Not Forsaken: Finding Freedom as Sons & Daughters of a Perfect Father by Louie Giglio | Christian Life Review

Not Forsaken by Louie Giglio

Christian Life

You are
chosen
loved
prized
wanted
believed in
by a perfect Father

In Not Forsaken, Pastor Louie Giglio invites ut to understand the character of God in a life-changing way: as a perfect Father who wants you to live under the waterfall of His blessing. You see, God is not the bigger version of your earthly dad. And He's inviting you to walk in freedom as His loved son or daughter.

Forgiveness is not a free pass for the person who has wounded you. Forgiveness is rooted in Christ's love and justice.

My Thoughts

I knew what this book was about when I picked it up. I knew it was going to be about our earthly fathers as well as our heavenly Father. I thought I was ready to read it. But I wasn't. I read the first chapter, cried my eyes out, and promptly tossed it on the coffee table and walked away.

But that book just kept calling my name. So I picked it back up and read some more. I cried a little more and put it back on the coffee table. After this second reading session I knew I needed to finish it. I knew I would find healing in the end but I also knew it would be like ripping a band-aid off. And it was.

My earthly father was a flawed man. He hurt me deeply but God showed me how to forgive and move on. Louie Giglio's writing took me through that journey again and it was tough but it was so worth it.

If you have a father, and we all do, you need to read this book. Even if you have to read it over a period of time like I did you should. Being able to see your relationship through the lens of your heavenly Father puts things in perspective.

I found this book to be a hard read but worth every tear. We all have a longing for a good father and this affirms that He's already there just waiting for you to come to Him.

The Very Best, Hands-On, Kinda Dangerous Family Devotions by Tim Shoemaker | Devotional Book Review

The Very Best, Hands-On, Kinda Dangerous Family Devotions by Tim Shoemaker

Tim Shoemaker
Devotional

The remedy to ho-hum, not-again, "Do we have to?" family devotions

Regular family devotions are important. Unfortunately, they're often . . . boring. But what if devotions looked less like sitting still and listening to someone read and more like, say, electrocuting a pickle? Or converting a leaf blower into a toilet paper launcher? Or lighting toothpaste on fire?

These hands-on, kinda dangerous, totally unforgettable object lessons (along with nearly fifty others) are not only more fun than other family devotions--they actually deliver the spiritual impact you desire for your kids. So put away the flannelgraph, get out the safety goggles, and start bringing the truths of Scripture to vivid life in your household. Just remember to change out of your Sunday clothes first.

My Thoughts

My first thought after reading this book was, "where in the world was this when I had a house full of kids?" This is seriously one of the best family devotional books I have come across.

The stereo-type for family devotions is somewhere along the lines of the family gathering in the living room with dad reading aloud, mom shushing everyone, and the kids squirming or zoning out. Not with this book. One of the devotions has you visiting a funeral home! If that doesn't get your kids attention I don't know what to say.

There is so much that I like about this book. It's very creative but still contains impactful lessons. The prep is minimal so it doesn't become a great burden to do the actual activities. I also like that it could be used in several situations. Of course it is designed for once a week family devotions but what about each night of summer camp? Or choose a few for a small group activity.

The little by-line on the front of the book says "52 Activities Your Kids Will Never Forget". I think that's true but I also think as an adult these activities will leave a lasting impact as well. I recommend this to all the parents. I'm sending a copy to each of my kids to use with the grands, you should too!

My Thoughts

I've said before that I'm not really a short daily devotional fan. I tend to prefer a more in-depth morning Bible study. But I'm always encouraged by the (in)courage community so I just couldn't resist taking a look at this new book.

The set up is simple. There's a short Scripture reading followed by an applicable story from one of the many (in)courage writers. Then it ends with a section called A Moment to Breathe.

I've read through most of the readings and have enjoyed them. The women that contributed to this project shared from their hearts and their normal everyday lives. The stories could have been written by any one of us and that's part of the beauty of it. We all have more in common than not and it was nice to read about fellow sojourners and how they were able to face what was in front of them with grace while following Christ.

My favorite part was the ending section. Each day gave simple ways to put into action the core concept of the reading. When I say simple I mean simple. You don't need to run to the store for ingredients or supplies you just need to implement in small ways what you've just read.

This was an encouraging book for me personally but I also think it would be a nice gift for a young mother or a sweet woman that's going through a hard patch. The book itself is beautiful. It's a hardback but has a cloth-like cover and a ribbon to mark your place. I think I'm going to have to pick up a couple more to give as gifts.

Awaken: 90 Days With The God Who Speaks by Priscilla Shirer | Daily Devotional Review

Awaken: 90 Days With The God Who Speaks by Priscilla Shirer

Book review disclosure.

Nonfiction / Daily Devotional / Christian Living

The choice of a devotional book is more personal than most. This kind of reading is not merely for the purpose of leisure and enjoyment. No, with this kind of resource you’re expecting and praying for something more. You want to hear from God, receive His direction, and be refreshed in the depths of your soul. Only God’s Word can do that.

So you need to choose wisely.

With her first devotional book, Priscilla Shirer makes your choice easy. For even though she’s written multiple best-selling books and Bible studies, including the 2016 ECPA “Christian Book of the Year” (Fervent), even though she regularly speaks to thousands at conference venues and churches around the world, even though she was the lead actress in a #1 box-office feature film (War Room) . . . It all starts for Priscilla where it all starts for you.

Alone with God. Alone with His Word. Eager to hear His voice. Prepared to humbly and obediently respond. She hopes, more than anything else, that the daily insights you receive in these pages will challenge, encourage, and strengthen you in every way.

These ninety devotions from the heart of a mom, wife, encourager, and friend will Awaken you each day with fresh insights gleaned from the Spirit of God. Ready to help you mine the treasures of Scripture and fortify you for the day ahead.
This devotional is . . . a good choice.

My Thoughts

I tend to like in depth Bible study so I don't do many daily devotional type of books. But I have done several of Priscilla's Bible studies and decided that I'd give this one a try. So glad that I did. I know it's cliche to say that I was hooked from the beginning, but I was. The very first daily devotion is still resonating with me weeks later.

The set-up of the book is simple. There are ninety different devotions that start with a small portion of scripture and then follow with thoughts by Priscilla. Then there are questions to contemplate and and area to journal your thoughts if you desire.

As I said earlier I'm not usually drawn to this type of reading but I liked Priscilla's style in this. She presented each day's reading in a way that made you contemplate what it means in your life. The stories are hers but the situations are common to women so it was very easy to relate to the readings.

I thought that this would be a great morning and evening reading. It would also make a great gift to a friend. I thought it would be especially nice for that young mother that doesn't have gobs of time to do in depth Bible study but desires to stay in the Word amid the chaos of raising young children. Whether you decide to give it as a gift or use it yourself, I'm pretty sure that you won't be disappointed.

"Unforgiveness keeps us relegated to the artificial boundaries created by yesterday's disappointments."

The Beginner's Bible My First Book of Prayers | Children's Book Review

The Beginner's Bible My First Book of Prayers

Book review disclosure.

Zonderkidz
Nonfiction

The Beginner’s Bible® has been a favorite with young children and their parents since its release in 1989 with over 25 million products sold.
The Beginner's Bible My First Book of Prayers helps young children discover that they can talk to God about anything from the beauty of creation to their friendships and emotions. Thankfulness, praise, and requests for God's help are all included.

Sixteen sweet prayers, written with the child's daily experiences in mind, focus on important character traits such as caring and forgiveness. For each prayer, charming illustrations from The Beginner's Biblehighlight a different Bible character or scene that illustrates the truth found in the prayer. Ideal gift for a new parent or young child, and a great addition to church or daycare library.

God Created All Things

My Thoughts

If your family enjoys The Beginner's Bible then you need to add this companion piece to your library. The characters and verses will be familiar to your children and will help them connect with what is being taught. The focus of My First Book of Prayers is of course prayer. There are sixteen different selections that will highlight different events in the Bible and the corresponding prayer that the people would have likely prayed.

For example the first selection is from Genesis and involves Adam and Eve in the garden. The prayer focuses on gratitude. That's an easy thing to imagine if you think about the beauty and provision that they were surrounded by. It's also a great way to begin to teach your children to look around and see the beauty and provision that God has provided for them right here.

The rest of the sections contain similar examples like a prayer for courage such as one David would have prayed when he was up against Goliath. Or a prayer of kindness like the good Samaritan must have prayed over the poor wounded man he rescued.

Each example points to the many different ways that we can have a conversation with God all day long in every situation we find ourselves in.

The book itself is a padded board book that makes it easy for little hands to use over and over again. It would make a wonderful addition to your morning or evening storytime routine.

NKJV Reader's Bible from B&H Publishing

ENJOY GOD'S WORD
IN SIMPLIFIED FORM.

STUDY THE BIBLE
IN A UNIQUE WAY.

The NKJV Reader's Bible includes the full text of Scripture in the format of a novel. This unique format provides an opportunity to experience the Bible as a story uninterrupted by verse numbers or cross references, allowing a fresh experience with the text. This edition features the bestselling New King James Version in single-column text.

My Thoughts

Many women collect shoes and handbags. I tend to collect Bibles. (Okay so I have my fair share of shoes and handbags too!) I have a Bible that I like to study from, I have one that I do Bible Art Journaling in, I have one I keep in my car and I have one I carry to church with me. (I also have electronic ones on my phone, Kindle and tablet.) Each one is dear to me and just the right one for the situation.

Last week I received a copy of the new NKJV Reader's Bible. It's pretty and feels great in my hands but why in the world would I need another Bible? Well every other year I like to read the Bible through cover to cover. When I saw that this is a Bible that includes the full text of Scripture but in a novel format I couldn't resist giving it a try as a reading Bible.

I know this may just be psychological but I think it reads faster than a normal Bible. I tend to get caught up in footnotes and references when I am reading so it takes me longer than I always anticipate to cover the daily reading. With this Bible it's not like that I just read to my heart's content and find that I am reading more and enjoying the story itself more than I have previously.

This particular Bible isn't marked like a normal Bible with chapters and verses. Instead it is marked with the beginning of each book (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, etc.). You are able to tell when you've gone into a new chapter because the beginning of each chapter has the first letter of the first word in a different and larger font. It really is like reading a novel.

If you are one that likes to read the Bible through on a regular basis this would be a great addition to your library. I also think that it would make a nice gift for the avid reader on your list.

She Reads Truth: Holding Tight to Permanent in a World That's Passing Away by Raechel Myers & Amanda Bible Williams | Christian Life Review

She Reads Truth: Holding Tight to Permanent in a World That's Passing Away by Raechel Myers & Amanda Bible Williams

Book review disclosure.

Christian Life / Women's Issues

She wants faith, hope, and love.
She wants help and healing.
She wants to hear and be heard, to see and be seen.
She wants things set right.

She wants to know what is true—not partly true, or sometimes true, or almost true. She wants to see Truth itself, face-to-face. But here, now, these things are all cloudy. Hope is tinged with hurt. Faith is shaded by doubt. Lesser, broken things masquerade as love.

How does she find something permanent when the world around her is always changing, when not even she can stay the same? And if she finds it, how does she hold on?

She Reads Truth tells the stories of two women who discovered, through very different lives and circumstances, that only God and His Word remain unchanged as the world around them shifted and slipped away. Infused with biblical application and Scripture, this book is not just about two characters in two stories, but about one Hero and one Story. Every image points to the bigger picture—that God and His Word are true. Not because of anything we do, but because of who He is. Not once, not occasionally, but right now and all the time.

Sometimes it takes everything moving to notice the thing that doesn’t move. Sometimes it takes telling two very different stories to notice how the Truth was exactly the same in both of them.

For anyone searching for a solid foundation to cling to, She Reads Truth is a rich and honest Bible-filled journey to finally find permanent in a world that’s passing away.

My Thoughts

I've never written a book but I can imagine that it takes a great deal of courage to put your thoughts on paper and then send it out to the masses where it will be judged. That's probably incredibly hard when you are doing a work of fiction but to write something very personal where you stand virtually naked before the world must take not only courage but conviction.

Raechel Myers and Amanda Bible Williams have both in abundance. She Reads Truth is open and honest while at the same time compelling and convicting. Both women take us through some very tough and defining times in their lives where loss seems to be at the center of the story. And maybe for a lot of people loss would be the center. But in their stories the consistent and permanent part of the unfolding drama is Jesus. Neither one of them were spared deep soul shattering grief but in every single scenario Jesus held them and allowed them to continue on.

The hashtags for this book and movement are #SheReadsTruth and #SheIsMe. After reading the book I am even more convinced that it is appropriate. While the stories contained in the book belong to Raechel and Amanda they also have pieces of my story and probably yours too. And just as Jesus was at the center of their redemption stories He's at the center of mine and can be the center of yours too.

If everything is falling apart around you or if everything is going along fine this book is for you! Through their circumstances you will begin to recognize just how central Jesus is to each of our stories. He hears, He sees, and He loves you. There is not a moment that you are out of His reach. I'm so grateful that Raechel and Amanda were willing to heed the call of the Lord to write these words because they were a wonderful reminder that all of this, the good, the bad, and the ugly, are just passing away. But there is One that is permanent that is worthy of everything.

Giddy Up, Eunice: Because Women Need Each Other by Sophie Hudson | Women's Issues Review

Giddy Up, Eunice: Because Women Need Each Other by Sophie Hudson

Book review disclosure.

Nonfiction / Christian Life / Women's Issues

Saddle up, sister.
This is going to be fun.

It's easy for women to focus on what seems to separate us: differences in age, parenting styles, career goals, or maybe even core beliefs about whether leggings can adequately serve as pants (the struggle is real, y'all.) The reality, though, is that we have far more in common than we realize, and since Scripture shows us the blessing of friendships across generations, it's high time we step out of our same-age, same-stage silos. Life is so much better that way.

Sophie Hudson, in the delightfully quirky Southern style her readers have come to know and love, sends out a rallying cry for women everywhere to open our eyes and see the people God has put in our lives--whether they're behind us, beside us, or in front of us. It is such a gift to love one another, walk with one another, and soak up the blessings that flow across all generations.

Around the Table with Sophie Hudson, Suzanne Lee and Connie Bradley
from BH Publishing on Vimeo.

My Thoughts

If you've never had the pleasure of reading a book by Sophie Hudson just go ahead and start with this one. I promise you'll be hooked. Sophie's humor is so quirky but her heart goes deep. I want to move in next door and soak up all that is Sophie. We're of a similar age but her delight in all things pop culture just goes over my head. I'm a book nerd extraordinaire. Even with all of our differences I have a strong feeling that we would get along wonderfully. And that's just what this book is all about. Women together.

Sophie takes a look at cross-generational female relationships through the familiar Bible stories of Elizabeth and Mary, Ruth and Naomi, and finally Lois and Eunice (and Timothy). The first section on Elizabeth and Mary was eye-opening in a new way to me. Before reading this book I had always considered Elizabeth more of a mentor-type to Mary. But if you think about it they are really more contemporaries in many ways even with a likely fifty year age gap. Neither had ever been pregnant let alone given birth plus they both became pregnant in unusual circumstances. Eye-opening my friends!

My new perspective continued with Ruth and Naomi. Again I have always looked at Naomi as Ruth's valued mentor. But when you step back and take a good look at the story you realize that they also are in the same boat. Both are widows that have virtually lost everything. Neither has any children to take care of them so the bravery to go forth comes from leaning on each other.

Then there is Lois, Eunice, and Timothy. I must admit that up until this section most of Sophie's anecdotes about her family made me laugh. But by the end of this section I was sobbing. At my age this section hit pretty close to home. I don't want to say too much about it but would rather let you read it with fresh eyes and perspective. I will tell you that Sophie is right, it ain't over till it's over, so we as women need to stay in it. We must open our eyes to those around us and dive in and be blessed probably more than the one that we are ministering to.

Understanding Baptism (Church Basics) by Bobby Jamieson | Christian Ministry Resources Review

Understanding Baptism (Church Basics) by Bobby Jamieson

A book was provided which left me delighted. The following review was prepared just for you!

Church Basics Series
Christian Ministry Resource

What's the big deal about baptism?

Jesus commands his disciples to be baptized, and it’s a glorious picture of a person’s union with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. Still, many Christians feel unclear about the topic, having more questions than answers. This short work provides a biblical explanation of baptism. What is it? Who should be baptized? Why is it required for church membership? And how should churches practice baptism?

My Thoughts

I was saved and baptized over thirty years ago and I have always felt like I have a pretty good understanding on the act of baptism. When I received Understanding Baptism in the mail I figured it would be a quick read (it's only 74 pages) that would basically be addressing issues for new believers.
Well I was sort of right because the book (booklet?) does reach out to new believers but it was also written for the more mature believer that is just wanting more specifics and of course it is also designed for the church leadership. Pretty diverse audience if you ask me, but it works. Bobby Jamieson doesn't beat around the bush with anecdotes and cute stories, instead he addresses the issue head on.
Let me give you a little taste of his style with this passage from the chapter How Should Churches Practice Baptism?:
"Baptism is a church's act of affirming and portraying a believer's union with Christ by immersing him or her in water, and a believer's act of publicly committing him or herself to Christ and his people, thereby uniting a believer to the church and marking off him or her from the world. In baptism, a believer commits to God's people and God's people commit to that believer. Therefore, where a church exists, baptism should confer church membership. The church doing the baptizing should, by that very act, be inducting this new believer into their number. Baptism isn't just a prerequisite to church membership; normally, baptism begins church membership. Church membership is the house, and baptism is the front door." (pg.67)
After reading this short text I think the reader will not only come away with a greater understanding of baptism but also a more precise understanding of the role of the church in the act. I read the book aloud to my husband on a recent road trip and it sparked some interesting and in depth conversations.

I think this would make a wonderful resource for small groups or even Sunday or Wednesday night services where most of the participants are believers. I think often a person is saved and then proceeds to baptism (or not) without the knowledge of what that signifies both to the person being baptized and the body of believers (the church). With that in mind I highly recommend this book to church leadership with the hope that they will then share it with their membership.

Mother & Son: The Respect Effect by Emerson Eggerichs, PhD | Family & Relationships Book Review

Family & Relationships

It's true: sons and daughters equally need love and respect. But research has shown that the felt need during stress and conflict differs among males and females. Males filter their world more through the respect grid. If you are a mother with a son, this book is for you!

Just as Emerson Eggerichs, PhD, transformed millions of marital relationships with a biblical understanding of love and respect, he now turns these principles to one of the most important relationships of all: one between a mother and her son. Mother & Son shows how to use Respect-Talk and presents the testimonies of mothers who have tried it. Emerson provides a game plan so you not only see the man in the boy but also recognize his innate desires for conquest, hierarchy, authority, insight, relationship, and sexuality.

This book is about a mother going beyond her love and applying respect to the heart of her son.

My Thoughts

As a mother of two grown sons this book was hard for me to read. By the end of the second chapter I felt like I had done just about everything wrong. That's not an easy thing to digest. But I stuck with the book and I am very glad that I did.

My intention in raising my sons was never to squelch them or convey an unintended message. But I did. As I proceeded through the book I began to hear the message that it is never too late to begin using the respect-talk with your son. So I went out on a limb and gave it a try. I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised by the results. I'm fortunate to have good relationships with my sons but through applying the guidelines in the book I can already see a shift in our relationships.

Ideally this book should be read by mothers of little boys so that you can apply the principles from the beginning. (I'm wondering if this would be too odd as a baby shower gift!) Baring that this book should be on the must read list of all boy moms. In hindsight the concepts make sense. These traits in my boys were not new to me, after all I spent almost every day of their lives with them. As their mom it makes sense that they need to be respected. They are after all men in the making.

If you are a mom to boys of any age get this book for yourself. I can almost guarantee that after reading it you will have a different outlook on your relationship with your sons. I can also almost guarantee that you'll want to share it with every other boy mom you know.

Urban Legends of the New Testament: 40 Common Misconceptions by David A. Croteau {Book Review}

David A. Croteau
Nonfiction / Biblical Studies

Urban Legends of the New Testament surveys forty of the most commonly misinterpreted passages in the New Testament. These "urban legends" often arise because interpreters neglect a passage's context, misuse historical background information, or misunderstand the Greek language.

With examples from the Gospels, Acts, the Epistles, and Revelation, Urban Legends of the New Testament will not only help readers avoid missteps in these texts but also provide a model for engaging in correct interpretation of other New Testament passages. In addition, QR codes are placed throughout the book so the reader can watch David Croteau carefully navigate through ten urban legends to arrive at the true meaning of each text.

My Thoughts

Urban Legends of the New Testament is absolutely fascinating and left me feeling quite sheepish. Before reading this book if you would have asked me if I thought I knew my Bible well I would have pretty confidently said yes. I've been to Bible College and sat through class after class learning a hermeneutical approach to understanding the text.

The very first urban legend bowled me over. The title of the chapter is There Was No Room at the Inn and it covers the Scriptures from Luke 2:1-7. A very familiar passage. So familiar in fact that I would hazard a guess that most of us can recite it from memory. After reading Croteau's chapter on it I have to laugh at not only my preconceptions but also those of the vast majority. As a credit to him I can honestly say that I will never again read that portion of Scripture in the same way.

The second urban legend was entitled We Three Kings of Orient Are. By the end of the chapter I was cheering because I actually already knew the misconceptions. A big thanks goes out to Dr. Sherman for that one! Of course I didn't have long before I was once again astounded at my lack of understanding. But sure enough when I compared Croteau's notes with Scripture it came out just the way he said it would.

This book is designed to be a pseudo text book, but I'm here to tell you that it doesn't read like one. It is quite reader friendly and I think that anyone who reads their Bible would enjoy reading this book as well. Croteau has a way of presenting complicated scenarios and facts so that even the non Bible student can grasp and retain. In fact his whole approach is one of discovery rather than shaming for not knowing in the first place. It's a very refreshing way of teaching.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any Christian whether a lay-person or a church staff member. Even if you know each of the forty passages and completely understand their meaning I am sure you will be able to take away some nuggets that will enhance your walk with Christ.

End Times and the Secret of the Mahdi by Michael Youssef {Book Review}

Nonfiction / Biblical Studies

As our world seems to be spinning
out of control, where should we turn
for insight into the end times?

End Times and the Secret of the Mahdi is an action plan for living confidently in these turbulent and uncertain times. In this exciting new book, Dr. Michael Youssef examines current events in light of end times prophecies, revealing:
  • Striking parallels between the Antichrist of Revelation and the Mahdi of Islam
  • The rise of ISIS and other events leading to the end times
  • The movement toward a one-world government
  • Insights into the events of the Great Tribulation
Though most of Revelation deals with future events, this book is not primarily about the future. It's about the present--your present.

As you read these pages, you will be encouraged to stand for truth without compromise as God moves human events toward a dramatic and triumphant conclusion. And even when it appears that evil is winning, you will be assured by God's promises and filled with eager expectation for our Lord's return.

My Thoughts

If you listen closely you can almost hear hear the earth groaning. The wars in the Middle-East, the terrorists in Europe, all of these awful things make us think of the end times spoken about in the book of Revelation. In Dr. Michael Youssef's new book End Times and the Secret of the Mahdi these things are looked at and explored.
I've read many books on the book of Revelation and the subject of the Antichrist so I was expecting something similar. I was pleasantly surprised at Dr. Youssef's fresh perspective. Rather than taking it verse by verse through the book of Revelation he chose instead to look at it in the major themes of the book. He also related it to our current situation and how things are lining up for this ultimate battle and triumph of Christ.
I really liked this approach. It allowed me to concentrate on a particular portion such as the new heaven and earth. Dr. Youssef used Scripture to show what has been foretold and what is to come. Another thing that I appreciated was how clear he was when he was giving his own opinion. He made certain that the reader understood that while his opinion is based on his understanding of Scripture it was just that, his opinion.
If the rise of ISIS and all the terrorism around the world has you scared and wondering what is going to happen pick up Dr. Youssef's book. You'll be reminded not only about the course of events to come but more importantly that Christ will triumph and we that are His followers will be united with Him.
