Book Review ~ A Perfect Word for Every Occasion by Liz Duckworth

Christian Living/Self Help

Back of the book:

Have you ever wondered just what to say at a funeral, to a friend whose spouse is fighting cancer, or to someone going through a breakup?

The right words don’t always come easily. Sometimes we’re so afraid to say the wrong thing that we say nothing at all or resort to clichés. But with a little help you can share the perfect message that will draw you nearer to friends and loved ones.

This book offers examples and guidelines for things to say, lines to write, and Scripture verses to share. Full of encouraging messages organized by category—sympathy, thank-yous, congratulations, etc.—it will help you save time while strengthening your relationships. You will find the right words for formats old and new: Facebook messages, emails, cards, texting, receiving lines, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, funerals, and more. You’ll even discover what not to say.

A Perfect Word for Every Occasion is a trustworthy recourse for words to bless the ones you love.

About the author:

Liz Duckworth is the author of critically acclaimed books such as Wildflower Living and Ragtail Remembers. With almost twenty years of experience in the Christian publishing field, Liz heads up Liz Duckworth Publishing Services. She lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with her husband and two sons.

My thoughts:

If you are a word nerd like me, I may have found the perfect book for you. We have probably all had the privilege of receiving thoughtful kind words from someone. Unfortunately we have probably also received words that were abrasive or at least insensitive. In fact I’m pretty sure I have imparted both kinds myself.

Liz has put together a small but powerful book that will help anyone with choosing the appropriate thing to say. Of course there are tons of books out there that provide a similar service. The difference in this book is the unique content.

Let me give you an example. We live in a facebook world. We've all had friends that have shared something that really required a response. Hitting the like button when the person has said that their favorite aunt Sally has died doesn't quite cut it. It can also seem insensitive to say something like, “The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away”.

There are simple examples such as, “I’m sorry for your loss. We’ll miss her.”  There are quotes from famous people. And there are beautiful scripture suggestions that go beyond the overused/abused ones. There are even suggestions on what to say when someone’s favorite pet has died . . . I kid you not! One of my favorite sections is Aunt Me-me’s Guide to What Not to Say, because we've all heard the typical “She’s in a better place” response.

I am definitely going to have to purchase some additional copies of this book. I want to give it to several of my word loving friends, but there is no way I’m letting this one out of my hands. Get yourself a copy . . . it will make you sound better in person, in a card, and definitely in cyberspace!

Book Review ~ Double Blind by Brandilyn Collins @Brandilyn

Fiction/Christian/Suspense

Back of the book:

Desperate people make desperate choices.

Twenty-nine-year-old Lisa Newberry can barely make it through the day. Suddenly widowed and the survivor of a near-fatal attack, she is wracked with grief and despair. The she hears of a medical trial for a tiny brain chip that emits electrical pulses to heal severe depression. At rope’s end Lisa offers herself as a candidate.

When she receives her letter of acceptance for the trial, Lisa is at first hopeful. But . . . brain surgery. Can she really go through with that? What if she receives only the placebo?

What if something far worse goes wrong?

Written in the relentless style for which Brandilyn Collins is known, Double Blind is a psychological thriller with mind-bending twists. Lisa faces choices that drive her to the brink, and one wrong move could cost the lives of many.

About the author:

Twitter: @Brandilyn

Brandilyn Collins is a best-selling novelist known for her trademark Seatbelt Suspense®. She is a three-time American Christian Fiction Writers Book of the Year Award winner and has also received Inspirational Readers’ Choice and Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice honors. The Writer magazine named her nonfiction release, Getting into Character, among 2002’s best books on writing. Brandilyn and her family have homes in California and Idaho.

My thoughts:

Do you have a suspense lover on your Christmas list? Double Blind would be the perfect gift for them! Brandilyn once again writes an intriguing story about an ailment that strikes many. There is a deliciously sinister element that turns this from an average read to a heart pumping adventure.

Lisa Newberry has been through her share of overwhelming tragedies. She now suffers from a very debilitating case of depression. It seems that no matter what she does, she just can’t seem to shake it. An experimental surgery to implant a brain chip seems to hold the answer.

At first it appears to be the miracle cure, but then she begins to have strange visions. Of course since it is a Brandilyn Collins novel, these visions are about a violent murder. The twists and turns in this story are mind blowing.

These visions at first seemed a little “woo woo” out there for my tastes. I’ve been a Collins fan for some time so I should have known better. The conclusion brought it all together and made perfect sense. The best part of course was that I was on the edge of my seat right up to the end! (Don’t you hate it when you figure out a suspense book early on?) If you like to be creeped out but at the same time reminded that God is sovereign over every situation . . . pick up a copy of this book and enjoy!

Book Review ~ Sugar Fork by Walt Larimore,M.D.

Historical Fiction

Back of the book:

This captivating story takes place in the Sugar Fork Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains wilderness during 1925-1926. Nate Randolph and his five unique daughters wrestle to survive after the death of Callie (his wife and their mother) as well as to maintain their farm, forests, family, and faith against an evil lumber company manager seeking to clear-cut their virgin woodland.

A cast of delightful characters, including gypsy siblings, Cherokee Indians, a granny midwife, a world-famous writer, and even a flesh-and blood Haint, join our heroine, sixteen-year-old Abbie Randolph, in her life-and-death struggle. Abbie falls in love for the first time, helps run the farm, and mothers her independent sisters while battling to preserve her faith when senseless murders threaten to destroy her family and way of life.

Will the Randolph family survive intact? Will the farm be saved? Only a miracle could make it happen.

With the march of the industrial age, especially industrial lumbering, the roaring twenties, Prohibition, the increasing momentum for a national park, and the onslaught of a modern world, trains and radio communication, the traditional life and ways of our Southern Highlanders were about to change forever.

About the author:
Website: www.DrWalt.com

Walt Larimore. MD, is one of America's best-known family physicians and had been listed in the Best Doctors in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, the International Health Professionals of the Year, and Who's Who in America. His MD degree is from Louisiana State University and his Family Medicine residency was at Duke.

As an author, Dr. Larimore has written, co-written, or edited nearly thirty books, most of which are still in print, and several of which are best-sellers. He's authored four novels and garnered three Gold Medallion Book Award nominations, a Christianity Today Book of the Year Award, and a Retailers' Choice Book Award.

Dr. Larimore has also published over 600 articles in dozens of medical, lay, and Internet publications and he currently writes a bi-monthly column for "Significant Living" magazine.

Dr. Larimore practiced 4 years in the Smoky Mountains before moving to Central Florida to practice for 16 years. From 1993-1994 he served as the President of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians. In 1996, he was named America's Outstanding Family Medicine Educator by the American Academy of Family Physicians. In 2000, Dr. and Mrs. Larimore were named Educators of the Year by the Christian Medical Association.

In 2001 the Larimores relocated to Colorado where Dr. Larimore is now an author, educator, and medical journalist. He serves on the adjunct family medicine faculty of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and the In His Image Family Medicine Residency in Tulsa, Oklahoma and as Medical Director for the Mission Medical Clinic in Colorado Springs.

From 1996 to 2001, Dr. Larimore hosted over 850 episodes of the daily, live Ask the Family Doctor show on Fox's Health Network--being awarded the prestigious "Gracie" Award by the American Women in Radio and Television. From 2002 to 2004, Dr. Larimore hosted the Focus on Your Family's Health's syndicated radio and TV features.

Dr. Larimore is a frequent guest about family health topics on a wide variety of television and radio programs and has appeared on The Today Show, CBS's Morning Show, several Fox News programs and CNN.

My thoughts:

I fell in love with this area of the Smoky Mountains in Dr. Larimore’s Bryson City novels. Now Dr. Larimore brings us back to the region and back in time. Sugar Fork is technically the sequel to Hazel Creek.  I read them out of order and did fine. However, if you have the chance I’d read them in order. It just fleshes the story out nicely.

I enjoy Dr. Larimore’s writing style. He has a gentle way of making you feel like you are an observer of the scene playing out before you. I could feel the chill of the mountain cabin and experience the heavy morning mountain air. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a gentle put you to sleep type of book. There is plenty of tension and suspense along with humor and a bit of romance.

In our modern life it is hard to imagine what Abbie and her family went through on a daily basis just to survive. Dealing with the elements took all of her strength then to add in some nefarious characters was really more than a normal person could bear. But Abbie isn’t a normal person. She’s a strong woman determined to not only see her family survive during these current conditions, but to thrive under them.

Grab yourself a hot cup of tea and snuggle up with this book. It will transport you back in time to the beginning of the industrial age in our nation and to an absolutely breathtaking section of our beautiful country.

Review ~ Nuby iMonster™ Snack Keeper @NubyUSA

12+ Months

No more messy snacks! Our unique Snack Keeper™ cup keeps kid-sized snacks inside the container instead of on the floor or car seat. The soft silicone flaps make it easy to grab snacks without spilling. Nûby™ feeding accessories are made to withstand the challenges of daily use and retain their bright color.
Colors may vary

My thoughts:

As a mother I am constantly on the lookout for products that make my life a little easier. Now let me enlighten you with the newest product that has made life with kiddos easier, that being the iMonster™ Snack Keeper!

First I have to let you know that I use the iMonster™ Snack Keeper mostly with my four year old. The reason being it is actually a good kid size and can fit his snacks in it unlike other snack keepers which are more geared towards baby snacks.

My favorite way to use the iMonster™ Snack Keeper is in the car. Little M loves to have a snack when going places and I like that it keeps him occupied. I hate when he eats in the car it ends up all over the floor of our van but with the iMonster™ Snack Keeper his snack is contained making my life a little easier!

I also like taking the iMonster™ Snack Keeper to the grocery store so if it falls I just pick it up and no mess. I would recommend the iMonster™ Snack Keeper for older toddlers since it will fit their snacks and it looks cool! The iMonster™ Snack Keeper retails for only $5.00  making it a great stocking stuffer!

You can purchase the iMonster™ Snack Keeper at Buy Baby Direct!

Mommy Rambles ~ How to avoid becoming the Grinch!

It’s been awhile since my last ramble post so I thought I would sneak one in while baby is napping and the older one is “cleaning” his room.

I have been quite the grumpy lately for a number of reasons.

1)      The Christmas season. I have never been a big spender or a big time gift giver. So I get burnt out on all the buy a hundred gifts for everyone you know. This is why I prefer Thanksgiving because there are no gifts involved and you just spend time with family and friends.  However I am BIG on advent and it keeps me from becoming a Grinch.  I love the daily activities of advent and I love counting down the days till our Saviors birth.

2)      Not enough time. Having two small kids is a full time job in itself then add in homeschooling, blogging, cleaning the house and holiday extras and I just feel like there is not enough time. I end up having to sacrifice something and lately I have chosen my blog since I will never get this time back with my two small kiddos.

3)      Gallbladder problems. I have been having a stomach ache for a while now and couldn't figure it out. Then one night after eating sugar cookies and a glass of milk I was in pain and up ALL night. The next day at church wasn't any better. My father has suffered from gallbladder problems so I gave him a call and described my pain and sure enough gallbladder problems! This is a big deal for a foodie like me. I love real butter, sausage, baked goods, etc.  With gallbladder problems you must have a low fat diet. So with it being the holidays I am super bummed about missing out on all those good baked goods.  However gallbladder pain is no joke so no cheating for me!

With all these things on my mind I have to daily change my way of thinking. I don’t want to become a Grinch and most of all I want memories for my kids to look back on. I want my kids to know that Jesus is the ONLY reason for Christmas.

I can’t be super mom and do it all this Christmas season and that is the reason for this ramble post. I may be more absent from my blog and online but please know I will be around when time allows but my kids take top priority! Merry Christmas!!!
Best,
RambleSAHM

Book Review ~ Resurrect by David E. Stevens

Resurrect

David E. Stevens

Resurrect Trilogy, Book 1

Action Thriller

Back of the book:

Book 1 in the Resurrect Trilogy.

Preventing his burning fighter from crashing into a neighborhood, Navy Commander Josh Logan ejects ... late. Critically injured, he’s offered a new life and mission exploiting highly classified military technology to stop a global cataclysm. The price? He’ll be dead to everyone he knows.

A year later, he wakes in a city hospital with altered appearance and enhanced abilities. Guided by nothing but a voice, he must infiltrate the military-industrial complex, recruit a team and develop the world’s most powerful weapon –to protect humanity. The more he learns, the more he questions who, or what, is behind his resurrection, as the clock counts down to the end of the world.

About the author:

A Navy fighter pilot with hundreds of aircraft carrier landings, Commander David E Stevens holds degrees from Cornell and the University of Michigan with graduate work in astrophysics. He test piloted new fighters and received an aviation patent. With a Top Secret clearance, Dave served as Strike Operations Officer for the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm and led classified defense programs. He's traveled to over two dozen countries.

My thoughts:

Let me begin with a bit of advice . . . do not begin this book right before bed! You will pay for it the next day. To say that this is a fast paced story is a bit of an understatement. It is written in quickly changing segments that just draw you from one to the next. You’ll find yourself saying, “I’ve just got to know what happens next.” Then before you know it you’ve read half the book and dawn is breaking.

The author is a former military pilot and it reflects in his writing style. I thought he did a great job describing things accurately without going above the heads of the average person. Even though I don’t have a background as a pilot nor do I claim to understand quantum physics, I was able to follow the storyline easily and enjoy the read along the way.

This really is a great book for anyone that loves a good action packed thriller. I do have a small caution to impart. This book is considered to be a work of Christian fiction. I think I would classify it more as a fiction book with a bit of a Christian slant. There is a bit of language that I didn’t particularly find offensive, but I have friends that I know who would be put off by it. My advice would be to read it for yourself before you pass it along.

Overall I was pleased with the book and I’m looking forward to the remaining two books in the trilogy. Write fast Commander Stevens!
