Teaching Toddlers: Begin At The Beginning {plus a GIVEAWAY}

We’ve all heard about the terrible twos. I’m here to tell you that it’s not the second year that will have you begging for mercy but rather years three and four. By then your little darlings will have developed the skills of a master manipulator with a killer smile to boot.

So what’s a worn out momma to do? Begin at the beginning.

For me during those turbulent years it meant running straight into the arms of Jesus. Every. Single. Day. The days I missed were the days I would sink. I love the popular advice of getting up before the kiddos to have a quiet time . . . a little bit of coffee and a whole lotta Jesus. (Cold can of Coke for me thank you very much!) The problem was that I was blessed with a boy that woke up with the first rays of light. And this night owl momma had usually gone to bed just a few hours before. Guilt was my cloak of choice. Why couldn’t I love early mornings? Why did I need an hour or so of just being before I could coherently function?

Here’s where I’m going to urge you to loosen those chains that hinder your morning meeting with Jesus. Do what you have to do to make it happen even if it is mid-morning rather than the crack of dawn. Just like you should put on your oxygen first in an airline emergency, you should also equip yourself first to face what is ahead of you. So put a DVD on, plop your little cherub in front of it and then run to Jesus. Grab your Bible and coffee and absorb His words of life-giving power.

After that mountain top experience you get the privilege of doing what you were called to do . . . train up a child!

So where should you start? Begin at the beginning.

The wonderful thing about toddlers is their insatiable curiosity. The most taxing part of a toddler is their insatiable curiosity. (And the tantrums . . . oh the tantrums!) Toddlers love to discover how things are made and how they work. Encourage that curiosity by teaching them the creation story in Genesis.

There are literally thousands of resources of books and music and coloring sheets that you can use to teach your little one what happened on those first seven days. Make it fun and enjoyable for both of you. I happen to be a brand ambassador for Zonderkidz so I have had the privilege of scouring a ton of their toddler books. One of my favorite new books is the Read With Me Bible for Little Ones. It does a nice overview of some of the main themes in the Bible.

Once you’ve conquered the creation story you can move on to many other stories that reside in the Old and New Testaments. My favorite teaching outline comes from Hebrews 11:1-39. We affectionately refer to it as the great Hall of Faith. Spend time teaching your children about each of these great men and women. It is perfectly acceptable to leave out the gruesome parts at this point. A three-year-old is probably not ready to learn about Cain killing his brother Able. But they can begin to learn about obedience to God by presenting acceptable offerings. And above all else begin teaching them about Jesus.

I’m so excited for each of you mommas as you journey this path with your little ones. You are called to this and our faithful God is equipping you for it. You can do this. There’s a great cloud of witnesses surrounding you and cheering you on. And all the grannies said . . . AMEN!

Now . . . how about a GIVEAWAY?!! We loved Read With Me Bible For Little Ones so much that we wanted to make a way for one of our readers to get their own copy. To do that we have partnered with Zonderkidz to give one of our readers a copy of the book.

The giveaway is open to U.S. residents and will run through midnight on Tuesday, May 10, 2016. You must be at least 18 years old to enter. The winner will be contacted by email and will have forty-eight hours to claim the prize. If unclaimed, a new winner will be drawn. The winners’ entries will be verified. Stroller Review for Maclaren Volo @MaclarenNA

About Maclaren:

It all began in 1965 when Owen Maclaren designed and patented his prototype Baby Buggy -- the B-01. The iconic blue and white stripes and aluminium frame imparts a vintage style that is popular and modern today. The revolutionary lightweight, 3D fold design continues to be an important and timeless prototype for the industry.

A former test pilot and aeronautical designer Owen Maclaren, created the iconic B01 buggy in the converted stables of his restored medieval farmhouse, Arnold House, in the village of Barby, Northamptonshire in England in 1967.

Based on Maclaren's knowledge as a retired aeronautical engineer and grandfather, the buggy had to be durable, safe, and lightweight. With a combination of modern materials like tubular aluminium, a durable structure that comfortably carries even a fairly large child, and 3D folding mechanism, the buggy weighed just 3kg/6lbs and fit into the same amount of space as an umbrella. The revolutionary design liberated parents from the bulky pram and quickly became an object of design and desire.

Today’s Maclaren Buggys are descendants of the B-01 – from the lightweight frame, durable fabric, and one-hand fold -- to the above-industry standard safety features and innovative style.

My thoughts:

If you are looking for a lightweight stroller then the Maclaren Volo is for you.  This small stroller is king of umbrella strollers.  It is particularly for you if you are looking for a lightweight stroller for your older toddler. (Holds up to 55lbs.)In fact Little M my 3 and ½ year old thinks the Volo is “super-fast like a race car.”

Little M love to sit in this stroller. He can easily hop in and out of it and it sits upright enough so he can see well. I love that this lightweight stroller comes with a nice size hood. Little M has fair skin and can burn easily when we are out and about so it’s nice that he can stay out of the sun.

I really like to use this stroller for when I am at the outlet malls. I put my five month old in a carrier and can easily push the Volo around with one hand.

I love the curve of the handles and the carrying strap is a lovely feature as well. The basket is nice sized for my short trips and I can fit a medium size bag in it. I love the breathable mesh on the sides of the stroller making it perfect for hot summer days.

One thing I dislike is that you cannot hang bags off this stroller because a soon as the child hops out it will tip backwards. With that said it is a lightweight umbrella stroller and most if not all tip backwards.  I would also like it to come with a cup holder. You can buy one sepereatly.

Overall, I find this lightweight stroller to be right in line with what it claims. It is lightweight, easy fold, and carry. It has a nice size basket and a good hood.  My older child loves to sit in it and cannot get the five point harness unbuckled.

This stroller is high quality and will last longer than your typical umbrella stroller.  If you look at other brands you will find that a lot of their lightweight strollers are identical to Maclaren. After using this stroller I think it is safe to say that Maclaren is a leader in lightweight strollers.

Review and #Giveaway for Balboa Adjustable Sling @BalboaBaby

About Balboa Baby:

A Legacy of Design Excellence
Shirley Pepys, founder of Noel Joanna Inc. (NoJo) and her son Noel Pepys have teamed up with Dr. William Sears, best known as “America’s Pediatrician,” to create fashionable and functional products to make life simpler for parents and better for babies. Balboa Baby® designs contemporary, unique products using luxurious fabrics and distinctive prints. We will continue to find innovative ways to make parents’ lives easier, their babies happier and to give them both opportunities to bond and experience life together. Cuddle your baby.

My thoughts:

I came across Balboa Baby through the Ask Dr. Sears Facebook page.  I grew up with my mom using Dr. Sears. Then when I had children I also followed his books and advice. In his books he talks about investing in a good sling and before I came across Balbo Baby I had not seen a sling like the one he recommended.

I was thrilled when I was able to review the Balboa Adjustable Sling. I love it and use it daily. I keep it in my diaper bag and then just pull it out when I need it. What make the Balboa Sling stand out is the padded should strap. I love this since Little H is 17lbs he can get heavy.

The fabric is soft and the print is gorgeous. I have no cons to this adjustable sling. It is easy to put on and go and it can be adjusted quickly as well. The safety stopper is a feature I wish all slings came with.

You can also take the sling off and lay baby down without waking baby up! My two travel essentials are a stroller and this sling! I love it and I am sure whoever wins one will love it too!

Tommee Tippee Sippy Cups

Our thoughts:
We received the Tommee Tippee Explora Sippy cups for review. I am always excited to try new Sippy cups. I want a Sippy cup that is easy to clean and does not spill. Before trying Tommee Tippe our favorite was Playtex Insulator . I was pretty satisfied with Playtex but it has two problems it is hard to get mold out of the stopper and the plastic stopper breaks down which then leads to the Sippy cup  leaking.

We have had the Explora Sippy cups for several weeks and I have to say that the design is well thought out and still simple to use. The stopper is made with hard plastic and silicone. To clean you can snap them apart to get the mold out and then snap them back together. The hard plastic keeps the stopper from breaking down and becoming lose. I am thrilled to have found Tommee Tippee Sippy cups and look forward to seeing what their other products offer.
