My Thoughts

Dee Henderson has provided us with some pretty amazing characters over the years but I think I've found a new one that I adore. Let me introduce you to her. Her name is Evie Blackwell and she works as an Illinois State Police detective. That's interesting enough, but what she is doing in her spare time is fascinating.

Evie has been invited to join a team to reopen and perhaps solve many of the cold cases across the state. Before the task force gets started Evie decides to take some vacation time and look into a couple of cases in the sleepy little town of Carin, Illinois.

Carin has two particular cold cases that have bothered the local sheriff, Gabriel Thane, for years. One hits very close to home because it involves a fellow officer. The other case seems to be farther removed with the crime happening locally but unrelated to the community.

As with all of Dee's novels the main story line is only the beginning. She has once again filled this novel with supporting characters that leave me wanting more of them. I enjoyed watching seemingly unrelated events become intertwined with others. That in fact is the essence of small town life. In such a small community eventually everyone interacts with everyone else.

The themes that are included in this work are gut wrenching. The types of things that you pray never touch your family. Unfortunately in a fallen world bad things happen. While the circumstances are horrific, this story will leave you uplifted as you watch the compassion of the Thane family encompass those that are grieving.

I look forward to many more Evie Blackwell cold cases. It is a romantic suspense novel so not everything is tragic. There are several couples that allow you to look away from the tragedy for the moment and focus in on loving relationships. If you enjoy a fast-paced story full of intrigue and compassion then I think that you will enjoy this one.
