The Gryphon Heist (Talia Inger Series #1) by James R Hannibal | Suspense Book Review

The Gryphon Heist by James R Hannibal

Talia Inger Series #1
Suspense

Talia Inger is a rookie CIA case officer assigned not to the Moscow desk as she had hoped but to the forgotten backwaters of Eastern Europe--a department only known as "Other." When she is tasked with helping a young, charming Moldovan executive secure his designs for a revolutionary defense technology, she figures she'll be back in DC within a few days. But that's before she knows where the designs are stored--and who's after them.

With her shady civilian partner, Adam Tyler, Talia takes a deep dive into a world where criminal minds and unlikely strategies compete for access to the Gryphon, a high-altitude data vault that hovers in the mesosphere. But is Tyler actually helping her? Or is he using her for his own dark purposes?

My Thoughts

The Gryphon Heist is the first book by James Hannibal that I've read. Where have I been? I am definitely going to seek out his previous novels. He even has some juvenile fiction that I am going to look into for my grandkids.

Several years ago there was a show on television called Leverage. My husband and I used to watch it and really enjoyed it. I thought The Gryphon Heist had the same feel. It is most definitely a suspense novel but it has a light cleverness to it as well.

The characters are a motley crew of CIA agents and criminals. But likable criminals if you will. There is a lot of background that is covered in this first book of a coming series. I'm not going to go into it because it will be better for you the reader to uncover it yourself. Let's just say that the history of each of the main characters plays an important role in each of their motivations.

Like any good suspense story there are plenty of plot twists and turns. There are some points that you will guess at and get right and there are others that you won't even figure into the equation. I enjoyed every chapter and found the overall book to be a quick read.

The Gryphon Heist is a complete story but the characters go into the next novel. I've only read the sneak peek for book two but it looks like it will be just as good.

State of Lies by Siri Mitchell | Suspense Book Review

State of Lies by Siri Mitchell

Siri Mitchell
Suspesnse

The secrets of those closest to us can be the most dangerous of all.

Months after her husband, Sean, is killed by a hit-and-run driver, physicist Georgie Brennan discovers he lied to her about where he had been going that day. A cryptic notebook, a missing computer, and strange noises under her house soon have her questioning everything she thought she knew.

With her job hanging by a thread, her son struggling to cope with his father’s death, and her four-star general father up for confirmation as the next secretary of defense, Georgie quickly finds herself tangled in a web of political intrigue that has no clear agenda and dozens of likely villains.

Only one thing is clear: someone wants her dead too. And the more she digs for the truth, the fewer people she can trust.

Not her friends.

Not her parents.

Maybe not even herself.

My Thoughts

Well hello Siri Mitchell! When one of your favorite authors decides to venture out of her usual genre it can be a little unnerving. Will it be any good? Should I give it a try? In the case of 'State of Lies' the answers are yes and yes.

'State of Lies' is filled with plot twists and turns that keep you guessing and rethinking your theories. By the end of the story I was about 50 percent correct in my assumptions. And I was totally amazed at what I had made wrong guesses on.

I really hope that Siri continues writting her signature historical fiction but I also want to read more suspense from her as well. Maybe a combination of both??? Anyway, if you are a fan of Siri Mitchell or of suspense (of the political nature) then I am quite sure you are going to enjoy this one.

Arcade and the Triple T Token (The Coin Slot Chronicles #1) by Rashad Jennings | Juvenile Fiction Review

Arcade and the Triple T Token (The Coin Slot Chronicles #1) by Rashad Jennings

The Coin Slot Chronicles #1
Rashad Jennings
Juvenile Fiction

Eleven-year-old Arcade Livingston has a problem. Two of them, actually.

The Tolley twins: bully brothers who are making Arcade's move to a new city and fitting in at his new school even harder. They expect him to do their research papers for the fifth-grade career expo's theme: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Trouble is, Arcade doesn't even know his own answer to that question.

Then at the library, Arcade's favortie sanctuary, a mysterious woman gives him a golden arcade token necklace that grants him a unique gift. A gift that allows him to time travel to different points in history and even into his own future--from standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the dugout with Babe Ruth to hanging on for dear life on the back of a bucking bull. Together with his sister, Zoe, and a small circle of friends, Arcade has a whole new set of problems on his hands. And an even bigger mystery to solve.

The question for Arcade is no longer, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" It's, "Who is the rightful owner of the magic Triple T Token . . . and where will we end up next?

My Thoughts

If you have a middle-grade reader that also happens to be a boy then you need to take a look at this book. Arcade and the Triple T Token has a lot to offer for the reader. Arcade Livingston has just moved to a new town and is starting a new school so obviously the story deals with what it is like to be the new kid. It deals with bullying and some creative ways to handle it. It has a bit of time-travel which adds to the excitement. And it also has an element of mystery. What else could you want?

This story is well-written and as an adult I thought the pace moved along quite well. I think it will easily hold the attention of a young reader. It definitely has the slant of appealing to the boys but I think girls would enjoy the story too.

My favorite part is that of Arcade Livingston himself. He's a bit on the nerdy side (he loves the library for heavens sake!) but somehow he makes being a nerd cool. One of the biggest take aways for the story is to learn to be comfortable with who you are. I think that's such an important lesson especially at this age.

I'm looking forward to the future books in this series. I think the second installment comes out in September 2019 so you don't have too long to wait.

The Wonder That Is You by Glenys Nellist | Children's Book Review

The Wonder That Is You by Glenys Nellist

Glenys Nellist
Children's Book

"It felt as if the world stood still
The day my dream came true,
And all creation paused to see
The wonder that is you."

Every parent dreams of celebrating the arrival of their new child. This heartwarming picture book captures the moment that dream comes true.

Filled with tender emotion and joy, The Wonder That Is You is the perfect way to tell your little one how much they are loved.

The Wonder That Is You by Glenys Nellist

My Thoughts

Some children's books are written especially for children. The words and illustrations are designed to capture the attention of the child as the parent reads to them. Other children's books are written with the momma in mind. The Wonder That Is You was written for the mommas. The precious message goes right to the heart of the new mother expressing all those beautiful hopes and dreams that we have as we cuddle our new little one.

If you purchase books for new baby gifts, this one needs to be on your list. It is beautifully illustrated and the verses are tender and touching. It will be a lovely gift to the new momma over and over again as she reads the book to her sweet new baby.

Not Forsaken: Finding Freedom as Sons & Daughters of a Perfect Father by Louie Giglio | Christian Life Review

Not Forsaken by Louie Giglio

Christian Life

You are
chosen
loved
prized
wanted
believed in
by a perfect Father

In Not Forsaken, Pastor Louie Giglio invites ut to understand the character of God in a life-changing way: as a perfect Father who wants you to live under the waterfall of His blessing. You see, God is not the bigger version of your earthly dad. And He's inviting you to walk in freedom as His loved son or daughter.

Forgiveness is not a free pass for the person who has wounded you. Forgiveness is rooted in Christ's love and justice.

My Thoughts

I knew what this book was about when I picked it up. I knew it was going to be about our earthly fathers as well as our heavenly Father. I thought I was ready to read it. But I wasn't. I read the first chapter, cried my eyes out, and promptly tossed it on the coffee table and walked away.

But that book just kept calling my name. So I picked it back up and read some more. I cried a little more and put it back on the coffee table. After this second reading session I knew I needed to finish it. I knew I would find healing in the end but I also knew it would be like ripping a band-aid off. And it was.

My earthly father was a flawed man. He hurt me deeply but God showed me how to forgive and move on. Louie Giglio's writing took me through that journey again and it was tough but it was so worth it.

If you have a father, and we all do, you need to read this book. Even if you have to read it over a period of time like I did you should. Being able to see your relationship through the lens of your heavenly Father puts things in perspective.

I found this book to be a hard read but worth every tear. We all have a longing for a good father and this affirms that He's already there just waiting for you to come to Him.

The Very Best, Hands-On, Kinda Dangerous Family Devotions by Tim Shoemaker | Devotional Book Review

The Very Best, Hands-On, Kinda Dangerous Family Devotions by Tim Shoemaker

Tim Shoemaker
Devotional

The remedy to ho-hum, not-again, "Do we have to?" family devotions

Regular family devotions are important. Unfortunately, they're often . . . boring. But what if devotions looked less like sitting still and listening to someone read and more like, say, electrocuting a pickle? Or converting a leaf blower into a toilet paper launcher? Or lighting toothpaste on fire?

These hands-on, kinda dangerous, totally unforgettable object lessons (along with nearly fifty others) are not only more fun than other family devotions--they actually deliver the spiritual impact you desire for your kids. So put away the flannelgraph, get out the safety goggles, and start bringing the truths of Scripture to vivid life in your household. Just remember to change out of your Sunday clothes first.

My Thoughts

My first thought after reading this book was, "where in the world was this when I had a house full of kids?" This is seriously one of the best family devotional books I have come across.

The stereo-type for family devotions is somewhere along the lines of the family gathering in the living room with dad reading aloud, mom shushing everyone, and the kids squirming or zoning out. Not with this book. One of the devotions has you visiting a funeral home! If that doesn't get your kids attention I don't know what to say.

There is so much that I like about this book. It's very creative but still contains impactful lessons. The prep is minimal so it doesn't become a great burden to do the actual activities. I also like that it could be used in several situations. Of course it is designed for once a week family devotions but what about each night of summer camp? Or choose a few for a small group activity.

The little by-line on the front of the book says "52 Activities Your Kids Will Never Forget". I think that's true but I also think as an adult these activities will leave a lasting impact as well. I recommend this to all the parents. I'm sending a copy to each of my kids to use with the grands, you should too!

Mending Fences (The Deacon's Family #1) by Suzanne Woods Fisher | Amish Fiction Review

Mending Fences (The Deacon's Family #1) by Suzanne Woods Fisher

The Deacon's Family #1
Amish Fiction

Every saint has a past. Every sinner has a future.

Luke Schrock is a new and improved man after a stint in rehab, though everyone in Stoney Ridge only remembers the old Luke. They might have forgiven him, but nobody trusts him. He has been allowed to live at Windmill Farm under two conditions. First, he must make a sincere apology to each person he's hurt. Second, he must ask each victim of mischief to describe the damage he caused.

Simple, Luke thinks. Offering apologies is easy. But discovering the lasting effects his careless actions have caused isn't so simple. It's gut-wrenching.

And his list keeps growing. Izzy Miller, beautiful and frustratingly aloof, also boards at Windmill Farm, and Luke's clumsy efforts to befriend her only insult and annoy her. Eager to impress, Luke sets out to prove himself to her by locating her mother. When he does, her identity sends shock waves through Stoney Ridge.

My Thoughts

I love a fictional trip to the little community of Stoney Ridge. I've been reading about these characters from the beginning and always look forward to seeing what they have been up to since my last trip. When you read long series like this there are always characters that you wonder whatever happened to them. Luke Schrock is one of those people.

We first encountered Luke in The Inn at Eagle Hill series. His story continued with The Bishop's Family series. He was a mess and last we heard he was off to rehab. Well he seems to finally be finished after the third shot at it. But will he be different?

Amos and Fern Lapp have been known to take in troubled kids that need a bit of guidance. With great reluctance they agree to give Luke a place to stay in exchange for help on the farm.

There's a new girl in town and her name's Izzy. She's a mystery to all of us but it was a joy to see her story unfold. Her character has so many layers. Just when you think you know all there is to know about her something else is revealed.

I don't think that I've ever read a book by Suzanne Woods Fisher that I didn't like. But I am going to say that this book has got to be my favorite so far. There are some things that are revealed at the end of the story that tie several previous events from previous novels together. And guess what . . . I didn't even realize that they were loose ends when I was reading those stories! You would think that after all of these books/series set in the same place with mostly the same people would become monotonous. But you would be wrong. I find them just as fascinating as I did with the first book.

This is the beginning of a new series but it is also the continuation of a previous set of series. You can of course read this book without having read the previous books, but you would sorely miss out on some very good fiction. I say treat yourself and start at the beginning!

My Thoughts

All of Jamie's books that I have read have an eerie feel to them and this one is no exception. The story goes back and forth between the present and turn of the century Pleasant Valley, Wisconsin. The subject matter centers around an assylum. It also includes post-mortem photography. This book really has a creepiness factor that is quite compelling. I promise you'll come away from it with a whole new appreciation for the subject matter.

What I appreciate about Jamie's writing is that while I was reading the story I kind of felt a tension that made me a bit uncomfortable. I kept thinking is she going to go down the "woo woo" trail and start in with spirits and ghosts? She doesn't. There are characters that believe in those things but the overall story doesn't promote that. It really is just a fascinating read about subjects that are interesting in a creepy way. I enjoyed it and look forward to her next book.

The Line Between by Tosca Lee | Thriller Book Review

The Line Between by Tosca Lee

Thriller

In this frighteningly believable thriller from New York Times bestselling author Tosca Lee, an extinct disease re-emerges from the melting Alaskan permafrost to cause madness in its victims. For recent apocalyptic cult escapee Wynter Roth, it’s the end she’d always been told was coming.

When Wynter Roth is turned out of New Earth, a self-contained doomsday cult on the American prairie, she emerges into a world poised on the brink of madness as a mysterious outbreak of rapid early onset dementia spreads across the nation.

As Wynter struggles to start over in a world she’s been taught to regard as evil, she finds herself face-to-face with the apocalypse she’s feared all her life—until the night her sister shows up at her doorstep with a set of medical samples. That night, Wynter learns there’s something far more sinister at play and that these samples are key to understanding the disease.

Now, as the power grid fails and the nation descends into chaos, Wynter must find a way to get the samples to a lab in Colorado. Uncertain who to trust, she takes up with former military man Chase Miller, who has his own reasons for wanting to get close to the samples in her possession, and to Wynter herself.

Filled with action, conspiracy, romance, and questions of whom—and what—to believe, The Line Between is a high-octane story of survival and love in a world on the brink of madness.

My Thoughts

The publicity on this novel calls it frighteningly believable and I am in agreement with that description. You hear about these crazy cults on the news and this story takes you inside the workings of one such sect. The story is about Wynter Roth and her survival in an apocalyptic cult. The story flashes back and forth between present day and the past. That perspective gives the story added suspense as details are revealed and things slide into place.

It's been a while since I have read a novel that stressed me out this much. The cult leader is Magnus who is evil cloaked in kindness. When the story begins you don't realize how much danger Wynter is in. But the deeper you get into the story the stronger the sense of doom becomes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I like Tosca Lee's gritty writing style. But if you are sensitive to the more earthy side of things you may not like this book. There is mild profanity used so be forewarned. I think I enjoy Tosca's books because her characters reflect the real life people that I encounter every day.

I have no idea if this book with have a sequel but I sure hope it does. The story itself is complete but there is still that lingering question of what happens next. Just in case anyone cares what I think . . . my vote is for a book two.

My Thoughts

Nancy Mehl has definitely upped her supsense game with the release of Mind Games. I've read several of Nancy's previous novels and really enjoyed them. Something about this book just goes to the next level. I'm not sure if it's the subject matter or just the evolving skills of the writer but it captured my attention and held it like none of the others have.

With this new series we also get a new heroine. Her name is Kaely Quinn and she's an FBI Behavioral Analyst. She's also the daughter of a notorious serial killer. Obviously Kaely has chosen this career to right some wrongs but as you'll find out her motives go deeper than that. She is a character that is not only believable but likeable as well. Nancy's writing allows us to see her from both her professional side and her personal side.

I think I'm like most suspense readers in that I love to try to figure out the killer before the story reveals it. About mid-way through I knew I had it. But then there were some very believable red herrings thrown in that I fell for. I began to doubt my assumptions and waffled back and forth. The fun part is that my original guess turned out right . . . but I wouldn't have voted for that if I had to. To me that is the sign of a wonderfully written tale.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the next installment that will be released later this year. If this first book is any indication, it's going to be a thrilling series. There's a little bit of romance thrown in that I look forward to seeing develop further. If romantic suspense is your interest then I recommend you pick this book up.

The Christmas Heirloom by Karen Witemeyer, Kristi Ann Hunter, Sarah Loudin Thomas, and Becky Wade | Christmas Book Review

The Christmas Heirloom by Karen Witemeyer, Kristi Ann Hunter, Sarah Loudin Thomas, and Becky Wade

Karen Witemeyer, Kristi Ann Hunter,
Sarah Loudin Thomas, and Becky Wade
Historical Romance

In Kristi Ann Hunter's "Legacy of Love," Sarah Gooding never suspected returning a brooch to an elderly woman would lead to a job . . . and introduce her to the woman's grandson, a man far above her station.

In Karen Witemeyer's "Gift of the Heart," widow Ruth Albright uses the family brooch as collateral for a loan from the local banker. But the more she comes to know the man behind the stern businessman, the more she hopes for a second chance at love.

In Sarah Loudin Thomas's "A Shot at Love," Fleeta Brady's rough-and-tumble childhood means she prefers hunting to more feminine activities. She never expected her family's brooch might be how a fellow hunter turns her attention from competition to romance.

In Becky Wade's "Because of You," Maddie Winslow has spent years in love with a man whose heart was already spoken for. When a church Christmas project brings them together and she stumbles upon an old family brooch, might it finally be her turn for love?

My Thoughts

This was the choice of my book club for our annual Christmas book. What a perfect pick! There are four short stories from four very talented writers. I felt like each story could be read in an evening. During this busy time of year that is a real bonus. While each story is a stand alone novella there is a theme that pulls all of them together. The connecting thread that weaves throughout each story is a brooch that is passed from mother to daughter.

I enjoyed each of the stories and can't say that I preferred one over the other. The continuity between the stories was very smooth and made for an overall good read.. The last two stories, A Shot At Love by Sarah Loudin Thomas and Because of You by Becky Wade, are off shoots from their current series. If you're fans of these two authors you definitely don't want to miss this book.

So far this is my favorite Christmas read of the season. If you're looking for a stocking stuffer for your favorite reader this would be a wonderful choice.

A Tale of Two Hearts (Once Upon A Dickens Christmas #2) by Michelle Griep | Christmas Book Review

A Tale of Two Hearts (Once Upon A Dickens Christmas #2) by Michelle Griep

Once Upon A Dickens Christmas #2
Michelle Griep
Historical Romance

London, 1853: Innkeeper’s daughter Mina Scott will do anything to escape the drudgery of her life, for there’s nothing more mundane than serving customers day after day. Every minute she can, she reads and dreams of someday becoming a real lady—and catch the eye of William Barlow, a frequent guest at the inn.

William is a gentleman’s son, a charming but penniless rogue. However, his bachelor uncle will soon name an heir—either him or his scheming cousin. In an effort to secure the inheritance, William gives his uncle the impression he’s married, which works until he’s invited to bring his wife for a visit.

William asks Mina to be his pretend bride, only until his uncle names an heir on Christmas Day. Mina is flattered and frustrated by the offer, for she wants a true relationship with William. Yet, she agrees. . .then wishes she hadn’t. So does William. Deceiving the old man breaks both their hearts. When the truth is finally discovered, more than just money is lost.

Can two hearts survive such deception?

My Thoughts

I have been looking forward to reading this book for a year now. It was worth the wait! Last year I read the first book in the series and knew that if it was any indication of what was to come I wouldn't be disappointed. I wasn't. This book shifts the story to an unlikely couple. William Barlow seems to be the perpetual bachelor and Mina Scott is a server at her father's tavern. Mina has had a crush on William since she first set eyes on William but he's not really paid that much attention. But when a family situation arrises Mina becomes the perfect person to help William.

This charming story takes a few twists and turns but on the whole stays pretty much as you would expect. It really is the perfect read for a cozy night in front of the fire. The characters are lively (just wait until you meet Uncle Barlow) and the romance is warm and fuzzy. If you've been binge watching Christmas movies then this will be a nice change of pace. The little shout outs to the wonderful works of Dickens are the perfect accompaniment to this delightful story.

I am eagerly anticipating the third book in this series which is slated to come out next year. I hope that this will become a nice little Christmas tradition from Michelle Griep for years to come.

Everything She Didn't Say by Jane Kirkpatrick | Historical Fiction Review

Everything She Didn't Say by Jane Kirkpatrick

Historical Fiction

There is more than one way to tell a story . . .

In 1911, Carrie Strahorn wrote a memoir sharing some of the most exciting events of twenty-five years of shaping the American West with her husband, railroad promoter and writer Robert Strahorn. Nearly ten years later, she's finally ready to reveal the secrets she hadn't told anyone--even herself.

Certain that her writings will be found only after her death, Carrie confronts the pain and disappointment of the pioneering life with startling honesty. She explores the danger a woman faces of losing herself within a relationship with a strong-willed man. She reaches for the courage to accept her own worth. Most of all she wonders, Can she ever feel truly at home in this rootless life?

New York Times bestselling author Jane Kirkpatrick draws out the emotions of living--the laughter and pain, the love and loss--to give us a window not only into the past but into our own conflicted hearts. Based on a true story.

Read an excerpt.
READ AN EXCERPT

My Thoughts

Jane Kirkpatrick has once again found a little known female pioneer and brought her story to us. We've come to expect interesting stories about women that in their own unique ways helped to shape our nation. In Everything She Didn't Say, Ms. Kirkpatrick uses Carrie Strahorn's actual account as the building blocks of the novel then fills in the nuances from her own imagination and historical facts. The result is a fasinating story of one ordinary woman doing extraordinary things.

Carrie Strahorn isn't someone that you would be familiar with unless you happen to be from one of the towns that she helped establish. She grew up in a Chicago suburb as the daughter of a prominent physician. She lived a privileged life that led to her meeting Robert Strahorn. She fell in love and they soon married.

Like most women of that time Carrie imagined settling down and raising a family. She quickly learned that settling down with Robert was not in the cards. Robert was an aspiring railroad promoter and writer. That meant travel, lots of travel. Again the story is fascinating yet heartbreaking at the same time.

Carrie's story is a wonderful example of what dying to self means. Time after time she had to make the decision to put aside her wishes and dreams because of a covenant she made. As a wife and mother I can relate. It's a daily struggle to put aside personal ambitions in order to fulfill someone else's dreams.

The following quote is my favorite from the novel. I think it captures the essence of the story.

"What I hadn't realized then--and that Caldwell helped teach me--is that it's how we respond to the broken tracks that matters, because there will always be brokenness. It's what we do with the punches we take, the heart-stopping moments, those are the knives that carve out who we are. I came to believe that people born with silver spoons in their mouths never get the real nourishment they need to grow to their full height unless the spoon tarnishes or the food drops off now and then and they have to find a way to pick it up themselves. They're really deprived, which may be why we call them "spoiled," like meat left out in the son."

I highly recommend this book to all women. Carrie leads a different life than most of us, but her experiences are riddled with lessons for each of us.

My Thoughts

This cute little book will either delight you or drive you crazy as a parent or perhaps even a little of both. In our family it has been used as a secret weapon. We have a couple of reluctant readers that usually reject all efforts to get them to read. But something about a good joke book draws them in.

Mr. Silverthorne has put together a good mix of jokes, knock-knock jokes, riddles, and silly stories. They are guaranteed to make you laugh, groan, roll your eyes, and shake your head. But it also makes me so happy to have my little one following me around reading out of it to me.

Whether you have a reluctant reader or an avid bibliophile this book is a good choice for your children. The jokes are clean and clever so you don't have to worry about what they are going to come across and repeat.
