The Lady's Mine by Francine Rivers | Historical Romance Review

The Lady's Mine by Francine Rivers

Historical Romance

1875. When Kathryn Walsh arrives in tiny Calvada, a mining town nestled in the Sierra Nevadas, falling in love is the farthest thing from her mind. Banished from Boston by her wealthy stepfather, she has come to claim an inheritance from the uncle she never knew: a defunct newspaper office on a main street overflowing with brothels and saloons, and a seemingly worthless mine. Moved by the oppression of the local miners and their families, Kathryn decides to relaunch her uncle’s newspaper―and then finds herself in the middle of a maelstrom, pitted against Calvada’s most powerful men. But Kathryn intends to continue to say―and publish―whatever she pleases, especially when she knows she’s right.

Matthias Beck, owner of a local saloon and hotel, has a special interest in the new lady in town. He instantly recognizes C. T. Walsh’s same tenacity in the beautiful and outspoken redhead―and knows all too well how dangerous that family trait can be. While Kathryn may be right about Calvada’s problems, her righteousness could also get her killed. But when the handsome hotelier keeps finding himself on the same side of the issues as the opinionated Miss Walsh, Matthias’s restless search for purpose becomes all about answering the call of his heart.

My Thoughts

I was so excited when Francine River's newest book came out. I put it on my Kindle as soon as possible. But I found myself putting off reading it. While I have loved each and every book that she has written they usually contain serious and even heavy emotional material.

I don't know about you, but at our house it's been a long two years and I just wasn't in the frame of mind to read something heavy. Then one day I read a blog post by Francine Rivers about The Lady's Mine In the post she talks about all of us coming out of a heavy season and her desire to write something lighter that we could all find enjoyment in.

With that information I decided to take a chance and give it a read. I'm so glad I did. It was a delightful story about a rugged man and a feisty woman who find themselves at odds about most things but also drawn together about the important things. The title is a clever double meaning and it was just the escape that I needed. If you enjoy a good historical romance give this one a shot.

Nonfiction / Christmas

There is no better way to get into the full spirit of the holiday season than by coloring more than 85 uplifting illustrations in this special volume: frosty winter scenes, carolers in the snow, trees trimmed in nostalgic trappings, ornate churches, angels, nativities--all reminiscent of cozy moments with family and friends and the sweetest, simplest blessings of the holidays. Each artist can rejoice with a grateful heart and be reminded of the ultimate gift God gave the world. Also included are illustrated Scripture verses and fun, holiday craft cutouts that everyone can use to create their own ornaments, Christmas cards, gift tags, and more!

Inside of A Very Blessed Christmas Coloring Book.

My Thoughts

The coloring trend is such a relaxing way to spend time gathering your thoughts and being creative. A Very Blessed Christmas Coloring Book captures all the sentiments of the season and allows you to express the joyous feelings that surround our celebration of the birth of Christ.

The pages are sturdy and seem to hold up well even though the designs are printed on both sides of the paper. I mostly used colored pencils because it is my favorite choice for coloring books but I think with a little prep (use something like clear gesso) you could even paint the designs.

I liked that the designs were a mix of very complex patterns and also larger more simple designs. This made the book enjoyable for myself as well as some younger members of the family. Another really fun element of the book is the crafting section at the back. There are several pages that are designed to be colored, glittered, and whatever else you would like to do, and then cut out and made into ornaments or bookmarks. Such a nice way to get the whole family involved.

This would make a wonderful gift for the artist on your list. By itself it is a simple gift or stocking stuffer, but if you add a set of colored pencils it could easily be a complete gift. We enjoyed spending time with it in our family and I think others will as well.

Finding Father Christmas & Engaging Father Christmas by Robin Jones Gunn | Christmas Fiction Review

Finding Father Christmas & Engaging Father Christmas by Robin Jones Gunn

Book review disclosure.

Father Christmas series #1 & #2
Contemporary Fiction / Christmas

This Christmas, settle into a cozy chair by the fire and prepare
to be swept away to England in two unforgettable novels by
bestselling author Robin Jones Gunn . . .

In FINDING FATHER CHRISTMAS, Miranda Carson's search for the father she never knew leads her to England where she's welcomed into his family as a stranger to them. She quickly grows to love them but wonders if revealing the truth about her father will threaten the bonds they've built. One thing is certain: This Christmas will change the future for both her and the family forever.

In ENGAGING FATHER CHRISTMAS, Miranda Carson spends an English Christmas with her boyfriend, Ian, expecting that she'll soon find herself engaged and the charming village of Carlton Heath will be her forever home. But as word of Miranda's true identity spreads beyond the family, all her relationships are soon threatened. Will Father Christmas have a redeeming gift in store for them all?

My Thoughts

I originally read Finding Father Christmas and Engaging Father Christmas in 2007 and 2008 when the books first came out. I fell in love with the beautiful story of a lonely young woman searching for her father. The stories were engaging and endearing but beyond that they were filled with the true meaning of Christmas.

This year the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel put out a film version of Finding Father Christmas. It was a combining of the two novels. There was nothing wrong with the movie, in fact it was a fun Christmas themed movie full of romance. Unfortunately it just didn't give me the same feeling that I had when I had first read the books. So I decided to re-read them.

Oh my friends, you must treat yourself to reading these stories. Finding Father Christmas is so moving it brought me to tears at times. The story has the framework of Dicken's A Christmas Carol. Miranda is on a quest to find out who her father is. Not only does she find her father, she also finds the Father.

Engaging Father Christmas continues the story of Miranda and her newly found family. It takes place a year later and even though there is a lot of happiness, due to Miranda's relationship with Ian, there is also a lot of tension because of who Miranda is. I loved this novel just as much as the first. In this story we see the power of redemption and the healing that it can bring.

I'm excited because there is a third book in the series, Kissing Father Christmas. I am just getting started on it so stay tuned for my reaction. If the first few chapters are a hint . . . it's going to be good!

Giddy Up, Eunice: Because Women Need Each Other by Sophie Hudson | Women's Issues Review

Giddy Up, Eunice: Because Women Need Each Other by Sophie Hudson

Book review disclosure.

Nonfiction / Christian Life / Women's Issues

Saddle up, sister.
This is going to be fun.

It's easy for women to focus on what seems to separate us: differences in age, parenting styles, career goals, or maybe even core beliefs about whether leggings can adequately serve as pants (the struggle is real, y'all.) The reality, though, is that we have far more in common than we realize, and since Scripture shows us the blessing of friendships across generations, it's high time we step out of our same-age, same-stage silos. Life is so much better that way.

Sophie Hudson, in the delightfully quirky Southern style her readers have come to know and love, sends out a rallying cry for women everywhere to open our eyes and see the people God has put in our lives--whether they're behind us, beside us, or in front of us. It is such a gift to love one another, walk with one another, and soak up the blessings that flow across all generations.

My Thoughts

If you've never had the pleasure of reading a book by Sophie Hudson just go ahead and start with this one. I promise you'll be hooked. Sophie's humor is so quirky but her heart goes deep. I want to move in next door and soak up all that is Sophie. We're of a similar age but her delight in all things pop culture just goes over my head. I'm a book nerd extraordinaire. Even with all of our differences I have a strong feeling that we would get along wonderfully. And that's just what this book is all about. Women together.

Sophie takes a look at cross-generational female relationships through the familiar Bible stories of Elizabeth and Mary, Ruth and Naomi, and finally Lois and Eunice (and Timothy). The first section on Elizabeth and Mary was eye-opening in a new way to me. Before reading this book I had always considered Elizabeth more of a mentor-type to Mary. But if you think about it they are really more contemporaries in many ways even with a likely fifty year age gap. Neither had ever been pregnant let alone given birth plus they both became pregnant in unusual circumstances. Eye-opening my friends!

My new perspective continued with Ruth and Naomi. Again I have always looked at Naomi as Ruth's valued mentor. But when you step back and take a good look at the story you realize that they also are in the same boat. Both are widows that have virtually lost everything. Neither has any children to take care of them so the bravery to go forth comes from leaning on each other.

Then there is Lois, Eunice, and Timothy. I must admit that up until this section most of Sophie's anecdotes about her family made me laugh. But by the end of this section I was sobbing. At my age this section hit pretty close to home. I don't want to say too much about it but would rather let you read it with fresh eyes and perspective. I will tell you that Sophie is right, it ain't over till it's over, so we as women need to stay in it. We must open our eyes to those around us and dive in and be blessed probably more than the one that we are ministering to.

Christmas: A Gift for Every Heart by Charles F. Stanley {Christmas Book Review}

Christian Life / Christmas

What does Christmas mean to you?

Is it the sights, the sounds, the smells of the season? Is it the perfectly wrapped packages or the red and gold trimmed trees?

Or is it the Savior?

In the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it's so easy to become distracted by all the trimmings and the trappings. We are relentless in our quest for the ultimate present, recipe, or party--so much so that we can overlook the greatest and most perfect gift ever given: the Son of God.

In his first Christmas book, beloved pastor Dr. Charles Stanley takes us back to the true reason for celebration--the birth of Christ. By revisiting the people and events of that first Christmas, Dr. Stanley reveals the unique lessons and hope that night offers to each of us today. Such timeless truths as:
  • True peace and joy are found only in Christ, not in the things of this world.
  • Christmas itself is undeniable evidence that God always keeps His promises.
  • The Lord God not only lives and reigns, but He is intimately involved in every circumstance of our lives.
  • And the perfect gift for us to give Jesus is offering Him our hearts.
Filled with Scripture, insights, and Dr. Stanley's own personal thoughts and memories, Christmas: A Gift for Every Heart is a treasure you'll want to open again and again.

My Thoughts

It's hard to believe that Christmas: A Gift for Every Heart is Dr. Stanley's first Christmas book. He's such a talented and prolific author that I would have thought that he would have penned something on the subject sooner. But let me just say that this book was worth the wait.

Dr. Stanley not only talks about the true meaning of the Christmas season where the Christ child is born, but he also explores the complexities of the season to us. While many celebrate the holidays with joy and anticipation, others look to the holidays with sadness and disappointment. Whatever category you find yourself in this book will speak to you.

Each of the eight chapters build upon the others. It begins with Dr. Stanley talking about how God is with you no matter where you find yourself. He then goes on to explain that God is your redeemer and the One who brings peace to the chaos of your life. When you find yourself in impossible situations God is the one that is the Savior. He alone is Sovereign over all. Then he wraps up the book with ways that you can not only express your gratitude to your Savior but also share that love with others.

As to the look of this book . . . it is stunning. It is much smaller than a coffee table book but  that is the essence of the photography in it. I would love to put some of the photos on my walls. Of course I couldn't stand to cut it apart so I'll be satisfied with it on display on my coffee table.

If you are like me and love to give books as gifts this would be a perfect one this Christmas season. Whether you have a friend or family member that is hurting or rejoicing this Christmas you can't go wrong with giving them this beautiful and touching book.

Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good by Jan Karon ~ A Mitford Series Review and Giveaway

The Mitford Series, Book 10
Contemporary Fiction

About the book:

After five hectic years of retirement from Lord's Chapel, Father Tim Kavanagh returns with his wife, Cynthia, from a so-called pleasure trip to the land of his Irish ancestors.

While he is glad to be at home in Mitford, something is definitely missing: a pulpit. But when he's offered one, he decides he doesn't want it. Maybe he's lost his passion.

His adopted son, Dooley, wrestles with his own passion--for the beautiful and gifted Lace Turner--and his vision to become a successful country vet. Dooley's brother Sammy, still enraged by his mother's abandonment, destroys one of Father Tim's prized possessions. And Hope Murphy, owner of Happy Endings Bookstore, struggles with the potential loss of her unborn child and her hard-won business.

All this, as Wanda's Feel Good Cafe opens, a romance catches fire through an Internet word game, Mitford's former mayor hatches a reelection campaign to throw the bums out, and the weekly Muse poses a probing inquiry:

Does Mitford still take care of its own?

Millions of fans will applaud the chance to spend time, once more, in the often comic and utterly human presence of Jan Karon's characters. Indeed they have never been more sympathetic, big-hearted, and engaging.

READ AN EXCERPT

My thoughts:

It has been three long years of waiting and wondering about what Father Tim and the other residents of Mitford have been up to. But the suspense is finally over. With the publication of Somewhere Safe With Somebody Good we finally have our passport into the lovely town that we would all like to call home.

I was reading the book a few days ago while I was in a waiting room. The person next to me made a comment about the thickness of the book and asked what it was about. After taking a second to gather my thoughts I said that it was a novel about the beautiful ebb and flow of everyday life in a small town.

What I left out was that it is a story of ordinary people who draw strength from each other. Of course life in a tiny community can be just as irritating as it is soothing. Anyone who has ever lived in a small town can attest to that fact. But for me I'd love to live in Mitford. Wouldn't it be fun to have lunch with JC, Mule and Father Tim? Maybe become an honorary member of the Turkey Club! I couldn't wait to get my copy of the Mitford Muse. Such a quaint weekly paper, unless the story is about you and the facts aren't quite right.

Of the ten books in this series so far, this is my favorite. Father Tim is no longer a priest at Lord's Chapel, but that doesn't mean his calling to minister has been taken away. In fact I would say that by retiring from the parish he expanded his flock instead of decreased it. This is one of those perfect books that makes you tear up and then laugh. It makes you roll your eyes and then a few pages later you'll be sighing with contentment.

I can hardly wait for you to read the portion that the title comes from . . . truly beautiful. But my absolute favorite saying from this book is "Love is an act of endless forgiveness." And that my friend is what we should all be about.

So put your feet up, snuggle in and journey back to the lovely town of Mitford. Where you will be inspired to live your life loving others because of the One who loved us first.

Book Review ~ The One Year My Princess Devotions by Karen Whiting

Karen Whiting
Juvenile Nonfiction/Devotion & Prayer

Back of the book:

Little girls love to pretend they are princesses. Now they don't have to pretend any longer.

The One Year My Princess Devotions: Preschool Edition will teach girls that they are truly daughters of the almighty King. They will also learn how much God loves them and what God expects from his children.

Each devotion includes a short scripture (Royal Words), and special message (Royal Thoughts), a prayer for the Kind, and an activity related to the devotion's theme (Princess in Action).

Your little princess will want to read about her King each day and learn how to live like royalty throughout her life.

My thoughts:

In my opinion it is never too early to begin teaching your children to study God's Word. The One Year My Princess Devotions: Preschool Edition is the perfect way to begin that habit with your sweet little girl.

Each day's reading is short and sweet so as not to lose the attention of your little one. The scripture selection (Royal Words) is simple enough that your little girl can easily repeat it after you. The Princess Thoughts section is written in an easily understood description so as to help you apply what the scripture means. The prayer suggestion (A Prayer for the King) can again be easily repeated by your girl.

The daily devotions are designed to be done during the morning or afternoon so that your little princess can complete the task assigned for the day (Princess in Action). The activities again are simple but have a wonderful application to the scripture of the day.

I am completely thrilled with this book. I'm looking forward to introducing the little girls in my life to it. The author, Karen Whiting, has a fabulous Pinterest board dedicated completely to Princess parties. You should check it out for great ideas to supplement the book!

Book & DVD Review ~ Christmas from Heaven: The True Story of the Berlin Candy Bomber

Written by David T. Warner
Music by Mack Wilberg
Read by Tom Brokaw
Illustrated by Robert T. Barrett
Non fiction/Christmas

About the book:

Christmas from Heaven is the story of the humble beginnings of what became a beacon of hope to a war-torn land, the story of Gail Halvorsen, a young pilot in the US Army Air Corps who was assigned as a cargo pilot to the Berlin Airlift, in which US forces flew much-needed supplies into a Soviet-blockaded Berlin.

As he performed his duties, Lt. Halvorsen began to notice the German children gathered by the fences of Tempelhof Air Base. Knowing that they had very little, he one day offered them some chewing gum. From that small act, an idea sprang: He would "bomb" Berlin with candy. Fashioning small parachutes, he and his crew sent them floating down as they approached the Berlin airport, wiggling the wings of their C-54 as a signal to the children that their anticipated cargo would soon arrive.

Lt. Halvorsen became known by hundreds, if not thousands, of children in Berlin as "Uncle Wiggly Wings" or "The Candy Bomber." Word soon spread, and donations of candy and other supplies poured in from sympathetic Americans. Lt. Halvorsen's small idea became a great symbol of hope not only to German children in a bombed-out city but to all those who yearned for freedom.

My thoughts:

Christmas from Heaven is the perfect book and DVD for a family night. The book and story itself are interesting but when you add in the DVD it just adds to the tale and makes it feel complete. We read through the book first and then watched the DVD. After doing that I realized that it works best to do both at the same time.

Tom Brokaw narrates the story just as it is written in the book. Between readings is music by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There is also video clips of live footage during the time period. As a lover of history I found it to be fascinating.

I think your little ones will be intrigued by the story of candy being dropped from a plane. Your older kids will enjoy the story behind it and the adults will appreciate all the different aspects of the venture and how it came to be.

A little added bonus is an illustration of how the candy bombs were put together. Wouldn't it be fun to put some together as a family and reenact the story by dropping candy bombs from the top of the stairs?!! This would make a great addition to your families Christmas reading traditions.

Book Review ~ Mistletoe Memories by Jennifer AlLee, Carla Olson Gade, Lisa Karon Richardson and Gina Welborn

Carla Olson Gade, Gina Welborn, Lisa Karon Richardson, and Jennifer AlLee
Four-in-One Novellas
Historical Fiction

About the book:

Spend a heartfelt Christmas on Schooley’s Mountain as four generations make a house a home. Carpenter Stephan Yost vows to build a precocious spinster a home by Christmas. Civil War widow Mary Ann Plum learns the greatest peace on earth comes from giving and receiving love. Olympia Paris must protect the orphanage she grew up in from a man intending to play Father Christmas to most of the town. Joy Benucci turns to a modern-day Scrooge to save a transitional home for foster kids. Will Christmas be a season of miracles in their lives?

My thoughts:

I'm not usually drawn to collections of novellas, but when it comes to Christmas stories I'm in! I love to curl up on a cold afternoon and be able to finish a Christmas story in one sitting. This collection of stories was the perfect match for that desire.

All four of the stories take place in Schooley's Mountain, New Jersey. The first story is set in 1820 and the final story is present day. Each one has a nice little romance going on and it also involves children that have in some aspect become orphans.

I enjoyed reading three of the four stories. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the one that I didn't prefer. It just didn't happen to catch my fancy on that day. I'm going to skip naming which story it was and leave that up to you to decide for yourself.

If you want a quick little Christmas themed read I think that you will enjoy Mistletoe Memories. On most of the sites that I have looked at it is being offered at a great price! What a nice little treat for you or the book lover on your list.

Book Review ~ Christmas in Apple Ridge by Cindy Woodsmall

Cindy Woodsmall
Contemporary Fiction/Amish

Back of the book:

Experience the holidays with the Plain folk of Apple Ridge, Pennsylvania, in these touching novellas centered around love, romance, heartache, and restoration from best-selling author Cindy Woodsmall.

The Sound of Sleigh Bells
Beth Hertzler is unable to let go of a past tragedy, but when she discovers a large, intricately carved scene of Amish children playing in the snow, something deep inside Beth’s soul responds. Determined that her niece meet the gifted artist, her aunt tracks him down, but it’s not that simple – will Jonah be able to offer Beth the sleigh ride she’s always dreamed of and a second chance at real love?

The Christmas Singing
Mattie thought her childhood sweetheart adored her until he abruptly ended their engagement on Christmas Eve. Brokenhearted, Mattie moves away and pursues her longtime dream of becoming a cake decorator, and even finds a new beau. But when Mattie is forced to return home three years later, will learning the truth behind Gideon’s rejection restore her Christmas joy – or open the door to even deeper heartbreak?

The Dawn of Christmas
Sadie enjoys her freedom away from home and her mission trips to Peru, but after four years, her Old Order Amish family insists it’s time to come home and settle down. Levi, a bachelor who distrusts women after a family heartbreak, also has no desire for romance. To keep their families from meddling in their lives, Sadie and Levi devise a plan—but soon discover that the walls around their hearts are breaking down. Can they let go of their prejudices, learn to trust each other, and embrace a future together?

My thoughts:

I have come to look forward to reading Cindy Woodsmall's Christmas novellas. This year I picked up Christmas in Apple Ridge which is actually a three-in-one collection of these novellas. I have previously read The Sound of Sleigh Bells and The Christmas Singing but I had yet to read The Dawn of Christmas.

What a thrill it was to quickly read through the first two tales and remind myself where the ongoing stories left off. It was a good reminder of the little details that I had so enjoyed on the first read through. By the time I reached the last story I was completely enmeshed in the people and place of Apple Ridge. I liked the flow of the stories and how each one was actually a stand alone novella, yet they flowed from one to the other introducing us to new characters while updating us on the ones we had already met. It was interesting to begin with the account of Beth and Jonah and continue through the story of Mattie and Gideon and finally being introduced to Sadie and Levi.

For an added treat there is some bonus material included. After book two there are a couple of cake recipes from Sherry Gore that are delicious (my book club tried them). After book three there is a recipe to make your own oatmeal and honey soap from fellow blogger Kristin Lail of ASimplyEnchantedLife.com

For all you Christmas story lovers out there this is one to keep around to enjoy again each year. I have a special bookshelf for Christmas books and this will definitely go on it. It is a paperback but I still think it would make an excellent gift for the book lover on your Christmas list.
