Fiona and the Easter Egg Hunt by Zondervan and Richard Cowdrey

Fiona and the Easter Egg Hunt
Zondervan
illustrataed by Richard Cowdrey

Join your favorite hippo, Fiona, the beloved internet sensation from the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, as she plans an Easter egg hunt for her animal friends at the zoo! Fiona and the Easter Egg Hunt is another addition to the New York Times bestselling Fiona the Hippo series.

Spring has sprung, and new adorable babies are being born all over the zoo! Fiona and her friend Rico the porcupine decide to have an Easter egg hunt for the animals. But when one of Mrs. Swan’s eggs gets accidentally mixed in with the Easter eggs in Fiona’s basket, will Fiona and her friends find the egg before it hatches?

Fiona and the Easter Egg Hunt by Zondervan and Richard Cowdrey

My Thoughts

These Fiona books are such a hit at our house. Of course the illustrations by Richard Cowdrey are a visual treat. But I have to say that the storylines are also rather engaging. They are clever and at the same time help children to understand life lessons.

This time around we are celebrating Spring and the Easter season with Fiona and her friends. She and her dear friend Rico decide to put on an Easter Egg Hunt. It's so much fun for all the little creatures at the Cincinnati Zoo. But then tragedy strikes. Mrs. Swan is missing an egg and it's ready to hatch! Fiona and her friends band together to help find it.

This is an adorable story about friendship and helping others. I think you and your littles will enjoy reading this one over and over. It goes without saying that this would be the perfect addition to this year's Easter baskets.

The Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible Search and Find by Jan & Mike Berenstain | Children's Book Review

The Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible Search and Find

The Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible
Search and Find
Jan & Mike Berenstain
Juvenile Fiction ages 3-6

Explore favorite Bible stories in a fun and interactive way with The Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible Search and Find.. Young readers will find carefully hidden objects in these scenes from familiar Old and New Testament stories, such as Noah and the ark. Jesus's birth, and the Last Supper--all while strengthening early reading and math skills, including attention to detail, concentration, and counting.

Inside The Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible Search and Find

My Thoughts

My grandkids love to do search and find activities. The Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible Search and Find gives even the youngest the opportunity to work on these skills. What I really like about this book is that it has lots of learning activities that also include the central parts of the Bible.

The first search activity is all about the Creation story. There's a short little reading that introduces where our story begins. Then there are about a dozen different objects to find.

I am thrilled that this is a board book which makes it sturdy for those sweet little hands to enjoy over and over. It also holds up to being thrown in a backpack for those car trips and waiting rooms.

I recommend this book to anyone that has littles in their lives. It would be a great gift or addition to your child's personal library.

Wimee Learns About Money by Stephanie Kammeraad

 Wimee Learns About Money
Stephanie Kammeraad
Juvenile Fiction

Join your favorite robot Wimee from the show Wimee’s Words (as seen on PBS) as he learns about what money is and how it works. Readers will have fun as they discover earning, spending, saving, giving, and other money facts.

Wimee is excited! He has received some money from his grandmother as a gift. But he isn’t sure what to do with it. Join Wimee and his friends Moby and Siblee in the park, as they get a lesson in money facts from Mr. Bill. Then follow along as Wimee puts a plan together for how he can use his money.

Wimee Learns About Money by Stephanie Kammeraad

My Thoughts

If you have a grandkid birthday coming up just stick this in your cart! That's my plan. I'm getting a card, sticking some money in it and including this book. It's the perfect combo.

The book does a delightful job of teaching the concepts of earning, saving, spending, and giving money. The characters are from a popular children's show so most likely they will be familiar with them.

There's also a great section in the back that goes more in depth of what is money, how do you get it, what do you do with it, and finally where do you keep it. I thought this section would especially appeal to home educators. It would be a good supplement to any beginning unit on money.

It's also worth noting that this book is just one in a series of Wimee books. If this one interests you go take a look at the others. I think you'll like them too!

Inside Read and Rhyme The First Christmas

My Thoughts

Glenys Nellist is one of our favorite children's authors. She has such a delightful way of presenting the gospel to children. In this particular title she tells the story of the Nativity in a beautiful rhyming verse.

I love the eye-catching illustrations. The colors are so vibrant and the characters faces are adorable.

Now let's talk about the fun interactive part. There are 24 little flaps that hide a word that completes each phrase. The word that is hidden is quite apparent when the phrase is read. It's a delight to see your child blurt the word before the flap is lifted.

If you have little ones I recommend this little board book as a new addition to your Christmas reads!

Inside the Jesus Storybook Bible Advent Activity Book

My Thoughts

By far this is our favorite new addition to our Christmas book collection. For many years now we have been using The Jesus Storybook Bible to do our nightly Advent readings. We printed off the corresponding ornaments. Jazzed them up a bit and enjoyed the readings and the adding an ornament to the tree each night.

Well as time would have it, the kids are steadily getting older and for the past year or two we've been thinking that we needed just a little something extra. Zonderkidz must have heard us because they came up with this perfect companion piece.

This new book includes pop out ornaments, games, recipes, craft projects, songs and much more. The lovely part is that the directions are clear and each day's activity is fun but also very doable for the overloaded mom during this season.

If it's only in the budget to add one book this season . . . get this one!

Kids Daily Devotional Book Ideas for Christmas

When we're putting together Christmas gifts in our house we tend to go by the following little saying:

Something you want.
Something you need.
Something to wear.
Something to read.

Under the something to read category I try to find a fun fiction book and then something to encourage my children's and grandchildren's walk with God. Some years it is a new Bible. Some years it is a missionary biography. And some years it's a new daily devotional. This year it's going to be a daily devotional.

With that in mind I thought I would share with you some of our favorites that we have come across lately.

Loved and Cherished 100 Devotions for Girls by Lynn Cowell and Michelle Nietert

Lynn Cowell & Michelle Nietert
Juvenile Fiction (age 8-12)

Am I loved? Am I valuable? Am I smart? The questions can go on for as long as a girl’s imagination and self-image allow. A girl needs to know that she is enough because of God’s love.

So often, girls and women give in to the lies that how they look and how popular they are determines their worth. But as children of God, we can have the confidence that we are loved, protected, secure, whole, and valuable because God is our heavenly father.

Inside image of Loved and Cherished

My Thoughts

This is one of my favorite daily devotionals for girls in recent years. It's not new, in fact I think it came out in 2020 but it is still available. The main thing that I love about this one is that it continually reminds girls that they are enough. Not because of what they do or what they have but because they are made in God's image and that's enough. It's the perfect book for young girls.

100 Devotions for Kids Dealing With Anxiety by Justine Froelker

Justine Foelker
Juvenile Nonfiction (Tween and Teen)

Life with anxiety is like a rollercoaster, with good days and bad days, but with constant assurance of God's love your child will be able to manage their anxiety. This devotional meets children where they are by equipping them with the resources to develop a deeper relationship with God and empowering young minds to embrace everything that makes them who they are. With Scripture passages, devotional readings, and journal prompts, children will have access to the tools, tricks, and tips on the best ways to face anxiety issues.

My Thoughts

The last few years have left most of us with some degree of anxiety, especially our kids. We know that the Bible says to cast all our cares on God but sometimes that's a real struggle. This book gently reminds you that the peace of God is available and attainable. It's designed for teens and tweens but I thoroughly enjoyed it as an adult.

My only negative about it is the title itself. Not sure it would make a great stocking stuffer at Christmas but I had to include it in the list because it is such a wonderful resource for those of us that need it.

God's Power In Me by Margaraet Feinberg

Margaret Feinberg
Juvenile Nonfiction (ages 8-12)

God’s Power in Me is an interactive 52-day devotional that encourages young readers 8-12 to break free from negative thinking and focus on the positive truths of who God made them to be. Through daily devotions paired with a 90-second affirmation kids can say aloud every day, readers will grow closer to God and learn to challenge the personal doubts that might be holding them back.

I’m not good enough. I don’t deserve to be their friend. And things will never change. Kids tell themselves things like this every day, and popular Bible teacher and speaker Margaret Feinberg wants to help them defeat those self-doubts and stop believing the lies—because God only tells us the truth about ourselves, and that truth is we are all meant to have a joyous and powerful life.

My Thoughts

This is another of my favorites. What I like the best is that each day presents a common lie that we believe and replaces it with a truth from the Word of God. For instance day 32 says, Lie: Everyone Hates Me.....Truth: No Weapon Formed Against Me Will Prosper. (Isaiah 54:17)

It's a great way to start the day by dispelling those whispered lies from the enemy. Margaret Feinberg has put together daily entries that are easy to read and understand for younger readers. After going through it I thought that it would be a good idea to write out these daily affirmations on index cards that could be flipped to over and over.

A Mindful Moment by Irene Kraegel

Irene Kraegel
Juvenile Nonfiction (Teens)

A Mindful Moment is the book you need to center yourself with God. A guide for Christian prayer, meditation, and mindfulness, this unique devotional includes guided meditations that are Biblically centered and 100% accessible to teens just like you.

This devotional focuses on four key categories—physical sensations, negative emotions, compassion to self, and lovingkindness to others. It can be used as a guide for daily meditation and reflection but allows for flexibility, providing inspiration and God’s peace in any situation. Use it on your journey to self-love and then let it take you to a place of love for all as Jesus calls us to love.

Inside look at A Mindful Moment by Irene Kraegel.

My Thoughts

I understand that the term mindfulness can have new age connotations and I am admittedly leery of it myself. In the introduction to A Mindful Moment Irene Kraegel says the following, "Meditation is taking time to focus your attention of a particular thing, and pulling your attention back to that thing over and over whenever your focus wanders." She then goes on to say that mindfulness "involves focusing our attention on the present moment (over and over), and doing that with an attitude of compassion, openness toward what is new, and non-judgment."

I agree with her definition of meditation but I could split hairs on mindfulness. Overall I think this book does a pretty good job of pointing the reader in the direction of continuing to take captive their thoughts and focus on God and His purpose in your life. I would consider it for mid to older teens on my gift list.

The Case for Christ Devotions for Kids by Lee Strobel

Lee Strobel
Juvenile Nonfiction (ages 8-12)

The tough questions kids 8-12 ask about faith, Jesus, and Christianity are investigated and answered in this 365-day devotional that uses the historical facts and theological truths found in The Case for Christ to help young readers develop their faith and understand what it means to be a Christian. Each day’s reading also includes reflection questions, helping kids think through what their faith personally means to them.

Become an expert witness for Jesus! For kids who want to learn more about Christianity or simply have questions about the Bible, this devotional helps young readers understand why Jesus’s ministry and miracles are true and why we can confidently believe in Jesus today.

Inside look at The Case for Christ Devotions for Kids by Lee Strobel.

My Thoughts

I read the original The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel several years ago when it first came out. I've been a fan of it and all the follow-up or spin off books that have since been published. This devotional book for kids is a great resource for your family. It takes common questions that we have and points to Scripture for the answer.

Lee Strobel has a voice that resonates with the reader. I have loved this book enough to give it away several times now. I of course think it would be good for part of a Christmas gift but beyond that I think it would make a great addition to any household library. I could see it being used during family devotions because it is written in a way that younger kids can understand it but older kids and adults will also find it compelling.

All I Am by Caroline Pignat

All I Am: A Catholic Devotional for
Caroline Pignat
Juvenile Nonfiction (teens)

The teen years can be a confusing time of figuring out where you belong, who you are, what you can do, and who you can become, all while searching for a sense of safety as you engage with the world. In All I Am, these core needs of belonging, identity, ability, purpose, and security are explored through God’s traits in the Bible, showing readers 13 and up that the great I AM not only meets our needs because of all the amazing things he is, but how we also embody those traits because we are his children.

Inside the pages of All I Am are 90 devotions from a Catholic perspective that use conversational language to apply God’s truth to your life through relatable examples and real-world applications, each helping you think, act, and be like Jesus and grow your faith and self-esteem.

Inside of All I Am by Caroline Pignat.

My Thoughts

We are not a Catholic family but I have to tell you that I really liked this daily devotional. The book is broken into five different sections: Where I Belong, Who I Am, Why I Am Safe, What I Can Do, and Why I Can Do It. Within those sections are daily devotions that start with a Scripture passage and then have a short devotion and finally a section that allows the reader to dig deeper.

The quotes in the book are all from Saints and Popes but other than that it could be from any other denomination.

The depth of the subject matter does lend itself to teenagers rather than younger children but could possibly be used in family devotions with some modifications and explanations. If you are of the Catholic faith I really think that you would enjoy this book.

Well friends, that's it for my list today. I hope you found some inspiration for your Christmas list. I look forward to hearing about what titles you are including in your gifts this year.

Literary Critters: William Shakesbear's Journey for Inspiration by Sophie Corrigan | Children's Book Review

Literary Critters by Sophie Corrigan

Sophie Corrigan
Juvenile Fiction (ages 4-8)

Literary Critters is a truly unique picture book, introducing young readers to classic literary figures and encouraging them to use their imaginations. As William Shakesbear visits his fellow Literary Critter Guild members, he’s greeted with lots of advice from his author friends and has some adventures along the way.

William Shakesbear

My Thoughts

Children's books are meant to be read over and over. That's why in our house we appreciate books that appeal to the child and the adult. I'm especially drawn to clever children's books. And this one fits that description to a T.

William Shakesbear is needing some ideas for a new play. When nothing comes to him he sets off on a journey to visit some of his literary critter friends for some inspiration. Among his friends are Mole Dahl, Crane Austen, Beatrix Trotter, Edgar Talon Crow, Yak Kerouac, C.S. Shrewis and Langston Mews. Along the way they each give pieces of advice but nothing quite resonates until he meets up with Chicktor Hugo.

This book is such a brilliant way to introduce our littles to some literary giants and spark a love of reading and writing their own stories. The artwork is absolutely darling. If you are fans of the Pugtato series of books then you are already familiar with the author. (If not you should check those books out too.) We think it would make a wonderful addition to your home library.

God's Creation Help Tell the Story by Joanne Liu | Children's Book Review

God's Creation by Joanne Liu

illustrated by Joanne Liu
Juvenile Nonfiction

God’s Creation: Help Tell the Story, presented in the same style as Press Here, offers an exciting way for children to experience God’s creation of the world as they interact with the words and illustrations, follow along with easy-to-understand directions, and watch the story of God’s creation unfold.

This interactive picture book not only engages and keeps kids’ attention, but also helps them internalize and commit the story to memory. Bold, conceptual art by artist Joanne Liu leaves room for little ones’ imaginations to expand the story and begin to understand the greatness of God and his creation.

God’s Creation: Help Tell the Story is perfect for:
  • Reading aloud with active preschoolers and early readers who will love participating in the story
  • Encouraging kids to learn the creation story from the Bible
  • Fans of Press Here, Don’t Push the Button, and Tap the Magic Tree

God's Creation by Joanne Liu

My Thoughts

I adore beautifully illustrated children's books. Don't get me wrong the words that are included are important but for a young child the pictures are what bring the story to life.

Joanne Liu has used a mixture of tempera paint and finger-paint style of illustrations to demonstrate the timeline of God's creation. The colors are vibrant and I personally think it would be a fun activity for your preschooler to recreate the pictures.

Another aspect that is going to be a hit is the interactive directions that are given during the telling of the story. I think this allows the child to feel like they are part of the story and keeps them engaged.

I recommend this book for your personal, church, or preschool library. It would also make a lovely gift for your favorite little one.

The NIV is the result of over 50 years of work by the Committee on Bible Translation, who oversee the efforts of many contributing scholars. Representing the spectrum of evangelicalism, the translators come from a wide range of denominations and various countries and continually review new research to ensure the NIV remains at the forefront of accessibility, relevance, and authority. Every NIV Bible that is purchased helps Biblica translate and give Bibles to people in need around the world.
