My Thoughts

I am enamored with the FaithGirlz line. My oldest grand girl has just entered the target age group and it has been a delight to share the different books with her. I recently received the new NIV FaithGirlz Bible and we had a great time pouring over it and discussing what we liked about the different features.

It comes with a hard back cover that has a magnetic flap closure. I love the durability of a hard back Bible for younger kids. It is a bit heavier but the sturdiness and lay flat design make up for that. But what's fun about a durable Bible that doesn't have a cute design? I'm happy to say that this particular Bible has an adorable owl motif that is shiny and sparkly. What girl doesn't like a little shiny and sparkly in her life?

While the cover is cute it is what lies within that matters. My girl and I both liked the layout. Each book begins with a title page that introduces the book and gives an overview of what is contained. There is also a section written by Nancy Rue that helps relate that particular book of the Bible to your girl's life. Nancy has such a way of speaking truth to young girls and this particular element is a very nice touch.

We also liked many of the other features that made this Bible very interactive. The Bring It On! sections are scattered throughout and they ask a particular question with a multiple choice set of answers. On the opposite page is the second part of the Bring It On! portion. It says If you answered . . . (A., B., or C) then go to a particular Scripture reference. How's that for getting your girl to explore the Scriptures?

I am a list-maker box-checker by nature so the Bible reading plan in the back really appealed to me. It breaks the readings down into very manageable portions and then has a box to check when it is completed. It is designed to be done in a year but with the box check system your girl can do it at whatever pace they are comfortable with.

If you are looking for a way to stimulate interest in Scripture reading and study in your girl I would say that you can't go wrong with this particular Bible. It is appealing to the eye and will speak truth to her soul. What more could you ask for?

Mean Girl Makeover, Book 2
Nancy Rue
Juvenile Fiction (ages 9-12)

BULLYING DOESN'T END IN THE HALLWAY ANYMORE
WITH A SMARTPHONE OR TABLET
IT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE

From bestselling author Nancy Rue comes the story of Ginger Hollingberry, a new sixth grader at Gold Country Middle School. With greasy red hair, hand-me-down clothes, and a loud mouth, Ginger seems like she has a bullseye on her back for bullies like Kylie Steppe, who's had it out for Ginger since the first day of school. The student body of GCMS has just signed the Code, a strict anti-bullying pledge, except for one person--and, of course, it's Kylie. Since teachers and students are hyperaware of bullying thanks to the Code, Kylie and her gang of frenemies discover a new medium for taunts; social media. And now Ginger isn't safe from bullies anywhere.

Will the rumors spread about Ginger online ever stop? How can she show her face at school--or home--ever again?

My Thoughts

This was a difficult book to read . . . in a good way! You Can't Sit with Us is the second book in the Mean Girl Makeover series. This time we get to look at bullying from the perspective of the one being bullied. As a mom it just made me cringe. All the ugly behavior of middle school girls is splashed on the page and it is both heart-rending and anger inducing.

The first book in the series was So Not Okay and the story focused on the perspective of Tori who was a bystander to the bullying. This time around the focus shifts to Ginger who is the new girl and the bullying target of Kylie. I was struck by how my emotions shifted back and forth in this story. I found myself thinking, "Kylie, why do you have to be so mean? It just makes you so ugly." Then a bit later I would think, "Don't do it or say it Ginger! You know the outcome won't be good." And all along the way I just wanted one of the Tribelet to speak up. I felt like my shoulders were up around my ears just from the stress of it all.

Unfortunately the reason I had such a strong reaction to the story was because it is very real. Add the thought of it being your daughter that is being bullied is enough to make a momma come unglued! The really good thing about this whole series is that Nancy Rue uses the characters to teach very important lessons on bullying that can be applied to real life situations. As a mom I would highly recommend this whole series for moms and daughters to read and discuss together.

Do not what you want to do but what is right to do.

So Not Okay by Nancy Rue ~ A Juvenile Fiction Book Review and Giveaway

Mean Girl Makeover, Book 1
Nancy Rue
Juvenile Fiction

About the book:

WHEN IT COMES TO BULLIES,

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS NEUTRAL.

According to the Ambassadors 4 Kids Club, one out of every four students is bullied—and 85% of these situations never receive intervention. Parents, students, and teachers alike have amped up the discussion of how to solve the bullying problem for a networked generation of kids.

Written by bestselling author, Nancy Rue, each book in the Mean Girl Makeover trilogy focuses on a different character’s point of view: the bully, the victim, and the bystander. Each girl has a different personality so that every reader can find a character she relates to. The books, based on Scripture, show solid biblical solutions to the bullying problem set in a story for kids.

So Not Okay tells the story of Tori Taylor, a quiet sixth grader at Gold Country Middle School in Grass Valley, California. Tori knows to stay out of the way of Kylie, the queen bee of GCMS. When an awkward new student named Ginger becomes Kylie’s new target, Tori whispers a prayer of thanks that it’s not her. But as Kylie’s bullying of Ginger continues to build, Tori feels guilty and tries to be kind to Ginger. Pretty soon, the bullying line of fire directed toward Ginger starts deflecting onto Tori, who must decide if she and her friends can befriend Ginger and withstand Kylie’s taunts, or do nothing and resume their status quo. Tori’s decision dramatically changes her trajectory for the rest of the school year.

My thoughts:

If you are living and breathing then you've probably encountered bullying in some way. The time has come for us to begin to fight back against the mean girls!

Nancy Rue has written an amazing trilogy that addresses the topic of bullying in a unique way. Each of the three books will look at the topic of buyllying from a different perspective. The first book So Not Okay, centers around shy sixth grader Tori Taylor. Tori represents what it is like to be a bystander to bullying.

Tori is sweet and just wants to stay out of the limelight. She is no match for the overbearing Kylie. In fact she goes out of her way to avoid conflict with Kylie. When Ginger comes along and draws Kylie's fire, Tori is caught in a dilemma that too many of our girls face each day.

I have long been a fan of Nancy's writing, and I have to say this is some of her finest work. She does an amazing job of giving voice and emotion to this pervasive topic. Every tween or young teen girl should read this. Yes it is a work of fiction but I'm sure you will immediately see the powerful message of these fictional girls. The damage of bullying can be long lasting and we need to do whatever we can to put a stop to it.

The next two books in the series will address bullying from the perspectives of victim and bully. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the story. I hope you will join myself and others in declaring that bullying is #SoNotOkay!
