushing custodian.

Ben is in search of a stress-free life with a little freedom from the past thrown in. But will it be that simple to escape who he used to be--and all he used to fear?

An inspiring, quirky story from an award-winning author, Prime of Life reminds us that new life can find us in the most unexpected places.

My thoughts:

The opening paragraph of Prime of Life caught my attention and the ensuing story kept compelling me to turn just one more page until I came to the final word. Let me share with you that opening paragraph so you'll understand.
"I clean rooms in a retirement home. Four years of college, four of medical school, four more in residency, and another four training in cardiothoracic surgery, and now i spend my days scrubbing toilets and mopping floors."
See what I mean? How in the world do you spend all of that time training to be a heart surgeon and then become a janitor. I definitely had to keep reading to find out.  Fairly soon we find out that a horrific event has caused Ben to completely walk away from his old life and assume a new one that is stress free.

Ben is employed at Heritage Gardens which is a retirement community. The characters that reside there are what adds that extra pop to this novel. You can't help but being amused by their antics. They are continually getting into some fix and expecting Ben to bail them out.

All seems to be going well for Ben until one day it isn't. His carefully controlled environment begins to come unraveled when his true identity is discovered and a person from his past unexpectedly shows up. What ensues is a beautifully written story about a life out of control and the Power that can set it right again.

This is Dr. Bekendam's first novel but I am hoping it won't be his last. I loved the story and I'm still smiling over the people that populate the novel. If you like a story that meshes funny and serious I think you'll get a kick out of this one.

Meet Mr. Grey For Valentine's Day?

by Dr. Juli Slattery

This Valentine's Day fans of Fifty Shades of Grey are being teased by a poster touting a movie based on the book to be release one full year from now. The poster reads: "Mr. Grey Will See You Now."

As a clinical psychologist, the Fifty Shades phenomenon had my attention right away. Frankly, I thought it was a passing fad. I never dreamed it would catch fire as it has, but within months the series had opened the door to an entire line up of copycat books so fast that the BBC reported erotica was "cannibalizing" the rest of the publishing industry. And I think the books could cannibalize your love life.

While erotica might originally heighten sexual feelings, over the long haul it erodes something much more important—intimacy. Whether you are married or single, you are looking for more than sex. Your body, your mind, and your spirit were created to crave intimacy. You want more than an imaginary escapade with a fictional character. You want more than a momentary feeling of sexual arousal. You want a real relationship, with sex as an expression of true intimacy. Mommy porn and other forms of pornography are cheap substitutions for the real thing.

My ten-year –old son woke up hungry this morning. Boys tend to do that. What would you think of me as a mom if I fed him cotton candy and coke for breakfast? I may have satisfied his hunger with things that tasted good, but in the long run, I have done him harm. First of all, the food I gave him will not build his body, giving him the nutrition he needs for the day. Secondly, I’m ruining his appetite for good food. What kids wants to eat an apple when he’s been feasting on candy?

This is exactly what mommy porn will do to your intimate life. You are hungry for a relationship that will nourish. By feeding on “sexual junk food” you may feel momentarily satisfied, but never nourished. To make matters worse, you will lose your appetite for the things that create true intimacy.

Porn and erotica are selfish sex, requiring no sacrifice and no effort to love another person. You can have what you want, when you want, and how you want it. The problem is, it’s all fake. The more you chase the counterfeit, the further away you get from the real deal—intimacy. A fulfilling, lasting sex life requires patience, vulnerability, and unselfishness – these are all things that books like Fifty Shades help you avoid.

The journey toward true intimacy is learning to create the safest environment possible so that you and your partner can explore together without fear of betrayal or humiliation. Erotica and porn do the exact opposite. While initially “spicing things up,” they will eventually erode the trust and communication that make love last.

Some women who read erotica end up in sexual addictions, constantly seeking that next sexual thrill. Others leave their real-life husbands or boyfriends to chase a fantasy, no longer needing a real person to be sexually satisfied. They progress in their own private sexual world… a world that doesn’t require the hard work of relationship. Nor does it yield the satisfaction of intimacy. Self Magazine and The New Yorker ran articles on this phenomenon in recent years. They both concluded that if you want to have a great sex life now or in the future, get rid of porn.

There are healthy ways to spice up your love life, but they don’t include pornographic fantasies of some fictional character. If you want to build towards true intimacy, don’t escape. Instead press into the awareness of the real person you are in love with. Instead of pretending that your lover is someone else, revel in the beauty of who he is.

Dr Juli Slattery has a new book coming out about erotica, intimacy, 50 Shades, and being spiritually & sexually satisfied called "Pulling Back the Shades". It releases March 1, 2014- pre order today!

Dr. Juli Slattery & Linda Dillow have also written a resource to help spice up your love life. It's a 10 week study called "Passion Pursuit" complete with a workbook and DVD. A Bible study for women about sexual intimacy in marriage, this audaciously bold study will answer questions that women have but aren't sure where to go for honest and Biblical answers.

Need Valentine's Day Ideas? ~ How About Setting A New Guinness World Record?!!

While Valentine’s Day has traditionally been about flowers, cards and chocolate, this year, the ultimate authority on record breaking, Guinness World Records, is spotlighting the most swoon-worthy Valentine's Day record achievements.

In the spirit of the season, we've compiled a heartfelt list that shows just how deep love goes (32.8 ft below), how a bond between love birds can turn into a marriage (86 years, 9 months, and 16 days to be precise), just how long humans have been writing of their love (the oldest love poem dates back to around 3500 BC) and many more.

But Valentine's Day isn't just for lovers. Some folks will be shunning fancy dinners in favor of attempting to do something "Officially Amazing"- by earning themselves GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® glory.

On February 14th, the Donate Life Coalition of Michigan hosts the "Largest Gathering of Heart Transplant Patients" in a celebration of life that honors patients, physicians, clinicians and support staff as well as educating the public on the critical need for more donors. In addition, Germany based company; Ehrmann Yogurt is hosting the ‘Longest Hug Relay’ at the Santa Monica Piers.

We thought we spread the love by posting a selection of some of our favorite Valentine’s Day related records:

Largest Underwater Wedding

Oldest Love Poem

The oldest surviving love poem is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians, inventors of writing around 3500 BD, and was called by archaeologists by a very un-romantic name: 'Istanbul #2461'. The author is unknown but is believed to have been recited by a bride of Sumerian King Shu-Sin, who ruled between 2037 and 2029 BC. The following is the start of the poem:

Bridegroom, dear to my heart,
Goodly is your beauty, honeysweet,
Lion, dear to my heart,
Goodly is your beauty, honeysweet.
