A July Bride by Beth Wiseman ~ A Contemporary Fiction Review

A July Bride
A Year of Weddings, Book 8
Beth Wiseman
Contemporary Fiction

About the book:

A year's worth of novellas from twelve inspirational romance authors.
Happily ever after guaranteed.

Can she forgive the man who left her at the altar?

Alyssa Pennington dated Brendan Myers for three years before she accepted his proposal. For almost a year, Alyssa's friends and family helped her plan a lovely wedding to take place in the church she'd grown up in. It was the happiest day of her life when she walked down the aisle to be united with the man of her dreams. But when Brendan left her at the altar, Alyssa was consumed by humiliation, embarrassment, and a broken heart that wouldn't allow her to trust anyone. Especially Brendan.

Brendan Myers knows he will spend the rest of his life regretting what he did to Alyssa, the only woman he's ever loved. Without her, his life is empty. In one fateful moment, he'd panicked, destroyed their future, and ruined everything. Now he plans to win her back.

But winning back his bride might prove much more difficult than he can imagine. And even if he does get her to the altar again, will she think turnabout is fair play?

My thoughts:

Of the eight novellas that I have read in the A Year of Weddings series, this one rates up towards the top. From the opening scene of Alyssa and Brendan's dream wedding I knew something had to go wrong. After all what would the rest of the story be about? I was expecting Alyssa to be the one to get cold feet, but instead it was Brendan.

Poor Brendan, almost immediately he realized that he had made a horrible mistake. He loved Alyssa more than anyone and really did want to spend the rest of his life with her. But it seems as if every gesture he makes just rubs salt in the wound instead of being a healing balm. Even Alyssa's father has told Brendan to quit. Then Brendan's worst nightmare happens. Dalton turns up and begins to pursue Alyssa. Alyssa has always had a secret crush on Dalton so it seems like a great choice.

As secrets unfold and become known a distinct story-line of redemption and forgiveness emerges. I really enjoyed how everything came together with not only the main characters but the supporting ones as well. My only complaint is that I would have liked this to be a full length novel rather than a novella. There was so much to this tale that I think it would have been nice for Beth to have the time to develop the characters more and to expound on the themes of overcoming and forgiveness. Quite frankly I think I would say this about any novella that Beth Wiseman would write. I just like her stories and this one came to a conclusion much too soon.

Nature Girl: A Guide To Caring For God's Creation by Karen Whiting and Rebecca White ~ A Juvenile Nonfiction Review

Karen Whiting and Rebecca White
Juvenile Nonfiction

Back of the book:

As you become an expert in all things green, Nature Girl offers fun ways to care for God's creations while enjoying the wonders of nature! With activities, recipes, science experiements, and much more, you can discover how to create recycled jewelry, plan a spa day with friends, make your own earth-friendly skin care products, or team up to clean a park or a neighbor's yard.

Each chapter centers on different topics, like water, air, energy, and recycling, and includes crafts, Scripture, games, quizzes, interviews with experts, and quotes from real girls like you. From the itty-bitty flowers at your feet to the air high above your head, discover how you can make a difference for our planet.

My thoughts:

If you have a tween girl that loves nature and all things green then this is the book for her! She will be thrilled with all of the interactive elements to this book. It has a bit of everything to interest and nurture her love of the beautiful creation that God has allowed us to live in.

Nature Girl has interesting information from leading professionals in different fields of science. The commentary is in conjunction with Scripture so it has a nice balance of reminding us that we are to enjoy and take care of the creation. But our worship is for the Creator alone.

This is a very hands on book that expects the reader to experiment and create with all aspects of the world around us. There are very interesting quizzes that are included that help solidify the facts that have been presented within the chapter. The experiments are great skill builders that will help your girl in her biology studies. The crafts are an absolute bonus! I think your daughter will have fun doing several of the projects with her girlfriends.

This really is a fun book that I think you will enjoy going through with your daughter. In fact I think it would make a great book to go through as a family, just hide the title from your boys!

Autopsy of a Deceased Church by Thom Rainer ~ A Christian Life Book Review

Thom S. Rainer
Nonfiction / Christian Life

Back of the book:

No one wants to see a church die.

And yet, far too many churches are dying. For more than twenty-five years, Dr. Thom Rainer has helped churches grow, reverse the trends of decline, and has autopsied those that have died. From this experience, he has discovered consistent themes among those churches that have died. yet, it's not gloom and doom because, from those themes, lessons on how to keep your church alive have emerged.

Whether your church is vibrant or dying, whether you are a pastor or a church member. Autopsy of a Deceased Church will walk you through the radical paths necessary to keep your church alive to the glory of God and advancement of Christ's Kingdom!

My thoughts:

I'm a church girl. I was probably in church the Sunday after I was born. I grew up going every time the doors were open. Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around the church. Vacation Bible School, Backyard Bible Club, Girls in Action, Church Camp, youth group and dozens of others fill my mind when I think back on those years. I met and married my beloved in our church. We've raised our kids in church and are now watching our kids raise their kids in church.

Several years ago something disturbing came to our attention. We had gone back to our hometown for a funeral and spent some time wandering around looking at and reminiscing about our growing up years. We drove by the church of our youth and were stunned and saddened to see it abandoned and up for sale. What had happened to the once thriving and dynamic congregation that we remembered?

Recently I was given a copy of Autopsy of a Deceased Church to read and review. I wasn't really sure that it would be a book that would appeal to the masses but the title had me intrigued so I gave it a read. I was completely wrong in my preconceived notions. This is a book that every church member needs to read. Dying churches aren't just the problem of the preacher and the church staff. It is a problem that we all need to open our eyes to.

Through the pages of the book I could clearly see what had happened with the church of my youth. The signs were there the whole time. Granted we weren't there when the final nail was placed in the coffin, but the death process had been a slow but steady one. It was a process that was happening even back in the day. But like most of these churches we ignored the signs and chose to look the other way.

One of the things that I like best about this book is that it isn't a doomsday missive. Instead it is full of useful information about how to change the inevitable. I came away from this book with a renewed love for the church and the knowledge that I am part of the body that breathes life into it. If you are part of a church I would urge you to pick up a copy of this book and read it and apply it then pass it on to another member. With the directions contained we can make a difference so that generations to come will have a place like we did and do to be nurtured and loved. Forgive my paraphrase but, without the church the people will perish!

Notes From A Blue Bike: The Art of Living Intentionally in a Chaotic World by Tsh Oxenreider ~ A Christian Life Book Review and Giveaway

Tsh Oxenreider
Nonfiction / Christian Life

Inside the flap:

In a sense, it all started with a bike, a powder-blue cruiser with chrome fenders and a wire basket.

To Tish Oxenreider, this birthday gift represented a promise made with her husband--"that we'd try, with all our collective might, to make a new and better life that actually aligned with our values."

In another sense, the blue bike was simply one more milestone in a quest begun years before to live more simply, more fully, and more purposefully. This memoir traces the family's journey from an urban high-rise in Turkey to the congested city of Austin, Texas, and finally to a small town in Oregon. It chronicles false starts, changed minds, periods of chaos and boredom, doubts and dilemmas--but also moments of surprising and transcendent grace as the Oxenreiders gradually learn to live the life they have chosen:
  • buying less and enjoying more
  • changing their approach to food, work, travel, education, and entertainment
  • discovering the grace and the sanity-saving joy of the "80/20 principle"
  • fostering global awareness and a sense of curiosity and adventure in themselves and their children
  • learning to live with partial and imperfect solutions without losing sight of what matters
  • seeking out emotional, spiritual, and physical revival
  • creatively planning and pursuing a life they can believe in
Full of practical hows and compelling whys, Notes from a Blue Bike emerges as far more than a memoir. It's a gentle but persuasive manifesto--an invitation for readers to strike out on their own journeys toward an on-purpose, values-based lifestyle.

You may never own a blue bike. But the message of Notes from a Blue Bike--that you can choose your life and find grace along the way--will resonate in your heart and mind long after you've finished reading.

My thoughts:

I enjoy reading books about other people's journeys. I find it interesting to read about their thought processes on topics that I am interested in. I love to tag along with them through the pages of a book as they navigate through life's obstacles.

In Notes from a Blue Bike we get to literally travel the world with the Oxenreider family. The story begins in 2008 with them living in a small apartment in Izmir,Turkey. The culture is completely different from Austin, Texas where they are originally from. The language is different, the shopping is different, and the relationships are different. Tsh shares her struggles and triumphs in this beautiful place that will wind up leaving a lasting impression on their family.

Eventually the family settles down in small town Bend, Oregon and that's where the real work begins. They moved to Bend to try and capture some of the simpler aspects of living in a small town. But they quickly realize that location doesn't necessarily mean simplicity. Instead they begin to make intentional choices that lead their family in the direction that they desire.

The memoir is broken down into parts entitled Food, Work, Education, Travel, and Entertainment. In each of these sections Tsh shares her family's journey through intentional choices to arrive at a simpler lifestyle. If you are a follower of Tsh on TheArtOfSimple.net you will especially enjoy reading and getting an inside peek into the everyday life of her and her family.

God's Word For Me Bible Storybook from Tommy Nelson ~ A Children's Bible Storybook Review and Giveaway

Tommy Nelson
illustrated by Marijke ten Cate
Juvenile Nonfiction / Bible Stories

Back of the book:

GOD's WORD FOR ME
BIBLE STORYBOOK

a collection of favorite stories in actual Bible text

I have taken your words to heart.
~ PSALM 119:11

As your children unwrap timeless truths from both the Old and New Testaments, they will be reading actual Bible text--selected passages from the International Children's Bible, the translation kids can read and understand.

In addition to Bible stories and intricate and engaging illustrations, God's Word for Me Bible Storybook includes these great features to help your little ones participate with God's Word:
  • Rember God's Word - memory verses so kids can hide Scripture in their hearts
  • Do God's Word - fun activities to help kids learn to live God's Word
  • Pray God's Word - short, meaningful prayers that show boys and girls how to communicate with the Lord
  • Favorite passages such as the Ten Commandments, the Twenty-Third Psalm, the Lord's Prayer, and more
  • A reading chart to help children and parents track their journey through Scripture
By reading favorite Bible stories in real Bible text, kids will develop a love for God's Word at an early age.

My thoughts:

Pouring the Word of God into my kids at every opportunity is important to me. I believe that the words contained within the Bible are the very words of life. Since the stories contained in the book do not change I am always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to convey that message to my children.

God's Word For Me Bible Storybook contains all the major themes of the Old and New Testaments. The text used is from the International Children's Bible and is written on a level that is easily understood for most children. The illustrations that accompany each account are colorful and do a great job of enhancing the story.

What sets this book apart from the dozens of other Bible storybooks are all the little extra learning tools that are included. Throughout the book there are small sections in the midst of each story that contain suggested memory verses, relevant activities, and easy to repeat prayers. Those things are nice and I think they will be very helpful but what I really liked were the resources in the back of the book.

There are a couple of charts that will allow your child to keep track of verses that they have memorized and their reading progress. There are also several sections of things that I think are of utmost importance to teach your children. Among them are the Lord's Prayer, the Twenty-Third Psalm, a list of the twelve apostles, the twelve tribes of Israel and of course the books of the Bible.

This book is just a fabulous resource for family devotions or homeschooling Bible lessons. It is a great beginning for setting up a routine of Bible study for your children that can develop into a life-long journey into the Word of God.

Death Takes A Ride by Lorena McCourtney ~ A Cozy Mystery Review

The Cate Kincaid Files, Book 3
Lorena McCourtney
Cozy Mystery

Back of the book:

It's official. This case is
above her pay grade--and
Cate's in over her head.

Cate Kinkaid arrives at H&B Vintage Auto Restorations to give a friend a ride. But, as usual, trouble finds Cate even there--this time in the form of one dead man, one wounded man, and what appears to be a pretty obvious case of self-defense.

Despite having been merely an unfortunate bystander, Cate finds herself sucked into the case. And the deeper she gets, the more she begins to suspect that the shooting in the H&B office may not have been as cut-and-dried as it appeared.

Bestselling and award-winning author Lorena McCourtney takes you on wild ride in this clever cozy mystery that will keep you guessing.

READ AN EXCERPT!

My thoughts:

My reading in the summertime tends to be of the lighter variety. A good cozy mystery is just the right thing on a long summer evening. The Cate Kincaid Files are especially nice because they strike the right balance of being a light story that has just enough substance to keep you interested.

Death Takes a Ride is the third in the series. Dying to Read and Dolled Up to Die are the first two, but each one can be read as a stand alone. There is an underlying story that threads through each of the novels but each story contains a new mystery that doesn't really hinge on the previous ones.

When the story begins Cate is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her official license that will propel her from being an Assistant Investigator to a full fledged Investigator. When that happens it is expected that she will take over the agency so her Uncle Joe can retire and travel.

Cate is also trying to patiently wait for Mitch to take their relationship to the next level as in marriage. Unfortunately Mitch and his business partner have been offered a lucrative proposal that will take Mitch to another city. Cate begins to wonder if the relationship means more to her than Mitch. Will he ever get over his aversion to her being a PI?

As was the case in the two previous novels Cate didn't go looking to become involved in a murder investigation but it surely sought her out. To say that she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time is putting it mildly. At first it looks like a robbery gone bad, but then things just don't add up. The deeper Cate digs into a different matter involving the murder victim the more her intuition tells her that there is more to it than they first suspected.

The characters are just quirky enough to add humor to the serious theme of murder. Add in a big slobbery dog and a persnickety cat and you have the makings of a story that will amuse you as you try to figure out who the real culprit is.

Bloom Where You're Planted ~ Five Minute Friday

One Word Prompt ~ Five Minutes of Writing ~ No Editing

Today's Prompt: BLOOM

GO!

I have this little plant stake that has the saying “Bloom Where You’re Planted”. I never thought much about it until this past year. It always seemed like a quaint little trinket with a double meaning. Then the totally unexpected happened.

My husband had a major job change that left us living out of a suitcase and a hotel for the past year. It isn’t easy to make friends when you are only in a location for a month at the most. How do you even go about trying to find your niche let alone bloom in it?

Somewhere around month two it finally dawned on me that perhaps this was a season in my life that was meant for me to draw closer to my husband and to my Savior. Once I settled into that thought I really did begin to bloom.

I’m sure some of the hotel staff probably wondered what was going on in my room with the loud praise music and the wacky woman talking out loud to herself. (I tend to talk aloud to the Lord when it is just He and I in the room.) When my husband would come home to the hotel we would spend time together at the pool or just in the room talking about things that we just never had time to before.

The seemingly impossible began to happen. I began to bloom! Not only did I bloom but I would even hazard to say that I blossomed. I not only reconnected with my husband and Jesus but I remembered who I was. Beyond being a wife, mother and grandmother, I’m an artist, a lover of the written word, and a total Coca-Cola addict! (Hey, a girl has to have some vices to survive the wash, rinse and repeat life of living in a hotel.)

Now it’s your turn . . . where are you blooming at in your life right now?

STOP!

The Lord's Prayer Board Book From Tommy Nelson ~ A Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Tommy Nelson
Illustrated by Lara Ede
Juvenile Nonfiction / Board Book

Back of the book:

The Lord's Prayer

Using scenes from daily life, this beautiful book provides a perfect introduction to the prayer Jesus gave us. It is ideal for young children and adults to read together.

My thoughts:

As a Christian parent I feel like there are a few things that are mandatory that I teach my children about the Bible. In my opinion one of the most important things that they need to learn and memorize is the Lord's Prayer. I also think that the earlier you begin to ingrain these truths the better.

If your toddler is anything at all like my toddlers were they spend a great majority of their days following you or their older siblings around repeating what you say and do. Why not take advantage of that trait and begin to teach them simple phrases that will make a large impact on their life?

The Lord's Prayer board book is the perfect way to begin teaching your little one the Lord's Prayer. Each page contains the prayer broken down into short repeatable sections. What a delight it will be for you to hear that sweet little voice repeating the very words our Lord spoke.

I'm sure that your sweet one will love the colorful pictures that depict scenes from their everyday lives. The bonus is a cute little handle that your little one can use to tote the book around. Who can resist the cuteness of those sweet little chubby hands carrying around the Word?!! I surely can't.

The Giveaway:

We have partnered with Tommy Nelson to offer one of our readers a copy of the book The Lord's Prayer. The giveaway is open to U.S. residents and will run through midnight on Wednesday, July 30, 2014. Heart Wide Open by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson ~ A Christian Living Review

Nonfiction / Christian Living / Women

YOU BELIEVE IN GOD.
YOU'RE TRYING TO SERVE HIM.
BUT DO YOU KNOW HOW TO TRULY
LOVE HIM AND LET HIM LOVE YOU?

As a Bible-believing churchgoer, author Shellie Tomlinson harbored a secret in her good-girl heart. she longed for something more than routine faith; she wanted to love God with a genuine, all-consuming passion. So she got honest with Him:

In Heart Wide Open, Shellie invites you to answer the call of your restless heart and refuse to settle for anything less than the intimate friendship of God. Through her heartfelt and honest words, you'll find practical inspiration to help you:

READ AN EXCERPT!

My Thoughts

I first fell in love with Shellie's work through her first two books, Suck Your Stomach In and Put Some Color On and Sue Ellen's Girl Ain't Fat, She Just Weighs Heavy! Those two books just tickled my funny bone. But let me tell you, Heart Wide Open struck a nerve.

This book is written for those of us who grew up with not only Vacation Bible School but Backyard Bible Club. If you could do a sword drill in your sleep or recite the books of the Bible in perfect order or sing all the verses from hymn after hymn from memory, this book is probably written for you.

It's written for those of us who fell deeply in love with Jesus as a child but somewhere along the line that love of all things Jesus began to fade. The tyranny of the urgent began to replace what was important, which is our very relationship with Jesus. We entered that awkward Jr. High era that took our eyes off of Him and put them on him. Then before we knew it we were young mommas with a growing family and all our efforts were directed there. We still love to say and sing "Oh how I love Jesus!" but do we really? Or in the words of Shellie, do we just want to want to love Jesus? The good news is that Jesus promises that He'll take that want to and turn it into a need to.

In fact Shellie talks about how He will take all of those failed Christian rituals of ours like, daily Bible reading and devotions, prayer time, and faith and breathe fresh life into them. The secret is admitting we need the help in the first place. Instead of hiding our lackluster feelings like Adam and Eve in the garden, we just need to get naked before God and cry out "Help me!"

I have to be honest and say that until I read this book I hadn't really realized how apathetic I had become. But as I turned page after page I continued to think, "Yep! That's describes me to a T." The good news is that Shelllie also points out the simple fix . . . Jesus! So if you are longing for a deeper relationship with Christ, pick this book up and let Him pry your heart wide open. Trust me . . . you won't regret it!

Love Comes Home by Ann H. Gabhart ~ An Historical Fiction Review

Rosey Corner, Book 3
Historical Fiction

Back of the book:

WHEN THE FLUSH OF A VICTORY FADES,
THERE REMAINS A WINDING ROAD TO
AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE.

World War II is finally over and the people of Rosey Corner are joyfully welcoming the boys home. The Merritt sisters in particular are looking toward the future. Kate is eager to start a family and live out her dream of happily ever after with Jay. Evangeline craves a beautiful house and encourages Mike to pastor a big-town church. Victoria wants what can never be. And Lorena is growing up and wondering more and more about her birth family.

Each sister must learn to hold her plans with a loose hand, trusting that God will guide and strengthen them as they share the joys and sorrows of life in their little corner of the world.

Award-winning and bestselling author Ann Gabhart invites you back to Rosey Corner for a heartfelt story that closes the distance between the things that were and things that can yet be.

READ AN EXCERPT!

My thoughts:

This is another one of those series that just kills me that I have to wait so long for the next book to come out! I absolutely fell in love with the Merritt family in Angel Sister and delighted in the continued story in Small Town Girl.

Now we come to the third book, Love Comes Home. The story begins just as World War II is declared over. There is great celebrating going on across the country and especially in Rosey Corner. Their men are coming home!

Well, most of the men are coming home. Three of the Merritt sisters have husbands serving in the military but only two of their husbands will be coming home. Such a bittersweet time for those that lost their loved ones. You rejoice that the fighting is over but you mourn over and over the loss of the one you loved and planned a life with.

Even though the other two brother-in-laws come home, they are not the same. War changes everyone. The men have seen things that are just too horrific to forget. The women have been holding down the home front by taking jobs that their men used to have. When the soldiers come home everything changes. The men need the jobs and the women are expected to go back home. Such an unsettling time for the citizens of Rosey Corner.

All these changes bring upheaval. I enjoyed the contrast between Evie's neediness and Kate's strength. They both are faced with similar life challenges and it was enjoyable to read about each woman's struggles and how they coped with what was put before them.

This is a great continuing story about the seasons of life. There is mourning and rejoicing. There is death and new life. There is loss and there is gain. This really is a gentle story about the everydayness of life in a rural town. The characters remind us that our faith in God is what will get us through all the changes that come about. The enduring love of a family, whether from birth or adoption, is long-lasting and where we can feel safe and cared for.

If you are a fan of Jan Karon's Mitford series or Louisa May Alcott's Little Women you are going to enjoy the people of Rosey Corner. Each book can be read as a stand alone, but I would suggest that you treat yourself and begin your trip to the sweet little Kentucky town of Rosey Corner with Angel Sister.

Meet The Cast For The Song ~ A Must See Movie For Every Couple

EVEN THE WISEST OF MEN WAS A FOOL FOR LOVE.

An aspiring singer-songwriter’s life and marriage suffer when the song he
writes for his wife propels him to stardom.

SHORT SYNOPSIS: Aspiring singer-songwriter Jed King is struggling to catch a break and escape the long shadow of his famous father when he reluctantly agrees to a gig at a local vineyard harvest festival. Jed meets the vineyard owner’s daughter, Rose, and a romance quickly blooms. Soon after their wedding, Jed writes Rose “The Song,” which becomes a breakout hit. Suddenly thrust into a life of stardom and a world of temptation, in the form of fellow-performer Shelby Bale, his life and marriage begin to fall apart.

As I said in my review of The Song, this is a movie that every couple should see. It is based on the life of Solomon as told in the books of Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. The story is gritty and real in parts and steamy and romantic in others. Perfect date night material. So what puts it over the top you ask? I say it is the cast and the music. Let me introduce you to them:

JED KING (Alan Powell) Jed is a young, rugged, charismatic (and wise‐beyond-his‐years) singer/songwriter painfully overshadowed bythe legendary musical accomplishments and catastrophic moral failures of his famous father, David King. Jed enters the music scene and a relationship with Rose, determined to maintain fidelity to his music, his bride, and his God. Fame and road-life soon take their toll, leaving him burnt out and broken by the same worldly pursuits that ensnared David.

Best known as a lead singer of Anthem Lights, Alan Powell is turning heads as a new actor with his breakout lead role in the movie THE SONG. Anthem Lights just released “You Have My Heart” and Alan has two feature films in post-production.

You can follow Alan on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and yes even Pinterest!

ROSE JORDAN (Ali Faulkner) Inspired by the love interest in Song Of Solomon, Rose captivates Jed with her breath-taking beauty, wit, and the innocent charm stemming from her deeply committed faith. Romance and marriage soon follow, but after his meteoric rise to fame, she struggles to raise their son in the wake Jed’s absence.

Ali was recently dubbed a Rising Star by “Yahoo Movies!” and has accumulated a list of impressive credits over the last couple of years, including a featured role in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn.”

You can find out more about Ali on her website, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube!

SHELBY BALE (Caitlin Nicol-Thomas) One of Jed’s fellow musicians. She’s a beautiful, brazen, and sultry singer and violinist. Just as hundreds of wives and concubines led Solomon astray, Shelby ensnares Jed in a world of temptation and addiction that nearly destroys him.

Caitlin is an accomplished violinist and recent actress, and a magna cum laude graduate of Berklee College of Music. She first landed the role of Jesse in the pilot for ABC country-music drama, “NASHVILLE” before being cast for THE SONG. In just the last year, she’s played shows in Ireland, Scotland, England, and multiple U.S. states including gigs at the legendary Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry.

You can find out more about Caitlin on her website, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest!

So there you have it! Don't forget to mark your calendars now for opening weekend, September 26-28, and plan on seeing this awesome movie about a redemption story that never grows old.
