My Thoughts

Our kids are crazy about trains. In fact when we are going on a trip they always want to take their trains with them. We wind up tossing them into the bottom of the backpack and hoping that they make it back to the house.

I was asked to review the Brio: My First Take Along Set and I am so pleased with it. In fact I'm wondering where it's been all my parenting life. The set comes with a couple of ramps and two train cars but it has room to add additional tracks and trains. It's so lightweight and compact that the two-year-old can easily carry it himself.

We've been taking it everywhere and it's been a hit. Before we leave my little one grabs a couple of his favorite train cars and some tracks. We stow them away and then we're off. This has been a bonus going to grandma's house or when he has to accompany me to a meeting. He'll literally play quietly with this for hours. I highly recommend it to anyone with littles that love trains!

New Wooden Toys For Easter from BRIO

Easter is upon us and with it the need to put together those lovely Easter baskets. I love a good chocolate Easter bunny but I also like a balance when it comes to too many sweets. So the decision is to limit the Easter basket chocolates or the Easter brunch desserts. I vote for limiting the chocolates!

In order to make up for the deficit we try to put a cool new toy in each of the baskets. This year we've chosen some new wooden toys from Brio.

This year our baby is one and he's walking. We found this cute Brio Pull Along Horse that will be perfect for him as he practices his newly acquired skill. The little horse makes him squeal with laughter as it bobs and rolls along behind him. My favorite part is that it doesn't have batteries!

For our middle boy we found this Brio Countryside Horse Set. What I appreciate about Brio train sets is not only are they durable but they are detailed and very interactive. The boys love all the little doors and lights and whistles that are included with this set.

Here's a cute little video that will show you all the fun accessories that are included with this set. Just a heads up, this set takes 2 AA batteries.

Our oldest son already has several Brio train sets and accessories so we decided to get him the Brio RC Travel Train. The remote control lets the little engineer make the train go forward with two different speeds. It also will travel in reverse and has buttons for lights and a whistle. The best part of this is that it has two different channels so we can always add another remote control train so both of our big boys can play together. The only drawback is that this set takes 4 AA batteries but it's totally worth it when you watch your little ones playing and using their imagination!

I can't say enough good things about the Brio train sets and accessories. They are well made and last for years and years.

The Princess Parables Dolls and Books ~ Christmas Gift Guide for Girls

I am not anti-fashion doll in the least. My daughter had several and my granddaughters do as well. But I've always thought that it would be nice if there were a doll that promoted Godly characteristics for our girls. I'm happy to say that Zonderkidz has now released a line of dolls and books that do just that.

The Princess Parables line includes five daughters of the King. Their names are Faith, Hope, Grace, Joy, and Charity. Each of their stories are inspired by the parables that Jesus taught. Young girls will discover that the most important beauty is that which resides within. Each story teaches about God and His kingdom and the love He has for each of His princesses!

Currently each princess has a doll and two different books. The doll is the same size as the popular fashion dolls (i.e. Barbie). My favorite part is their beautiful eyes. Their dresses are absolutely stunning. My grand girls fell in love the moment we took them out of the boxes. The first book is designed to either be read aloud to your young girl or read by a more advanced reader. My oldest grand girl is in the second grade and she could read these books with a bit of help. The second book is from the I Can Read! line and is a level one which is made up of simple sentences for eager new readers. My second grand girl is a Kindergartner and is just beginning to read. She was able to read most of these books aloud to me.

Now let me introduce you to each Princess and her stories!

“Search everywhere for the lost kitten.
Bring her back safely to the castle.”

In Princess Grace and the Little Lost Kitten, Princess Grace promised her father she would care for the kittens she found. But Poppy, the curious one, has run away. Princess Grace must find him, even if it means searching the entire kingdom . . . even braving the Black Woods. Along the way, she remembers a parable Jesus told about God’s great love for us and how he too searches for each one who is lost.

In Princess Grace and Poppy , Princess Grace finds five kittens in the hall closet. What else can she do but ask her father, the king, if she can keep them? With promises to care for them and get help from her sisters, Grace experiences firsthand how much responsibility it is to care completely for something. Based upon the parable of the lost sheep, readers can begin to understand just how much God must care for all of us!

"Even though we don't understand why things like this happen,
God uses these things to grow our hearts."

Princess Faith's Mysterious Garden is based on the Parable of the Sower in Matt. 13:1-23 Princess Faith decides at long last to plant her own garden. She is deriving great pleasure in the entire process of sowing, watering, and watching the seeds grow when she is faced with a myriad of events that begin to take place that cause her garden to die, little by little. Some incidents are very sudden and mysterious and others are just plain scary As she discovers how her garden grows best, she also learns about her own heart.

In Princess Faith's Garden Surprise Princess Faith has always wanted to plant a lovely flower garden. When the chance presents itself, she and her sisters share the experience, only to find out it isn’t all that easy to get things to grow unless conditions are just right.

"I will sell everything I have to buy the ring."

Princess Hope and the Hidden Treasure is based on the Parable of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl in Matt. 13:44-45 Princess Hope is on a shopping spree with her sisters and discovers her grandmother's lost ring! It's for sale, but the price is high--even for a princess. How far will Princess Hope go to buy it? And will the princess sisters' hunt for the greatest treasure be successful?

In the I Can Read! Princess Hope and the Hidden Treasure a ring and some mysterious clues send Princess Hope and her sisters on a treasure hunt, where they find out that true treasures are not always material things.

"No one can come to the surprise party, Daddy.
What will we do?"

In Princess Joy's Birthday Blessing Princess Joy can’t wait for her birthday. There will be treats, games, and an enormous cake with delicious icing! But when the other princes and princesses can’t come and Princess Joy finds out, she comes up with a surprising plan to fill her day with special guests and unexpected gifts. Will it work? Her idea, shared in Princess Joy’s Birthday Blessing, comes from a parable Jesus told about a party a lot like hers.

In this level one I Can Read! Princess Joy's Party, Jesus' lesson about who is best to invite to your home comes alive for little princesses just learning to read! When no one accepts the invitation to Princess Joy's birthday party, she is sad. But her father, the king, helps her to understand that there are more ways to celebrate a special day and much better gifts to get than ones wrapped in pretty paper and bows.

"How can we help this hurting boy, God?"

Princess Charity's Courageous Heart is based on the Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:30 37 Princess Charity is disconcerted with an argument that has transpired at the castle and decides her best recourse would be to run away. As her impulsive journey unfolds she encounters a phenomenon that would ultimately alter her life forever. From her hiding place in the Weeping Woodlands, she sees a wounded dog that is old and unloved lying on the side of the road. She watches as others find him and stop, but none reach out to help him. She decides to befriend the hurting creature, even though her decision would mean she may be found by many of the King s men who are looking for her. She can only help him by taking him back to the castle to nurse him back to health where she learns the true meaning of charity and mercy.

Princess Charity loves to ride her horse Daisy across the kingdom and normally feels free to go everywhere. But father has issued an order---to stay away from the neighbor’s border. Charity wants to obey her father, the king, but when she sees people go by an injured young boy without stopping to help, she must make a decision … should she obey her father or go to help the boy in need? Based on the parable of the Good Samaritan, this level one I Can Read! Princess Charity's Golden Heart brings a lesson of love to life for little girls.

Another book in the Princess Parables series is the I Can Read! Princess Sisters Treasury. It contains three stories, Princess Grace and Poppy, Princess Faith's Garden Surprise and, Princess Charity's Golden Heart

In the very near future there will also be a sticker and activity book released for each Princess.

These dolls and their corresponding books would make a wonderful gift for every little princess in your life. Family Christian Book Stores and Mardel are carrying the dolls and books in store and online. You can also look for them in select Lifeway stores.

Christmas Gift Guide ~ Mike the Knight Glendragon Castle Playset

My oldest son is into knights and dragons and saving the world. He really enjoys watching Mike the Knight on NickJr when he's at Granny and Poppy's. What could be better than having a play set to use his imagination to make up new scenarios for Mike to be the hero?!!

As the mom I really enjoy listening to Little M play. Just hearing the changing voices of the characters brings a smile to my face. What I find priceless about this product is that both of my boys can play with it TOGETHER! Sure they argue over who's going to be Mike (who wouldn't want to be Mike?) but once that is settled they play nicely together for an extended amount of time.

If you have little ones that love adventure I think you'll find that Mike the Knight Glendragon Castle Playset makes an excellent gift.

Christmas Gift Guide ~ Wheely Bug

My youngest just isn't quite big enough to maneuver a bike with pedals. He gets so upset when he sees big brother wheeling around the driveway. We needed something that he could manage and enjoy. We found the Wheely Bug! Isn't it adorable?!!

Little H can now keep up with his big brother! It is so cute to watch his little legs make that mouse go. Let me tell you he can get some speed up on that thing. It is small enough to take with us and he rides on it inside too.

If you are looking for something for your younger set to ride on check out the line from Prince Lionheart. The Wheely Bug comes in several different characters and is made of very durable materials. Its wide base makes it sturdy for little ones as they get on and off. It is also safe to us indoors and wont scratch your floors.

You can purchase a Wheely Bug at Prince Lionheart website.  Also, connect with Prince Lionheart on Facebook and Twitter  to enter their regular giveaways and keep up with new product news!

Christmas Gift Guide ~ HeartSong Doodle Bag

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hi Rambles of a SAHM readers! It's Laura from the Tasty Tuesdays recipe posts and blogger over at Food Snob St. Louis. I'm here today to share with you a fantastic website for your Christmas toy shopping, HearthSong.

Our oldest child will be 2 in January. I've noticed with her that we've gone through a few cycles of having tons of great toy options for her that challenge her, help her learn and are fun, but then about 3-4 months later it seems that she's outgrown them all. When I go toy shopping for her, I often get confused as to what would be a good age-appropriate toy that will last her longer than just a few months. Unfortunately, the aisles of the toy stores I've been to aren't organized that way (age level and purpose of toy), but rather by certain brands. Lucky for me, and all the other parents out there who have felt the same way, there is HearthSong. The HearthSong website is organized not only by age level, but also by interest category. It makes finding a toy or gift for any child so simple! As I searched though the site, I was very impressed with the variety and quality of items they offer. As part of this review, HearthSong sent me this Doodle Bag for our nearly two-year-old.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The zip-up canvas bag features pockets for crayons and chalk (or other art supplies like stickers), a doodle pad and mini-chalkboard.

Our child loved putting the crayons away in the pockets, drawing, and zipping and unzipping it. I love that it is all in one compact place, and am really looking forward to using it as entertainment in the car as we travel during the holidays.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Once she had enough of the crayon doodling, she quickly started on a masterpiece on the chalkboard wall in our playroom. I know that she will be very excited to be able to draw with chalk in the car on the mini-chalkboard in the back of the Doodle Bag.

If you are looking for high-quality, age-appropriate toys that will foster creativity and imagination in children, I highly recommend checking out the HearthSong website!

Having both a 1 year old and 4 year old it can be challenging to find toys that both boys can play with together. I also prefer toys that let them be creative while playing. I like toys that have several different levels of play and that will grow with the boys.

I have always been impressed with the quality of Vtech toys and the Go! Go! Smart Wheels™ Train Station Playset did not disappoint.  When the box arrived the boys wanted to play with it right away and I was not so sure since hubby was not there to put it together however the boys were not going to wait for dad. I started pulling out all the parts and setting them on the train table when I noticed the boys working together and building it themselves. Literally all I had to do was put batteries in the tower and train, the boys did the rest.

They played with the Go! Go! Smart Wheels™ Train Station until it was bedtime and then the next day it was the first toy they played with as well. Did you notice I said THEY? Yes, they both love this toy and it is big enough for them to play it together without fighting. My oldest loves to be in charge and he comes up with ways to rearrange the tracks and my 1 year old feels big since he can help snap the tracks together. My 1 year old also loves all the interactive parts and buttons to push while my oldest loves the crank you turn to make the train go down the hill.

Overall I have been impressed with the quality of materials, how it engages both of my boys, and it is a toy they keep coming back to! I also love the creativity it brings out in both boys. My oldest has already asked for more Go! Go! Smart Wheels which is great since grandparents are always wanting to know what to buy for birthdays and Christmas. I am so excited that VTech is giving a reader a chance to win one too!

Both my boys love the Giggle Gang toys.  I love watching  both of them laugh together. I also like that you can adjust the volume, and remove the batteries so the Giggle Gang can be washed. Since little H is putting everything in his mouth right now I only want to buy toys that can be washed or wiped down.
