God Bless Our Christmas by Hannah Hall ~ Christmas Gift Guide Giveaway

Hannah Hall
Juvenile Fiction (ages 1-4)

Bundle up for a snowy Christmas
full of God's blessings.

Cocoa and carols and sledding and lights--these are just some of our Christmas delights! Join our snow-animal families as they celebrate God's blessings at Christmastime.

My Thoughts

If you love to read Christmas books with your kiddos then this is a wonderful little story to add to your collection. The sweet little creatures share the different Christmas traditions that they have with their families.

The sled dogs pick the perfect tree. The polar bears love to go sledding and then warm up with a cup of hot cocoa. The little foxes make delicious Christmas cookies to eat and share. The penguins decorate their tree as a family. The whales sing carols to the delight of all. The owls are very talented at wrapping gifts. But above all other activities they all realize that God's Gift is the biggest blessing of the season.

We loved the fuzzy little illustrations of some of our favorite animals. The gently rhyming story adds to the beautiful book that will become part of our Christmas story collection. This would be a nice book to read with your little ones as you snuggle together in the evening in front of the tree.

Song of the Stars: A Christmas Story by Sally Lloyd-Jones ~ Christmas Gift Guide for Children

Sally Lloyd-Jones
Juvenile Fiction / Christmas

The skies shouted it to the seas that thundered it to
the waves that roared it to the great white whales
that sang it to the starfish in the deep.

And tiny sandpipers danced it on shining sands . . .

"It's time! It's time!"

The entire universe is breathless with anticipation . . .The joyous news spreads out across fields, deserts, oceans--from stars, to trees, to robins, to flowers. Sheep tell their young. Angels sing to the shepherds. And together they all join in nature's great chorus of praise to the newborn King. The long-awaited child has come!

My Thoughts

Since it was first released, Song of the Stars, has been a favorite in our family. We all adore the beautiful illustrations of the creation and creatures as they listen to God and the angels declare that "It's time!".

I especially like how the anticipation builds and builds as the story goes along. I find myself reading it aloud softly at first and then as the big event gets closer and closer my voice rises in volume and intensity. When I look around at our family we all seem to be leaning in towards the story as if helping the event along.

If you are looking for a new Christmas book for your little ones this year, I can't recommend this one highly enough. It truly is destined to become a Christmas classic.

Disney's Pictopia Board Game from Wonder Forge ~ Christmas Gift Guide

THE ULTIMATE PICTURE-TRIVIA FAMILY GAME!

Make family game time magical!

Discover playful trivia spanning decades of Disney magic, from animated classics and blockbuster movies to television hits and dazzling theme park destinations. It's a game of teamwork--with a competitive twist! Along the way are guess-my-answer questions that reveal how much you know about the other players!

My Thoughts

During the cold winter months and especially around the holidays our family plays a lot of games in the evenings. We like to choose ones that allow everyone to play regardless of the age. When we first received Disney Pictopia I was a bit worried that it would not work for all of us. I'm not talking about the kiddos, I'm talking about the adults! As the grandma of the bunch I am familiar with classic Disney but the current shows are just off my radar.

I am pleased to say that it was a hit with all of us. The questions were a great mix of old and new. As with the other Pictopia games the cards that contain the questions are made up of picture clues for the answers. That was a great bonus for the little ones playing. There were times that they recognized the character but couldn't verbalize the correct name. For those of us that are just a bit older, the pictures gave wonderful contextual clues.

The game set up is easy. There are enough pieces for six individuals to play. There are too many of us to play individually so we used teams. That worked perfectly because we paired an adult with a child. Between my grandchild and I we were able to master most of the questions.

The recommended age is 7+ which seems appropriate if you are doing individual play. We have a 4, 5 and 6 year old that also wanted to play. With the pictures on the cards and adults on the teams it worked nicely.

If your family likes to play board games together you really should get this game. I'm sure that our family is going to benefit from hours of fun with it.

Disney Pictopia Family Trivia Game can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, Toys R Us and Target

Christmas at Rose Hill Farm by Suzanne Woods Fisher ~ Christmas Gift Guide for Book Lovers

Suzanne Woods Fisher
Contemporary Fiction / Amish / Christmas

Bess Riehl is preparing Rose Hill Farm for her Christmas wedding, but her groom isn't who she thought it would be. Billy Lapp is far away from his Amish roots working as a rose rustler for Penn State and wants nothing to do with Stoney Ridge, his family, or Bess. And that suits Bess just fine. Why should she think twice about a man who left without a word, without any explanation? It's time she moved on with her life, and that meant saying yes to Amos Lapp, Billy's cousin and best friend. But as Bess and Amos's wedding day draws near, her emotions tangle into a tight knot. She loves Amos. Yet she can't forget Billy.

When a "lost" rose is discovered at Rose Hill Farm, Billy is sent to track down its origins. Get in, identify the rose, and get out. That's his plan. The only catch is that he's having a hard time narrowing down the identity of the lost rose, and he can't get those tropical blue eyes of Bess Riehl out of his mind.

As the history of the lost rose is pieced together, it reminds Bess and Billy--and Amos, too--that Christmas truly is the season of miracles.

Join bestselling, award-winning author Suzanne Woods Fisher for an Amish Christmas to remember. Filled with heart-twisting moments amid the sweet anticipation of love, this story will charm readers into the holiday spirit.

My Thoughts

Fans of Suzanne Woods Fisher's work are going to love this year's Christmas book. It is again set in Lancaster County and contains characters that we have come to know and love through some of her other series.

The main character is Bess Riehl who we first met in The Search (Lancaster County Secrets, Book 3). We meet up with Bess as she is busy planning her wedding to Amos Lapp. He isn't her first love, that would be Billy, but Billy is nowhere to be found and Bess is just trying to get on with her life.

When a mysterious variety of rose is found Bess and her family decide to try and find out its origins. They send for a rose expert and low and behold it winds up being the long lost Billy. Billy has secrets he's hiding and doesn't want to risk getting involved with Bess again. He wants to identify the rose and then leave. But of course God has other plans and sends the mysterious George to help guide Billy.

I loved this quick little novella. It was not only a great story of redemption and restoration it was also a very interesting lesson on the science of roses. It gave me a whole new appreciation for those planted around my house. Come spring I am going to definitely be wondering about the origins of my particular plants.

Another exciting little follow up to this book is that the story continues in the Stoney Ridge Seasons series. It is such a fun little peek into the lives of those familiar characters. This would make the perfect stocking stuffer for the book lover on your Christmas list.

I Can Learn the Bible by Holly Hawkins Shivers ~ Children's Book Review and Giveaway

The Joshua Code for Kids
Holly Hawkins Shivers
Juvenile Nonfiction

Help your children hide
God's Word in their hearts.

As parents, we want our children to learn about the Lord and know His Word. What a joy it is to watch them begin to understand God's Word, speak it from memory, and be transformed as it becomes a part of them! It's our job to equip them for life, to prepare them for whatever lies ahead. The words of God's truth they hide in their hearts will be with them forever--a source of guidance, comfort, and spiritual nourishment no matter where they go.

I Can Learn the Bible adapts O. S. Hawkins's The Joshua Code for kids, guiding parents in helping their children understand and memorize fifty-two Bible verses. Each engaging weekly devotion prompts discussion and explains the accompanying verse in a way that kids can understand. Written by Holly Hawkins Shivers, daughter of O. S. Hawkins and a mother of little ones herself,  I Can Learn the Bible will help your children learn and live the Scriptures.

Plant the seed of Scripture in your children's hearts--and watch them grow!

My Thoughts

Scripture memory has long been a part of my life. Several years ago I came across a wonderful book called The Joshua Code. It was a great tool to use for memorizing a Scripture a week. Now the daughter of that book's author has come out with I Can Learn the Bible which is designed on the same template to allow your children the opportunity to also learn a Scripture a week.

One of the things that I really liked about this book was the fact that it follows along with the original with the exception of one week. So it would make a perfect plan for the whole family to spend the next year studying and memorizing Scripture together.

The children's version is simplified but not dumbed down. The same concepts are taught to children just at an appropriate level to enhance their understanding of what is being presented.

From personal experience let me just say that there is nothing more precious coming out of a child's mouth than the life giving Word of God. You won't regret one moment of helping your child hide God's Word in their hearts.
