Summer of Joy by Ann H Gabhart ~ A Contemporary Fiction Review

The Heart of Hollyhill, Book 3
Ann H Gabhart
Contemporary Fiction

About the book:

As summer draws to a close Jocie's world seems serene--but is it just the calm before a storm?

Unbeknownst to Jocie Brooke and her family, two people are making their way to the small town of Hollyhill, Kentucky. One everyone thought was gone for good and the other no one's ever heard of. Still, one thing is sure--they promise trouble. The past is coming to call, threatening to destroy strong relationships that everyone has simply taken for granted.

The summer of 1964 may be winding down, but the controversy in this little community where nothing ever seems to change is just heating up.

Bestselling author Ann Gabhart invites you to Hollyhill for a story both exciting and enduring that will stick with you long after you turn the last page.

READ AN EXCERPT

My thoughts:

Summer of Joy takes us back to rural Hollyhill, Kentucky in the mid 1960's during a turbulent time in our nation's history. The characters that we have come to know and love in the previous two novels are all back. What seems to be a time of joy for the Brooke family comes to a startling halt with the arrival of a person they all thought was long gone.

Ms. Gabhart has done a beautiful job of showing us that family isn't always blood relation. Sometimes family is comprised of those that are related by heart. I enjoyed seeing how each of the members of this family let love and forgiveness shine the light of Christ to those around them.

I suppose that this could technically be classified as a stand alone novel, but I wouldn't personally recommend it that way. There is so much rich history that goes into the complete story that I think you will miss out if you limit yourself to only reading this novel. In my opinion you really should treat yourself and read the whole series in order. It is a wonderful  piece of literature that captures the angst and innocence of the timeframe.

Lose yourself in Ruth Axtell's sumptuous story of discovering one's true self and finding true love.

READ AN EXCERPT

My thoughts:

The Regency period of England has been one of my favorites since picking up Jane Austen in my early teen years. A Heart's Rebellion puts the reader right in the middle of a first London season for Jessamine and her best friend Megan. They are both country girls and at first they do not fit in with the daunting ton of London society. Through a few advantageous connections they begin to be noticed by the elite class. But that is just when the conflicts begin.

Ruth Axtell takes a great look at the complexities of doing what you desire and doing what is right. I was pleasantly surprised with how candid she was about the cavorting that many of the young men take part in. The book is filled with wonderful descriptions of the etiquette of the day. If you are drawn to botany you are going to especially enjoy this book.

Beyond all of that there is a beautiful love story between several of the characters that points the reader directly to the love of God. I think that you will come away from this book satisfied by a heart stirring story and a deeper appreciation of the time period.

The Long Awakening by Lindsey O'Connor ~ A Memoir of Coma, Brain Injury and Recovery

Lindsey O'Connor
Nonfiction/Memoir

About the book:

The riveting true story of a life-threatening coma, a miraculous awakening, and the long quest to regain what was lost.

The day our baby came into the world was the day I left. A day that began all smiles and excitement and anticipation and joy ended with running and panic and blood and tears. And then coma.

I lay suspended in the deep, my newborn unknown. Nothingness. Layers where dark pulled from below, light called from above, and me, trapped in between, longing to break the surface.

To live.

Forty-seven days later when I first saw my husband's face leaning close to me, I knew where, and who, I was. But other things took much longer to know. Learning to restitch life--and love--when everything's changed, and finding who we are afterward, can be the longest journey of all.

I'm Lindsey O'Connor, and this is the story of my long awakening.

READ AN EXCERPT

My thoughts:

It has been quite some time since I have read a nonfiction book that captivated me so thoroughly. As a mom I cannot even begin to imagine the journey that Lindsey and her family went through. I found myself just aching for all the battles they faced and then rejoicing over even the small triumphs.

Can you imagine one minute anticipating the birth of your fifth baby and then the next utter chaos? It's hard to think about being in a medically induced coma for 47 days. Normal day to day activities would continue all around you while in essence your world would stop. But those 47 days were only the beginning of a long road to recovery. With eloquent honesty Lindsay shares about the struggles and the victories that she and her family journeyed through.

One of the most interesting aspects about this book is that it is written by Lindsey. Many times we read a story such as this but it is written by a friend or family member not the actual patient. To read the account and understand what she went through is to see a miracle unfold. This is a story that will leave you with no doubt that God has a unique plan for each of us and He is the one that will determine how we will go about accomplishing it.

I encourage you to get this book and enjoy reading about not only a miracle, but a group of faithful family and friends that journey together to make a beautiful life out of what appeared to be tragedy.

Just 18 Summers by Rene Gutteridge & Michelle Cox ~ A Contemporary Fiction Book Review

Rene Gutteridge & Michelle Cox
Contemporary Fiction

Back of the book:

With just eighteen summers . . . don't forget to make some memories.

After the tragic death of Butch Browning's wife, Jenny, four families begin to realize how precious--and fleeting--their time together is. Each is at a different stage in life: Butch is facing single parenthood. The O'Reillys are expecting their first child. The Andersons are approaching an empty next, and the Buckleys are so focused on providing their children with everything that they've forgotten what they truly need. With just eighteen summers before their children are grown, how do they make the most of that time when life so often gets in the way?

As summer flies by, each of these parents must learn about guilt and grace . . . and when to hold on to their kids and when to let go.

READ THE FIRST CHAPTER

My thoughts:

No matter what stage of parenting you are at there is sure to be something in Just 18 Summers that will reach out and grab your heart. Rene Gutteridge has once again taken up her masterful pen and turned Michelle Cox's screenplay into a beautiful book.

In the first chapter we find out that Butch has recently lost his beloved wife Jenny in a tragic car crash. With that opening I was kind of expecting a sad story about what could have been. Trust me when I say it was anything but that. This story is full of hope. Yes it does delve into some of our deepest fears as parents, but it continually reminds you that it is never too late to change course and take advantage of what we have been blessed with.

One of the surprising things about the book was how funny it was. The scene with the dad taking his eight-year-old daughter to buy a dress had me rolling on the floor. The writers nailed it with all of the sales pitches that we are constantly bombarded with as women. Another priceless portion is the neurosis of being a first time pregnant mommy. Do you remember all of those crazy books you would read and think that you were never going to create a safe enough environment for your little one? Sheer insanity!

I absolutely cannot wait for the movie to come out. If it is even half as good as the book, it is going to be a smashing success. So until you can go see it on the big screen, treat yourself to a fabulous read about the eighteen summers that we are given.

Sneek Peak ~ A Beauty So Rare by Tamera Alexander ~ Coming April 1st!

Belmont Mansion, Book 2
Historical Romance

One of my absolute favorite historical romance author's is Tamera Alexander. A couple of years ago she wrote the first book in the Belmont Mansion series entitled, A Lasting Impression and since that time I have eagerly been waiting on the next book! If you've not read the first book do not fear, each one is a stand alone title so you won't be lost. But . . . you should totally indulge yourself and read them both!

About the book:

Pink is not what Eleanor Braddock ordered, but maybe it would soften the tempered steel of a woman who came through a war--and still had one to fight.

Plain, practical Eleanor Braddock knows she will never marry, but with a dying soldier's last whisper, she believes her life can still have meaning and determines to find his widow. Impoverished and struggling to care for her ailing father, Eleanor arrives at Belmont Mansion, home of her aunt, Adelicia Acklen, the richest woman in America--and possibly the most demanding, as well. Adelicia insists on finding her niece a husband, but a simple act of kindness leads Eleanor down a far different path--building a home for destitute widows and fatherless children from the Civil War. While Eleanor knows her own heart, she also knows her aunt will never approve of this endeavor.

Archduke Marcus Gottfried has come to Nashville from Austria in search of a life he determines, instead of one determined for him. Hiding his royal heritage, Marcus longs to combine his passion for nature with his expertise in architecture, but his plans to incorporate natural beauty into the design of the widows' and children's home run contrary to Eleanor's wishes. As work on the home draws them closer together, Marcus and Eleanor find common ground--and a love neither of them expects. But Marcus is not the man Adelicia has chosen for Eleanor, and even if he were, someone who knows his secrets is about to reveal them all.

I love this series of books for little ones. The stories are engaging with the narrative first person perspective. It allows the child to feel as if the character is talking directly to them which makes a great impact on the truth that is being told.

The stickers and coloring pages are wonderful bonuses that allow the parent to reinforce the lessons learned throughout the book. We spread these activities out over several days and I was quite pleased at how much my little one could tell me about the story as we redid it each day. By the end of the week he was pretty much telling me the whole story!

Even after we used all the stickers and colored the appropriate areas we were left with an adorable book. What a bargain!

My thoughts:

Max Lucado is a master at using an endearing story to drill down truth. He has used this talent in I Will Trust God to bring about the understanding of trusting God even when we don't understand the situation. The truths are taught with easily understood examples that will continue to linger with you and your children.

Hermie and his friends are such adorable garden creatures and they are entertaining for children and adults alike. The voice of Hermie is Tim Conway which brings back fun memories for me as an adult. His voice just puts a smile on my face.

We use DVDs in the car a lot so I am thrilled that this one is about an hour and a half in length. Another thing that I enjoyed were the catchy tunes that were featured. Nothing is worse than having to listen to annoying music on a long trip! I've found myself humming along on several occasions. It is so sweet to hear the littles trying to sing along. The songs do a great job of reinforcing the lessons learned.

If you are needing a new addition to your DVD library I would highly recommend you picking up a copy of this adorable movie. You won't be sorry!

We have partnered with Tommy Nelson to giveaway a copy of I Will Trust God to one of our readers! If you would like to have a chance at winning a copy please use the Rafflecopter form below. (Open to all U.S. residents only.)

Growing Up Duggar: It's All About RELATIONSHIPS by Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger Duggar ~ A Family & Relationship Book Review

Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger Duggar
Nonfiction Family & Relationship

About the book:

In this delightful and very personal book, the four oldest Duggar girls share their hearts and their core beliefs, explaining that it's all about relationships!

  • Relationship with self: The girls share their own personal journeys to self-acceptance and navigating the difficult stage of adolescence.
  • Relationship with parents: You'll find revelations about how Jim Bob and Michelle keep the lines of communication open with their children.
  • Relationships with siblings: Here, you'll get a peek into the Buddy system, how the siblings handle conflict, and how the loss of little Jubilee (their sister) affected their relationships with each other.
  • Relationships with friends: You'll find principles on how the Duggar kids deal with peer pressure and how they interact with friends outside their family.
  • Relationships with boys: You'll learn the Duggar view of dating and courtship, and these four sisters will address the often-asked question of when one of them will get married.
  • Relationship with God: And woven throughout the book, the girls talk about their most imporatnat relationship of all--their relationship with God and their own personal faith and beliefs.
This candid look into what Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger believe and why they believe it will give you practical insights into your own life and will inspire you to evaluate principles that will work for you.

My thoughts:

Like many people I've watched Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger Duggar grow up on TV. In fact I live fairly close to them and have even had the privilege of meeting and interacting with them in person. When their new book, Growing Up Duggar: It's All About RELATIONSHIPS was offered to me to review I accepted it with pleasure.

As an older married woman I found the book very interesting, but I have to be honest and say that I really think it is geared towards young women. The point of view they share, in my view, would more readily appeal to that age group.

With candor and honesty they each share about some of their most intimate relationships that not only include their family and friends, but most importantly the God they love. The stories are interspersed with pictures of the family enjoying each other through the years.

Included in the book is also a short interview type section with the girls' older brother Josh and his wife Anna. They discuss their courtship from how it came about to the requirements that were lovingly imposed on them and to their eventual wedding. I thought this section and whole chapter on the differences between dating and courtship was very revealing about how the Duggars raise and value their children.

I enjoyed reading about the girls' thoughts and perspectives on such a wide variety of topics. If you have watched them on their series or if you have just wondered about their everyday life and values I think you will really enjoy reading this book.

Mesu Andrews
Historical Romance

Back of the book:

IN A KINGDOM CONTROLLED BY CRUEL AND MANIPULATIVE WOMEN, ONE PRINCESS WILL DISCOVER THE POWER OF TRUTH AND LOVE.

Trained as a priestess in the temple of Baal, Princess Jehosheba strives to please the demanding Queen Athaliah, daughter of Jezebel. But when a mysterious letter from the dead prophet Elijah predicts doom for the royal household, Jehosheba realizes that the dark arts she practices reach far beyond the realm of earthly governments.

Forcend to marry Yahweh's high priest in order to further Athaliah and Jezebel's power plays, Jehosheba enters the unfamiliar world of Yahweh's Temple. Can her new husband show her the truth and love she craves? And can Jehosheba overcome her fear and save the family--and the nation--she loves?

With deft skill, Mesu Andrews brings the Old Testament to life, revealing a fascinating story of the power of unconditional love.

Read An Excerpt!

My thoughts:

Reading the Old Testament history books can be intimidating. The names are hard to pronounce and the chronological story weaves through several different books and can be difficult to follow. Mesu Andrews has taken those challenges in stride and brought to us a book that breathes life into those obscure characters on the page.

I really enjoy Biblical fiction when it remains accurate to the original account. In The Shadow Of Jezebel is spot on when it comes to accuracy. Each chapter of the book begins with a Scriptural reference to where that portion of the story is told. It was great to be able to follow along in my Bible as I read the fictional account.

Beyond all of the accuracy, it is a wonderful story. I know we always say we couldn't put it down . . . but truly I couldn't. I'm pretty well versed on these stories and so I knew the framework, but being able to see their day-to-day encounters was enthralling.

The story is very character driven. Jezebel has such amazing power over people, even when she isn't the one in the seat of power. She has raised up a daughter, Athaliah, that follows in her footsteps and continues her reign of deadly deception. But as widespread as their terror is, there is an even more powerful overriding theme and that is love.

There are several examples of the love of a man for a woman. There are even some very beautiful and uplifting stories of love between friends. But the love story that pervades everything is the one of Yahweh for His people. Because of this Old Testament account we are privileged to see how His plan for His people unfolds and uses every aspect of the good and the bad to bring about His will and destiny for those who call upon His name.

Jehosheba is the main character of this story and through her journey from the temple of Baal to the temple of Yahweh we get to see just how completely our God can take a life that was destined to be destructive and turn it around to one that brings life to those around her. This is definitely a book that should be on your to read list. It will leave you with a deeper understanding of that period in history where evil women tried to control everyone, but Yahweh had long ago made a promise to David's descendants . . . and He kept it!

Water Walker by Ted Dekker ~ A Suspense Book Review

The Outlaw Chronicles, Book 2
Suspense

About the book:

Second in the new series from Ted Dekker, master of suspense, whose books have sold 9 million copies. Humming with intensity,Water Walker is a raw adrenaline rush from first page to last.

"My name is Alice Ringwald, but the man who kidnapped me says that's a lie."

Thirteen-ear old orphan Alice Ringwald has no memory beyond six months ago. The only life she knows is the new one she's creating one day at a time with the loving couple that recently adopted her and gave her new hope. That hope, however, is shattered one night when she is abducted by a strange man. In a frantic FBI manhunt, he vanishes. So begins Water Walker, a modern day parable that examines the staggering power of forgiveness, and reminds us that it's possible to live free of the hurt that keeps our souls in chains.

My thoughts:

The Outlaw is back and so is Alice Ringwald. In the second book of the series Ted Dekker has once again used the element of fiction to drive home the power of truth.

The story begins with the abduction of thirteen-year-old Alice by her non-custodial step father. She is brought to a compound in the swamps of Louisiana where her mother is waiting for her. Five years quickly elapse and we see Alice who is now Eden totally enmeshed in the spiritual rituals that her mother insists on.

An unexpected turn of events changes everything for Eden. Through Stephen, the Outlaw, she begins to see things differently but can she really make the changes needed to find freedom both physically and spiritually?

Ted Dekker is the modern day master of parables and metaphors. In this particular story a boat on the storm raged waters of a lake bring particular clarity to the idea of forgiveness and freedom. I came away from this book with a deeper sense of understanding the topic of forgiveness. It is such a deep and profound idea that it is no wonder so many of us fall short. We are completely putting our trust in the wrong thing.

I can pretty much guarantee that I'm going to have to be reading portions of this book aloud to anyone that come within close enough proximity of me. Since you are reading this over the internet, I'll just leave you with a few of my favorite quotes from the book.
"You just stepped beyond one of your fears only to learn that it was an illusion."
"God isn't a boat, or the water, or any boy for that matter. He's in your heart. Let go of your fears of this world and find him there."
"I wish I could save you from all of your troubles, my child. But you must walk the path before you and walk your own waters to the place where only love resides."
"There are very few people on this earth who know what it means to truly forgive and even fewer who walk the path of forgiveness. But the power of that forgiveness is staggering."
"Only in not defending are you ever truly safe. Every time you resist or defend against any perceived threat from the water, you give it power to fulfill that very perceived threat and it will crush you."
"See no harm in that which comes to destroy you because only your costume can be hurt. The real you is always safe in your Father's arms. Always!"

What Predators Don't Want You To Know!

This conversation came up the other day with FitzysMom and I feel the need to blog about it even if it only serves as a reminder to myself . . .

A recent tragedy occurred locally and it has my guard up once again when it comes to predators, specifically child predators.  Usually when this happens we think of what the victim could have done better. While I see people want this to be a learning experience it is never okay to use the victim as a point of view. It's just hurtful and a 20/20 hindsight scenario.

However I have something I feel like I need to share with adults on protecting ourselves and our children. I feel like if we can think like a predator we can better protect ourselves and our children.

The first thing we have to think about is how do predators pick their victims? The answer is they look for easy prey, a small child, someone caught off guard, and the biggest factor, someone who is isolated.

So with that in mind we need to realize that predators are COWARDS! Yes, I put COWARDS in all caps so you will not forget the word. You see to protect ourselves we need to remember this. Predators are not going to put up a fight they want it easy.

The first thing I recommend is to know your neighbors. We know our neighbors and we have several good ones but our neighborhood does have one registered sex offender. As neighbors we discuss this since we have small children. We all make sure that the children know they are never to ever step foot in the person's yard. We watch each other's houses and when there are unknown people on our street we confront them and guess what? They leave! Why? Because there are other neighborhoods where people are not paying attention and that makes it easy for the predator.

You see predators want you to think they are this evil powerful force and we just need to move to the safe side of town but here is the truth there is no safe spot. What predators don't want you to know is that they are COWARDS!

Here is a short list of things about predators:

1) They look for easy prey.
2) They love ponytails  (easy to grab a woman by)  and short nails.
3) They want you to fear them ~ the more irrational the better.
4) They look for isolated victims.
5) They look for someone looking  down while they walk.
6) They look for someone that leaves their phone and keys in the bottom of  their purse.
7) Sex offenders are not always listed on a registry. No, they can be coaches, church people, and Facebook friends!
8) When they stalk your neighborhood they don't want to be confronted. They want you to believe you live in a safe place. No need for porch lights!
9) They look for photos of your kids bathing, swimming, etc. to pick their next victim.
10) They love to ask kids for help and hate adults that ask questions.

Here is a short list of things you want to know.

1) Never go anywhere alone.
2) Look around. If you feel like something is off, IT IS!
3) Know your neighbors.
4) Look people in the eye.
5) Be rude to people that seem off.
6) Carry your keys and phone in your hand while walking.
7) SAY something! Say it out loud so others can hear you too.
8) Talk and PRACTICE scenarios with your kids. No one is too young!
9) Ask yourself am I being an easy target?
10) Have a plan before you go somewhere. Ask yourself what if? Teach your kids this too.

Again, I feel the need to blog about this and if you have any additional tips leave them below! We can all learn from each other. We must be aware and prepare but remember predators are COWARDS! If someone is driving or walking around your neighborhood find out who they are and why they are there. Don't be an easy prey!

Moms' Night Out Movie ~ Perfect for Date Night, Girls' Night, or Family Night!

Last week we were invited to an advanced showing of Moms' Night Out. We were so excited because we were hearing some really great buzz about the movie and quite frankly we were ready for a nice little evening out ourselves!

A sweet friend of ours pointed out that Jesus was photo bombing us! Guess if we are going to be photo bombed then who better than Jesus, right?!!

We each received a bag with information about the movie and a little bit of swag! Then we settled in to watch what proved to be one of the funniest movies we've seen in quite some time. Here's the official trailer, take a look and get a taste of what we saw.

Sarah Drew plays Allyson, a beginning mommy blogger, that is drowning in the chaos of everyday life. Let me just say that if you are a blogger or a mommy of little ones, the beginning of this movie may come across as more of a documentary of your life than a comedy! We laughed so hard that we had to keep wiping our eyes.
Unless you are that unusually neat, tidy, organized and ultra patient mom, I can pretty much guarantee that you are going to relate to this movie on some level.

The supporting cast is fabulous. Patricia Heaton plays the pastor's wife and through her character we get a little peak into the not so perfect things that really go on. Trace Adkins plays a tattoo parlor owner/artist and a big bad biker guy. But believe it or not the line that stuck with me from the movie came from his lips.

This film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 9th, which is Mother's Day Weekend. Trust me on this one, you can't go wrong by taking your favorite momma to see this movie!
To keep up to date on what's happening with the movie check out their website, www.MomsNightOutMovie.com You can also follow them on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest .
