Sunny Days Ahead by Lindsay A Franklin

My Thoughts

If you are a living and breathing person it's pretty much a given that you have experienced some pretty cloudy seasons in your life. We all have and we all know how hard it is to remain optimistic during those seasons. In Sunny Days Ahead Lindsay Franklin provides a roadmap to get you back on the path to a better frame of mind.

The set up for this daily devotional is simple. Scripture first. Then author thoughts and suggestions. And finally journaling from you. This should take around 10 minutes. . . very doable!

I liked how each successive day led into the next. By the end of the book you can have confidence and simple tools to help you right your thinking and get you back on track. The only drawback was the journaling portion is too small for me. I just used a separate journal. In the end that worked out better because now I have a clean book that I can pass on to a friend in need.

I should also say that I don't think you necessarily need to be in the midst of a crisis to benefit from this book. I thought it was a useful tool to remind me about the important things and actions that will keep me in a right frame of mind even in the midst of a storm.

The Bookseller's Promise (The Amish Bookstore #1) by Beth Wiseman | Amish Fiction Review

The Bookseller's Promise by Beth Wiseman

The Amish Bookstore #1
Amish Fiction

An unrequited romance and a rare book . . .

Yvonne Wilson makes the trek from Texas to Indiana with just one goal in mind: to convince Amishman Jake Lantz to sell her client a rare book from his collection. But Jake is as strong-willed as Yvonne. On the eve of his grandfather’s death, Jake vowed never to sell the book, and he intends to keep that promise. But he can’t say more than that, having never read it and not knowing why it was so dear to his grossdaadi.

Eva Graber has loved Jake since he hired her to work in his bookstore years ago, but he doesn’t seem to notice she’s blossomed into a beautiful woman. When Yvonne shows up and seems like she might turn Jake’s eye, Eva suggests she and Jake should read the book together.

What happens after that surprises them all, and the book leads the trio deep into mysterious questions about life and death, love and loss, and the impenetrable purposes of God.

My Thoughts

A new series from Beth Wiseman and the story involves a bookstore . . . what could be better? How about a little mystery and romance? Well that's in there too.

Jake Lantz inherited the bookstore from his grandfather along with a mysterious old book. Jake's grandfather gave it all to him with the only stipulation being that he not ever sell the book. Jake made the promise and fully intends to keep it.

It just so happens that Yvonne Wilson from Texas is looking for that exact book and tracks it down to Jake's bookstore. On a whim she decides to make the trip to Indiana to try to convince Jake to sell it. That trip will change all of their lives.

Throughout the story I loved the subtle reminder that no matter the circumstances God works everything out for His people. It's often in the bleakest of times that He makes His plan known.

I enjoyed the faith journey of Yvonne and the budding romance of longtime friends Jake and Eva and I look forward to reading more about these delightful people in coming books in the series.

Merry Christmas Nighty Night by Michael W Smith

Michael W Smith

It’s so hard to fall asleep on Christmas Eve! In this addition to the Nighty Night series from Grammy Award-winner Michael W. Smith and VeggieTales’ Mike Nawrocki, the familiar rhythm of the classic poem “The Night Before Christmas” helps tell an original musical story that captures the wonder of Christmas Eve while helping little ones settle in for a cozy “Silent Night” even when they have trouble going to bed.

Merry Christmas, Nighty Night is a gentle, heartwarming tale that combines an original song with a fun bedtime story to relax little ones and get them ready to sleep. This cute (and sleepy) adventure leads two children to discover that when you’re having trouble falling asleep, a Christmas lullaby might just do the trick.

Over in a Stable by Suzanne Nelson

Suzanne Nelson

Over in a Stable, written by award-winning author Suzanne Nelson, is a beautiful and engaging Christmas read-aloud for you and your little ones that tells the story of the nativity, featuring the memorable counting and cadence of the beloved classic poem "Over in the Meadow."

Over in a stable, though the hour was growing late,
grazed one mother sheep and her fleecy lambs eight.
"Give," said the mother.
"We give," said the eight.
And they gave their hay to make a bed to rest a King so great.

With vibrant illustrations from artist Aleksander Zolotic and gorgeous verse by award-winning author Suzanne Nelson, Over in a Stable counts up from one little drummer boy to ten little children, showing the animals and people who gathered to celebrate the arrival of baby Jesus on that miraculous night in Bethlehem.

An Ivy Hill Christmas by Julie Klassen

Julie Klassen

Richard Brockwell, the younger son of Ivy Hill's most prominent family, hasn't been home for Christmas in years. He prefers to live in the London townhouse, far away from Brockwell Court, the old family secret that haunts him, and the shadows of his past mistakes. But then his mother threatens to stop funding his carefree life--unless he comes home for Christmas. Out of options, he sets out for Ivy Hill, planning to be back on a coach bound for London and his unencumbered bachelor life as soon as the festivities are over.

But Christmas in the country presents unforeseen surprises, including encounters with an orphaned apprentice, the first love he disappointed years ago, and Arabella Awdry, a young lady who is far more appealing than he recalled . . . and determined to have nothing to do with him.

Will Christmastime in Ivy Hill, with its village charm, kissing boughs, joyous songs, and divine hope, work its magic in his heart . . . and hers as well?

The Christmas Swap by Melody Carlson

Melody Carlson

All Emma Daley wants this holiday season is a white Christmas. But the young teacher and struggling musician sure can't find that in sunny Arizona. Luckily, there's someone living in a perfect mountain home in the Colorado Rockies looking to make a vacation trade this year.

Tyler Prescott is an in-demand songwriter and talented musician who put his own singing career on hold to write songs for celebrity acts to perform. When his mother convinces him to do a vacation trade for Christmas, he never imagined one of the houseguests would be so sweet--or so strikingly pretty. Naturally, he decides to stick around, and, to get better acquainted, he poses as the house's caretaker. But when Emma's friend Gillian discovers his true identity and sets her sights on him, things
get . . . messy.

My Thoughts

I have been so pleased to see more and more of our teen and tween daughters and granddaughters join us in worshiping through Bible journaling. It can be such a beautiful expression of praise and I am thrilled to see the girls in my family join in.

Zondervan has come out with several new journaling Bibles especially designed with girls (of all ages) in mind. The covers are just stunning. One is in turquoise and the others are in pink, mint, and purple. We have the turquoise edition and I love the whimsical designs mixed with just the right amount of bling!

The inside design is single-column Scripture with wide lightly-lined margins. It is perfect for the writer and artist alike. I find that we do a mixture of both. Sometimes a quote strikes me and so I copy it. Other times a picture comes to mind and I place that in the margins. There is a lot of white space to accommodate whatever your preference may be.

Can I just say that while this particular Bible is being marketed towards girls it is also appropriate for full-grown women. The cardboard wrapping does say for girls but it doesn't say that anywhere on or in the Bible itself. If you love the cover like I do and want to give it to an adult just remove the wrapping!

With the holidays just around the corner this would be a wonderful gift. Why not pair it with a set of colored pencils or watercolors? The girl (or woman) on your list will be thrilled to get it.

Single-column text of the New International Version (NIV)
Wide margins and high-quality paper for notes, journal entries or artwork

My Thoughts

Bible Art Journaling has become very popular these days. While it is beautiful and a great way to meditate on Scripture, it can also be intimidating for those that don't feel very artistic. I happen to be a painter but I still have days where I am just completely uninspired to do anything original.

The wonderful thing about the NIV Beautiful Word Bible is that it not only gives you space to be creative but it also already includes artwork that can inspire you to branch out and add your own artwork. Even if you aren't into art the single-column text and wide margins that are lightly lined make it easy to add notes beside the passage.

While the version that I have is a hardback there is also a leather-like edition that is beautiful. This Bible would make a wonderful gift for yourself or a friend.

My Thoughts

I've been enjoying Bible Art Journaling for awhile now and much to my delight my granddaughters have shown interest in doing it as well. The NIV Wonders of Creation Holy Bible is the perfect solution for introducing my younger grand girls to this form of worship.

This Bible has a ton of full-page art with Scripture just waiting to have color added. I feel like it is a great first step in encouraging my girls to meditate on a particular passage while they add their own personalization to the page. The only drawback to this particular Bible is that it doesn't have wide margins so you can't really do journaling on the pages. I do plan on showing them how to add some tip-ins so they can do art on passages that have deep meaning to them.

I am particularly excited about the presentation page. It has the usual to, from, and date sections but it also has beautiful butterflies just waiting to have color added. My plan is to color them in as a special memento from me to them.

This would make a wonderful gift for your favorite budding art enthusiast. Since the translation is the NIV it doesn't even have to be a child! May I also suggest the companion coloring book Wonders of Creation? Those two books and a pack of colored pencils (or markers, or gel pens) would be a really nice and encouraging present.

Inspiring Words - Inspirational Coloring Book from Zondervan {Giveaway}

30 Verses From The Bible You Can Color
Zondervan

INSPIRATION FOR EVERY AGE.
PERFECT FOR EVERY PEN.

Or marker, watercolor, or colored pencils.

Inside these pages, you'll find thirty unique and creative illustrations focusing on key verses from the Bible, each offering an opportunity to connect with Scripture while exploring your creativity. Throughout, NIV verses are paired with detailed line art, and each page is printed on high-quality, thick paper stock that won't bleed through.

Relax. Sit back. Meditate on God's Word. Then remove the completed page to display your work for even more daily inspiration.

My Thoughts

As an artist I have to say I am absolutely thrilled with the trend of meditating on Scripture through art. I particularly like the Inspiring Words inspirational coloring book because it allows you to not only express your creativity but also meditate and memorize Scripture.

There are thirty different verses. Some are well known and some are a bit more obscure, but all of them are worth pondering. The way the book is put together just begs for it to be taken apart. What I mean is that each of the prints are placed on only one side of the page leaving the back side blank. The pages are thick and do well with colored pencils, markers, watercolor, or my favorite, acrylic paint.

Each page is 8 1/2 x 11 inches so it is easy to frame. I used an 11 x 14 inch frame with an 8 x 10 mat and I love the way it looks. Now that I've tried it I plan on framing several more to place throughout the house. I love finding new ways to place Scripture in plain sight. For me it is an easy way to help me commit it to memory.

If you have a desire to experience the new Bible Art Journaling trend give this a shot. You don't have to have amazing talent. If you can color in the lines you can do this. It's such a peaceful and relaxing way to spend some quality time meditating on the Word.

Now . . . how about a GIVEAWAY?!! We loved the Inspiring Words Inspirational Coloring Book so much that we wanted to make a way for one of our readers to get their own copy. To do that we have partnered with Zondervan to give one of our readers a copy of the book.

The giveaway is open to U.S. residents and will run through midnight on Thursday, May 26, 2016. You must be at least 18 years old to enter. The winner will be contacted by email and will have forty-eight hours to claim the prize. If unclaimed, a new winner will be drawn. The winners’ entries will be verified. A Daring Sacrifice by Jody Hedlund {Teen Fiction Review}

An Uncertain Choice, #2
Teen Fiction

The only thing harder than
fighting for what's right . . . is fighting their
feelings for each other

For three years, the Cloaked Bandit has terrorized Wessex, robbing the nobility by knifepoint and a well-placed arrow. But little does anyone know, this bandit is in fact Juliana Wessex, the rightful ruler of the land and a girl her tyrannical uncle--the current Lord Wessex--believes was killed along with her father.

Juliana has become skilled at hiding from Lord Wessex in the forest, using her stolen goods to provide food and shelter to the peasants her uncle has taxed into poverty. But when she robs Collin Goodrich, her red hair betrays her true identity. Lord Collin remembers Juliana from their childhood--and challenges her to stay on his estate for a week in hopes she will leave her thieving ways and become a proper lady once more. Juliana is intrigued by Collin and his charms, but only time will tell if he can overcome her distaste of the nobility--as well as win her heart.

My Thoughts

I really love a good fairy tale. Such a nice escape from reality. But I have to say that I never really enjoyed the story of Robin Hood. The whole stealing from the rich to give to the poor just went against my ingrained two wrongs don't make a right.

Then along came  A Daring Scrifice by Jody Hedlund. It's a retelling of the Robin Hood story with several twists. I couldn't resist reading it because, well . . . Jody Hedlund! I'm so glad that I did. Jody used what I don't like about the original to bring about a tension that would ultimately lead to a crisis of conscious.

The story of Juliana Wessex is one of turning tragedy into triumph. She learns as we all must that our salvation isn't within ourselves, it comes from a higher source. The character of Lord Collin Goodrich is what we all want in a man--daring yet disciplined, loyal and devoted, brave and trustworthy. If his name seems familiar it is because you may have met him in An Uncertain Choice. (By the way, if you haven't read that one . . . treat yourself!) The tension between the two make a wonderful story of yearning for something that is seemingly in contrast to the duties they are bound to.

I would recommend this book for teen girls age thirteen and above. It has scenes of torture (it is set in medieval times) and it has two people falling in love and outward expressions of that. There's absolutely nothing scandalous but you may not want your ten-year-old avid reader consuming it. (That would have been me!) If you're on the fence about it I say read it for yourself. You'll probably love it like I did and that makes a nice treat for the momma!

In the back of the book there is a group of discussion questions. I'm thinking about using it for a mother/daughter read for my book club. Doesn't that sound like fun?!!

An October Bride (Year of Weddings Novella) by Katie Ganshert {eBook Review}

Year of Weddings Novella
Contemporary Fiction

What if the only way you could make your father’s last wish come true . . . was to marry the man of your dreams?

Emma Tate has just moved on from one fiancé, so when she announces a sudden engagement to her lifelong buddy Jake Sawyer, every busybody in Mayfair goes into high alert. Of course, no one but Jake and Emma know the real reason they’re getting married—so Emma’s dying father will have a chance to walk her down the aisle.

But while Jake and Emma move forward with their plan—and frantically plan an October wedding—it becomes clear that their agreement has a few complications . . . the biggest being their true feelings for each other.

With dubious friends, deliriously thrilled parents, and a town that won’t keep its nose out of their business, Emma and Jake will have a lot to contend with if they’re going to pull this off. The real question is: Who wants this wedding more, Emma’s dad . . . or Emma?

My Thoughts

After reading several of the novellas in this series I have to say that this one took me completely by surprise. Yes, it is a story about a wedding but it is also a story about an impending death. Emma Tate is heartbroken over her father's declining health and is desperate to do something for him.

By accident she stumbles upon her father's bucket list. As fate would have it there is one thing on the list that has not been checked off and that only she can make happen. Her father wishes to walk her down the aisle. Unfortunately she's broken up with her fiance and doesn't have another prospect in sight.

Enter long time family friend Jake Sawyer. Emma has had a crush on Jake for-ev-er! Jake and her brother are good friends so Emma is used to Jake being around. When Emma confesses her desire to Jake he volunteers to be the groom. The plan is to get married now while her father can still walk her down the aisle and sort out the details of the marriage later. It could be a recipe for disaster.

I loved, loved, loved this story from Katie Ganshert. Even with a serious underlying theme it is still a beautiful love story. Katie's author voice is witty and the thoughts that go through her character's heads are amusing. An October Bride is short and sweet but it definitely leaves you feeling like you read a complete story.

  • The complete text of the bestselling New International Version (NIV) of the Bible

My Thoughts

As we close in on the New Year I begin to think of new Bibles for my loved ones. I like to seek out a new Bible that will specifically target the person I am giving it to. One of the people on my list this year is a sweet girl that just entered the teenage years. The NIV Bible for Teen Girls has her name all over it!

The pictures of this book just don't do it justice. The cover is gorgeous. I love the doodly feel of it. Those little lovebirds appear in the graphics on the cover and throughout the book. The color palette is very appealing with a shabby chic feel.

While I like the visual look of this Bible, what really made me pick it up is the contents. With so many mixed messages for our girls this version is a wonderful encapsulation of what real girl power is. There are numerous character profiles of important women in the Bible along with daily readings from some popular authors like Bethany Hamilton, Annie Downs, and Christine Caine.

I think my absolute favorite thing is the pink highlights throughout that feature the promises of God in Scripture. Makes me want to do that same thing to my current Bible. When you flip the book open your eyes immediately go to that particular verse. Perfect uplift for everyone but especially fitting for teens in the midst of those turbulent years.

If you have a teen girl in your life I would highly recommend you get a copy of this particular Bible for her. It will show her that you love her but more importantly the words that this book contain will reveal to her just how much her heavenly Father loves her.

I have a secret confession to make. Any book with the name Sally Lloyd-Jones on it I want. I don’t even have to open it up to know that I want it. Her name on the cover is enough to make me put it in my cart. Why is that you ask? It’s because I can be assured that she is going to take the reader’s hand and draw them to Jesus.

For years now we have been enjoying her beautiful story books with all the littles in our lives. She teams up with a talented artist and the two of them create a masterpiece that brings the wonderful words and concepts of Scripture to life. If you’ve not enjoyed one of her books with your kids you are missing out.

In the back of my mind I have always thought it would be lovely to read an adult book written by her. She has such a gentle way with words that quietly brings the Gospel into your reading experience.  Well, my wish has somewhat come true. With the release of The Story Of God’s Love ForYou I can now unashamedly bask in the beautiful words that bring me into the presence of God.

The Story of God’sLove For You is the adult version of TheJesus Storybook Bible. The words are the same but it is packaged for an adult to read. There are forty-four short chapters that lead you through the beautiful love story of the Bible. This book is a must for all the worn out mommas out there!

It would be perfect for those moments when you just need to regroup. Think about where you go to escape the madness. Is it the bathroom, the laundry room, or even the car in the garage? Wherever it is keep a copy of this book there and when you think you are about to lose your marbles go there and read a chapter. You’ll be exposed to the flawed people that God chose to use to bring about His perfect plan. Every time I read a chapter it reminds me that none of us are perfect but God is and has a part designed just for you in the midst of the crazy day-to-day.

Maybe you're an empty-nester like me. I recently took it with us on a business trip and read it aloud to my husband as we were driving. I simply could not put it down! Not only did it make the trip go faster but we were blessed with the beautiful redeeming love story that God wrote just for us.

Now . . . how about a GIVEAWAY for a chance to get your hands on these lovely books for yourself? We loved both The Story of God's Love For You and The Jesus Storybook Bible so much that we wanted to make a way for THREE of our readers to get their own copies. To do that we have partnered with Zonderkidz to give THREE of our readers a copy of each book!

The giveaway is open to U.S. residents and will run through midnight on Thursday, October 22, 2015. You must be at least 18 years old to enter.
